The word "culture" in cultural materialism includes all culture such as pop culture, not just high culture mainly found in canonical texts. The word "materialism" is the belief that culture cannot totally transcend the political and economic system; it is highly influenced by it, but not a complete reflection of it, unlike Marxism.
