CLASS OF '62 NEW TOPICS

On Familiar Ground
June 17, 2006

Making merry with the Ursulines at their 150th Anniversary celebration on the Feast of Corpus Christi are Peggy Kuntz Lessing, Sister Mary Madeline Welch, OSU, Marguerite Fredrick, Marty Miller, Eileen Gallagher Harrington, Sister Mary Alice Duggan, OSU, Elizabeth O'Donnell, Paula Sayers, Eileen McNiff Hussey and Carole Schmidt Jennings

After a moving ceremony in Holy Family Chapel, our group joined other celebrants at a beautiful reception on Maura Lawn. Among many well-loved Ursulines, we glimpsed/were able to visit with Sister Dorothy Ann Kelly, Sister Miriam Cleary, Sister de Chantal. . . . Beaming smiles ruled the day. Beth O'Donnell and Eileen Hussey, amazingly trim and youthful, stay on the go with golf and school principal activities respectively. Peggy and Carole thrive on grandparenting. Carole's column in the Summer, 2006, Quarterly is chock full of class news. Madeline has been conducting diplomatic negotiations to secure St. Augustine's (the best house) for our 45th reunion and is getting the word out for everyone to show up to help plan our 50th!

+ In Sympathy +

Karen Ann Keegan has just written with the sad news of the death, on October 24, 2006, of Marie Barletta's adopted daughter Tracy after a serious illness. May the Lord grant Tracy's soul a happy repose. Karen asks that we all keep Marie in our prayers.

+ In Memoriam +

We were shocked and saddened to learn the belated news of Kathleen Barry's death from Carole Jennings, who provided the following information from Kathy's obituary in the Washington Post. Kathy died from pneumonia on November 20, 2004, after suffering for some time from Alzheimer's disease. After graduating from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI, in 1963, Kathy moved with her family to Arlington, VA. There she began studying theater at Catholic University as well as raising four children. Her marriage to Vincent Fuller, Jr, ended in divorce. Kathy served as program director of the National Theatre's free Saturday Morning and Monday Night programs for 15 years and ran a summer program at Wolf Trap for 5 years. She maintained her effervescent personality. It seems just a moment ago that Kathy and Bunny were embracing as we all delightedly acclaimed Kathy our Freshman Class President. We pray for the happy repose of her soul.

Attorney Documents Unworldly Aliens

In "Three Young Women," the cover story in the Winter, 2006, Bylines from the Ursulines of the Eastern Province, Madeline Welch, OSU, puts on her historian hat to recount the foundation of the New York Ursulines by three very young Ursulines from the Austrio-German Empire.

+ In Memoriam +

Rae Condon writes to share the sad news of Rita Govoni Keane's death. Rita fought a quietly gallant battle against cancer. Please read the beautiful tributes from her husband Daniel J. Keane and youngest son Terence that Carole Fabrizzi Angelino obtained for us. May the Lord grant Rita's soul a happy repose.

Lorenza and Family Safe in Louisiana!

What a thrilling experience to hear Lorenza Winn, MD, our only class member residing in the New Orleans area, tell in a recent phone conversation the story of her family's survival of Hurricane Katrina. Lorenza's mother wisely evacuated her longtime Pass Christian, Mississippi, home, which was later totalled by the storm. Her sister's house, on pilings 10 feet high in Pass Christian, ended up with water in the attic, 18 feet above ground. Her homeowner's insurance had contained a rider that excluded the home's contents in case of flood. Kathleen left with 2 cats, a dog, a bird, and 2 harps. Although Lorenza's brother's home in New Orleans was at one point totally underwater, he hopes to go back.

As for Lorenza herself, she had decided in mid-August to purchase a home in a gated community in Baton Rouge and was scheduled to close the day after Katrina hit. As she puts it, "the house was really too large for me," but through the providence of God it all came together. The sellers invited her to move into the house before closing and she was able to provide living space for every member of her family.

Lorenza continues to practice medicine. Despite her family's harrowing ordeal, her voice is vibrant and joyous.

Perfect Timing!
May, 2005

Above is the cover of Susan Neunzig Cahill's latest book, a collection of essays, fiction, and poetry by more than 30 great American, British, French, German, and Italian writers, all of whom voice their love and understanding of "the mother city of the western world." Each essay is followed by lively commentary and practical travel details such as the best rooftop restaurants, walking tours, and outdoor concerts, to help both armchair and on-the-road travelers enjoy the ancient marvels these writers celebrate. (By the way, you can read about the life and papacy of Pope John XXIII courtesy of Susie's close collaborator.) Congratulations to our classmate. We are proud of one of CNR's most distinguished authors.

A Message to the Class of '62

"I would like to wish all of the Class of '62 a most Blessed Christmas and a New Year filled with much happiness and good health. I hope that you are all enjoying the holiday with family and friends. As the year draws to a close let us say a prayer for all classmates and their family members who have died this year."

-- Peggy Mylod Farabaugh December, 2004

+ In Memoriam +

In her most recent column in the Quarterly, Carole Schmidt Jennings writes of the untimely death of Joan Sullivan Cassidy. Catherine Tyburski Nagy wrote Carole that Joan had died in March of this year after a battle of many years against thyroid cancer. Her husband, Bill, has the consolation of caring for two nearby grandchildren, including a newborn. You may extend your condolences to him at 9 Brook Road, Amherst, NH 03031. Rest in peace, Joan. Our prayers are with you.

  • Check out our new Family Snapshots page and click here to send us a snapshot of your children, grandchildren, or perhaps yourself with a friend.

  • What a joy to hear from Maribeth Doran Shiebler (9/13/04), one of '62's Florida residents. She states that "we did just fine even though we were in the eye of Frances. Lots of damage to the waterfront homes, though. I will not be in New York on the 18th or 19th - unless another hurricane comes and I have to get out of "Dodge City."

  • Thanks to Carole Schmidt Jennings for expanding our list of hopefuls for the September 19 Mass with the names of Peggy Kuntz Lessing, Betsy Lombardi, and Carole Schmidt Jennings.

  • CNR Centennial Dinner Dance, Liturgy of Thanksgiving, and Reception:
Class President Ann Karen Keegan writes about plans to attend the CNR Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral on September 19, 2004. She also mentions Ronnie Gilligan, Mary Sullivan, Eileen Finnerty, and Rita Moriarty Gorman. "I'm planning to attend as of now barring any emergencies," she adds. As is your webservant, Paula Sayers. Please eMail our web site now if you'll be among those present, as we'd like to add your name to the list. We're also hoping to post pictures of Class of '62 members at all three closing events.

  • Renewed call for photos (9/04)
Include text for captions, please. We hope to add new photo pages as often as we have photos to build them. Our scanner can now reproduce snapshots, so plan to send us either paper or digital pictures.

  • Madeline Welch, OSU, attorney at the Community Legal Aid Society of Delaware, organized "The Immigrant Victim of Violence Conference" in April, 2004. Almost 200 participants at the University of Delaware heard speakers, including three abused Hispanic women, discuss protection of immigrants in the implementation of the Violence Against Women Act. Last year, Madeline was gratefully recognized at the celebration at the Annual Meeting of the Leviticus 25:23 Alternative Fund, celebrating 20 years of low-interest loans to the poor and powerless, for her legal work in connection with incorporation, etc. (BYLINES, Ursulines of the Eastern Province) Way to go, Madeline!
