Janus Zeal:
The son of Queen Zeal and the brother of Schala. Though young, he feels apathetic toward things and somewhat bitter. This could be caused by the drastic changes that have occurred to his mother in recent years. He regrets not being able to save Schala, whom he loves dearly. It is rumoured his magical ability rivals even that of Schala. During the Ocean Palace disaster he is enveloped in a Gate that propels him to the Middle Ages. There he is found by Ozzie. By 590 AD Janus had adopted the persona of Magus by altering his own appearance and leading the Mystics. Janus has a purple pet cat, Alfador.
Magus:
Janus Zeal. After disappearing into a Gate in the Ocean Palace Janus arrived in Truce Canyon sometime in the latter half of the sixth century. There he was immediately found by Ozzie. Years later he rallied the Mystic race and engaged war with Guardia, all the while waiting for the time when he could summon Lavos to his castle and destroy the beast. Magus harbors deep feelings of love for his sister Schala and probably feels partly responsible for her fate as he was repeatedly unable to stop Lavos. It is unknown how Janus was able to warp his appearance so drastically, but it can be assumed that if he has the power to change Glenn into a frog, he might also have the power to alter his own looks.
Schala Zeal:
Princess of the Kingdom of Zeal. She was used by her mother to continually use her dreamstone pendant to activate the Mammon Machine, which in turn drew forth Lavos' energy. Schala believes in the equality of life and people. Regardless of where they live, how they look and whether they can use magic. Janus only opens up to her and Alfador. Janus and Schala are very close.
Queen Zeal:
The absolute ruler of the Kingdom of Zeal in the year 12,000 BC. After discovering Lavos and finding a way to absorb his energy she slowly became consumed with greed and desired immortality. While under the influence of Lavos she did not hesitate to use her own daughter to achieve her selfish desires. Queen Zeal temporarily gained immortality as she was able to live inside of the Black Omen for thousands of years. It wasn't until the arrival of Crono and the resulting destruction of the Mammon Machine and Black Omen that the queen was released from Lavos' grasp. It is unknown whether she survived the destruction of the Black Omen.
Alfador:
Janus Zeal's cat, easily distinguished by his white and purple markings. Little is known of him, yet he managed to survive the fall of Zeal and continued to live on the planet's surface during the Ice Age with the surviving humans.
Kingdom of Zeal:
A monarchy which ruled in 12,000 BC. In the years prior the king had died which granted Queen Zeal total authority. She turned the country into a floating wonder using the incredible energy of Lavos. The dream was shattered when her greed got too strong. The continual drawing of Lavos' powers briefly summoned him to the surface, allowing him to attack the planet. Most of the projectiles were absorbed by Zeal's floating continents, destroying them and causing the kingdom to sink beneath the waves within a single night.
