Chapter 1

The Symbol
"Love your calling with passion, it is the meaning of your life."
-- Auguste Rodin
The symbol above is called the DX Pyramid. It will mean nothing to you until you learn its secrets.
How did I learn its secrets?
I learned them progressively over the years in many hard-earned ways. I devised the symbol itself in 2001 when I was working on the alternative to Creationism and the Big Bang contained in this book. When I designed the DX Pyramid, I realized it was a modification of the famous Masonic pyramid:

I myself was not a Mason when I devised the DX Symbol. I was, however, later drawn to Masonry through a series of powerful dreams, which dreams I will later discuss. The dreams suggested that I should become a Mason and this made no sense to me at the time. As is so often the case with dreams and intuitions, becoming a Mason later made perfect sense While this book is not about Masonry, my alternative, which I call the Third Option does resonate with certain ancient truths embraced by Masonry and other groups. I stress, however, that the Third Option is my unique idea. That it resonates with other truths demonstrates the axiom that, "one thing leads to another." Just as my writing unexpectedly lead me to Masonry, so too our main work in this book will lead to many other topics including physics, antiquity, modern culture, politics, and perhaps especially the subject of religion.
I consider that any discussion of the origins of our Universe and humanity cannot ignore religion, God, or science. Religion and science generally disagree, sometimes violently, about the origins of the Universe. Religion believes that God created the Universe and that is all one need to say. Some religious scientists have tried to use physics to bolster their theories of how God created the Universe, but at the end of the day these scientists are also unapologetic Creationists who have used their Ph. D.'s to lend credence to what is irreducibly a belief, however convincing the physics may seem. Those scientists who are atheists believe that the Universe in its totality can be accounted for based on various models of quantum cosmology, the preferred model being the Big Bang. What I seek to do is to bypass the conventional models of Divine Creation and the Big Bang in offering an alternative way to think about how the Universe began. I consider that the Third Option is inherently liberating because it frees people from the either/or debate between science and religion. Further, by re-conceptualizing the origin of the Universe, we gain a new basis to think about the meaning and purpose of our lives.
I have been asked how the Third Option first revealed itself to me. The core secret came to me as a revelation. This part was very easy because it was revealed to me. The remaining work of writing the book has taken a very long time because I have had to grow and mature into the revelation. I had to study a great deal in order to acquire the requisite base of knowledge into which I could embody and articulate the revelation of the Third Option.
How the Third Option was Revealed to Me
One day I found myself a passenger in a sleek sports car that was sprinting like a steel blue panther up an old winding mountain road. The once smooth black of the road had faded over many years of freezing nights, snow runoff, and hot summers into a coarse brown speckled strip leading up into the tall timber and blazing blue sky above Southern California. My friend knew this old road and how to maneuver his swift, radial-pawed beast up the lush mountainside. As we neared the crest of the mountain, he downshifted and accelerated. Blue steel blurred against the backdrop of granite and pine as the car growled and tore around a hairpin turn towards the next gravel-strewn switchback that had no guardrail. I could feel the vibrations of the powerful rear engine rise and fall through the black leather bucket seat into which I strapped. The sharp, square dashboard was low and the large windshield flowed seamlessly down onto the sloped hood. Except for the forward window posts, I had unlimited visibility for 180 degrees. Cool jazz was playing on the stereo. The weak winter sun shone through the pale bronze tinting on the windows. Neither of us spoke, for it was one of those intensely sensual road trips that invited you to get lost in the experience it offered.
So we did.
Each of us accepted the experience’s invitation to lose ourselves in its moment. And why not? This particular experience would only happen once in the world’s lifetime and it wanted us to enjoy it for the short time it would be alive. We were thus both lost in our own worlds, my friend in driving the car and I in drinking in the sky, the fallen snow, and the towering evergreens anchored deep into the San Gabriel mountains of Southern California. The soundtrack to these lush sensations was being played through a stereo system so sweet that it felt like you were living inside of pure music. I looked through the side passenger window down to the valley far below and saw thick white clouds swirling up from its floor. The jagged clouds climbed up into the freezing sky and grabbed at it like the wispy fingers of a ghost reaching for a life it had once known.
"Don’t you remember when we dreamed all of this?" the experience asked me.
I had never had the impression of another speaking inside of my head, but this was clearly the voice of another. The voice had authority, dignity, and was, I felt, approaching me with both respect and a demand. The voice was that of one whom I have learned to call The Eminence.
"Don’t you remember when we dreamed all of this?" the Eminence asked me once again.
I suddenly went a state of Satori, which state I had before experienced, In Satori, everything is seen exactly as it is. There are no mediating structures of belief or interpretation to modify that which you see or perceive. Nothing is superimposed upon reality via the mind and its patterned beliefs and conditioned modes of perception. Satori is, in a word, one of the best states available in human life. Its rarity makes it all the more desirable and elusive. You cannot summon such a state, rather, as it did during the drive, it summoned me to its majestic heights. It did so for a definite purpose and the words you are reading reflect that purpose.
I then suddenly flashed back to some distant time and place in which I was huddled with a countless group of as we peered into a Dreaming Pool up from which swirled clouds like those I had just seen in the valley. Within the depths of the pool we saw visions of the earth. "Don’ t you remember? We said that we would have sky, waters, lands, trees, and friends," the Eminence said to me. The vision of the Dreaming Pool moment was remarkable and continued for some time. The essence of the moment was that an Eminence had called me to communicate something about the way in which our Universe was brought into existence. While I didn’t know the details of what I was supposed to communicate, the Eminence confirmed to me that my writing would be the key aspect of the communication.
The next day found me at my desk thinking about what had happened to me. It did not make sense, for I knew about the origins of the Universe beyond the possibilities that it had either been created by God, or, it had come into existence on its own and that God did not exist. Since the time of Darwin, the brilliant man who saw the hands of man in the fins of sea turtles, the options for explaining from whence we came have been either Divine creation or godless evolution. Of course, there has always been the option of saying that God used evolution, but that is an odd compromise; why would God need to experiment with evolution? Why would God, especially with that One's vaunted foreknowledge, evolve a species knowing beforehand that it would become extinct because it could not survive within its environment?
Even Einstein had said that God did not play dice with the Universe, and so the, "selection of the fittest" made no sense if God had created everything. Surely an Almighty creator wouldn’t tinker with an endless succession of useless species to find the few that worked. Only an ignorant force such as evolution would need to face a learning curve when it came to designing and building creatures suited to live in the various swamps deserts, and archipelagoes of earth. Surely, I reasoned, God would have taken all of the variables and interrelationships into account during the original 168 hours in which he created our planet according to the Bible, if we are to believe the Bible at all.
There were no compromises in my mind. Either you believed in Creation or you didn’t. If you believed, then God didn’t need evolution. However, if there was no God then you had to have evolution. Frankly, ever since The Origin of the Species had first kicked dust on the boots of The Holy Bible, the Universe has simply not been big enough for both Jehovah and Darwin. One of them has to get out of Dodge before sunset. Of course, the sun is far from setting on this issue, and so the respective deputies of Jehovah and Darwin continue to shoot Dodge full of holes in a running gun battle over which of these two gentlemen is to be sent packing. Christian fundamentalists consider that evolutionists are rustlers trying to steal sheep from God's flock by using their high falutin' ideas. Evolutionists consider the fundamentalists to be no better than uneducated hillbillies who believe the wild stories in the Bible such as Joshua and his men shouting down the walls of Jericho or Moses parting the Red Sea.
As I thought about this, The Eminence suddenly revealed to me the basis of the Third Option. Without effort I typed the phrase The Disunification of Energy and Awareness. I remember staring at the words on my computer screen and knowing that the Eminence was communicating to me directly. The words were immense and intrinsically valuable for they spoke profoundly to the question of the origins of the Universe and humanity. I also was given to know exactly what the phrase meant. What I next saw was the revelation unfold in my mind's eye. It was incredible and only took a split second, for the Eminence had given me instantaneous knowledge. In the same moment I realized the import of the words, I also understood that I had been given something highly complex and original, yet it came without a lot of the details. I didn’t have one of those breakthrough experiences in which I wrote for a week on end without sleeping or eating. Instead, I have had to grow and age into the original vision. It has been a progressive revelation of which I am an integral part because I am the servant of the Eminence. I became a student of the Eminence in that moment and have remained so ever since.
From the first, I have believed in the Disunification (hereinafter "DX"), but I didn’t know if the Eminence believed in me. As the years went on though, The Eminence has shown his faith by opening to me the knowledge of the DX. This book you are reading now is the visible proof that I have believed in the Disunification and have served it through my writing as the Eminence called me to do.
The import of my experience is that I have come to reject both divine creation and evolution as the only possible means whereby our Universe appeared. Instead, I offer you a Third Option which understands creation and evolution as events that occurred only after the remarkable and previously unknown event that caused the appearance of our Universe. This remarkable and heretofore secret event is called the Disunification of Energy and Awareness. The DX carries within the power to open a new dimension in human understanding. It is radical, challenging, and utterly unique. You will not think the same way about the Universe, religion, politics, or your life after you understand the DX.
Why I was called to communicate this knowledge is beyond me, for the invisibles choose whom they will. I serve them and they in turn care for me in ways that are profound. Their care does not mean that I am immune from suffering or the daily demands of existence and responsibility. Their care of is expressed in another way, and that way is the power of Vision. Vision can sustain you when the harsh winds of suffering, fear, and despair tear across your naked soul. Humans need to believe in something, they need a sense of destiny and purpose, and a call that has a vision will fulfill and sustain you. It will test you with doubt and fire to be sure, but it will care for and purify you when you serve and affirm it with concrete action, a determined will, and a set of goals relative to the Vision. Your life and beliefs are the structure of Vision. They are the means whereby Vision can manifest itself, and yet you must co-operate with the Process by obedience, planning , and service. You have to do virtually all of the work, for Vision is not magic. Vision supplies the power to motivate and inspire you, yet, as Thomas Edison famously observed, invention is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. In my experience, revelation is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Having said this, that magical 1% was so utterly remarkable and life-changing that I gladly gave back 99% as a gift to the giver of the revelation, for the fact is that the 99% could not have happened without that once-in-a-lifetime 1%.
The powerful knowledge of the DX I was given provided me with the motivation I needed to keep going to produce this book in the midst of an ordinary life. I got married and my wife and I had two children sixteen months apart. I also worked on many other writing and art projects and spiritual disciplines in addition to my normal employment. Thomas Moore taught me that soul work takes it own time. I concluded that getting the book right was more important than getting it printed as soon as possible. It is a labor of love to shape a book word-by-word and the tuition I continue to pay The Eminence is dedication and time, these being the very essence of life. So with the inspiration and guidance of The Eminence, I will now proceed to tell you the secrets of the DX.
