David Chevan and Warren Byrd

As America sees more and more assimilation, there is a joining of cultures in not only literature but in music as well.  African-American pianist Warren Byrd and Jewish-American bassist David Chevan joined together to create music that expresses “not only the sacred sounds of Jewish and African-American music, but the secular as well.”  The Afro-Semitic Experience began performing in late.  They now have three albums.  In their music you can hear the traditional Jewish melodies spiced up with the Jazz influence.

Rebecca Walker

As the daughter of famed author Alice Walker and her Jewish husband Mel Levanthal, Rebecca Walker faced a world where she did not fit in anywhere.  After the brutal divorce of her parents, she grew up in a world that shifted every two years.  Her autobiography, Black White and Jewish shows the different treatment she received in each location that she lived, and with each culture that she lived with.  Rebecca experienced an ever-changing world; when her parents were married, her Jewish grandmother sat shiva and declared her son dead, yet as Rebecca grew that same grandmother was there to support her every step of the way.

Independence Day - Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum

Independence Day

In the 1995 film, conjoint Black military prowess (Will Smith) and Jewish scientific expertise (Jeff Goldblum) create the lucky situation that defeats an alien invasion.  However, look at the stereotypical roles.  The African-American has the strength to go into battle, while the White Jew backs the brains to the operation.  While showing a conjoint effort, the film does little to provide growth to an understanding between cultures.
