Introduction:

I needed a way to make small notes that could somehow linger to the MANY files I've downloaded.

Some easy way to make annotations to files, to add little tags that would help me not to say:

"What the hell does this thing do?"

or "Did I download it?...WHY??"

or "Oh DAMN! I remember I found out the best tool for the job among this heap of files months ago, but now which one WAS that?"

Yes, there are available some such programs on the net but many are made redundant by Windows XP as they were based on web-folder feature. And they recognized files by their name or location. "What if I move or rename them?"

So... I made MyNotes

MyNotes assists you in two ways:

  • If you've a file in front of you in windows explorer, and you quickly want to know what it is, then you just have to see its note (that you earlier created).

  • If you remember that sometime back you created a note for the file you require now, then you can use the search notes feature, and open the file from the search results.

Main Features:

  • This tool allows you to assign personal notes to any file. The notes show up as balloon help (see above screenshot).

  • Even if you rename the file or move it to a different folder or drive or change its contents MyNotes will still recognize it!!
     It works like this:
Location / Name Changed -> Notes stay
                           Contents Changed -> Notes stay
Location / Name AND Contents Changed -> Taken as a new file

  • Search Feature: just press Ctrl+Alt+Y to search the notes. The search spans both descriptions (notes) and file names.

  • (Only for a .Zip file) the search for an attached note goes like this (in order of preference, if not successful next in order is used) :
       - Based on contents
       - Based on file path
       - Contents of  'File_id.diz' file inside the .zip file
       - Contents of  'Readme.txt' file inside the .zip file

If the first two are not found and any of the last two is found then the MyNotes database is automatically updated by the note (first 300 characters only, to prevent flooding) of that file. Thus, making it available for search the next time you want to find that file.

(while reading notes from the last two sources the extended ASCII characters that are not normally displayed are stripped to improve visibility)

  • Shows your notes using Non-Obtrusive Tray Notifications.

  • You can attach notes to files on Read-Only media like CD-ROMs.

  • As the notes are centrally located and stored in a simple text file, they are easy to backup.

Help:

Important: MyNotes requires Full path being shown in the Address Bar of Explorer windows. If the Address Bar of the explorer window doesn't show the full path then enable it from:
Tools Menu> Folder Options> View> Display the full path in the address bar

Installation: Just extract the contents of the Zip file to any folder and run MyNotes.exe.

Adding a Note: Right-click a file and select MyNotes to add a note to that file.

View Notes: When MyNotes is running just take your mouse to upper left corner of the screen Or press the Hotkey Win + Q, and the note will pop up.
(Explorer window must be active)

Delete a Note: To clear a note just enter a blank note for the file.

Search Notes: Press Ctrl+Alt+Y   or use   Tray Menu

Backup Notes: All the notes are saved in MyNotes.ini that you can backup.

Command Line Parameters:

/Clear   command line parameter clears the database of notes referring to non-existent files. Original database is backed up. Use this with caution as it'll remove all notes pointing to files it can't find, including notes to removable media that's not currently inserted.

/Uninstall   command line parameter removes MyNotes registry entries and all files except MyNotes.ini that contains your notes.

Changes:

v2.6

  • Advanced File Search : If the file to which a note is attached is not found at its original location, MyNotes can search for the file based on its contents at user defined location. This search can find the file even if its renamed.

  • Installation now asks for Destination Folder.

  • Installation now optionally creates Start Menu icons.

v2.5

  • MyNotes is Completely Rewritten.

  • Tray menu lets you select Search and Exit.
  • Fixed : Broken zip auto-search note feature.

v2.4

  • Installation now creates icons in Start Menu.
  • Uninstallation now removes all traces of MyNotes from system (Registry entries + Icons + Installed files)
[MyNotes.ini is NOT removed by Uninstallation]

v2.3

  • The note input window is greatly improved. Also, the need to use '##' as the new line character is removed. Also made it support word-wrapping.

v2.2

  • Added an alternative way to show note. Hotkey:    Win + Q

  • Now the Search hotkey and Exit hotkey are clubbed into one:   Ctrl + Alt + Y

  • Now for .zip files the number of characters extracted from 'Readme.txt' and 'File_id.diz' files is increased to 300.

  • Some trivial fixes.

v2.1

  • Now for a .Zip file, the search for an attached note goes like this (in order of preference, if not successful next in order is used) :
       - Based on contents
       - Based on file path
       - Contents of  'file_id.diz' file inside the .zip file
       - Contents of  'Readme.txt' file inside the .zip file

If the first two are not found and any of the last two is found then the MyNotes database is automatically updated by the note  of that file (first 200 characters only, to prevent flooding). This way next time you can search the description of that file too, without having actually written a note for that file!

(while reading notes from the last two sources the extended ASCII characters that are not normally displayed are stripped to improve visibility)

  • The Search function is much improved, now search terms are not required to be entered exactly as they occur in notes.

  • To exit MyNotes press Ctrl+Alt+Win+Y

  • Fixed: Now only single instance of MyNotes can be run.

  • Fixed: Empty search string used to display all notes, now it cancels search.

Note: If the .zip file has a folder structure, and 'file_id.diz' or 'Readme.txt' are not in root, then they will not be read.

v2.0

  • MyNotes remembers your notes even if you change the contents of the file. It works like this:
Location / Name Changed -> Notes stay
                           Contents Changed -> Notes stay
Location / Name AND Contents Changed -> Taken as a new file
  • Running with ' /Clear' command line parameter clears the database of notes referring to non-existent files. Original database is backed up.
  • Running with ' /Uninstall' command line parameter removes MyNotes registry
    entries.
  • Option to delete note of a non-existent file added in search results.
  • While adding a note to a file which already has a note, the earlier note appears as editable text in the note input window.
  • Added a Ver 1.x to Ver 2.0 Converter for Old MyNotes.ini
  • Many more touches here 'n' there which now I don't remember  : )

Since first release:

  • Error handling improved.
  • Hotcorner size increased to 20*20 pixels.
  • Added the ability to open the file from search results.
  • Fixed a bug which caused MyNotes to exit after a search is performed.
  • Fixed a bug which caused MyNotes to exit after adding a note to a file.
  • Mouse position scanning made faster.
  • MD5.exe included in MyNotes.exe
  • This information moved from script to readme file.
