Michael Carrick

Position : Midfielder
Born : Wallsend, North Shields
DOB : 28/07/1981
Height : 6 0

Classy young midfielder who is being tipped for even bigger things this campaign after making a breakthrough to the full England side at the end of last season.

The Geordie youngster first came to prominence as part of the record-breaking FA Youth Cup winning side in May 1999, when he played a starring role in the two-legged final win over Coventry.

Michael was promoted to the first team squad when he reported back and made his first team League debut as a substitute against Bradford City in August 1999. Four months later, the lifelong Newcastle fan made a fairytale full debut against his boyhood heroes in West Ham's first match of the new Millennium at St. James' Park.

Michael, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Swindon Town during that 1999-2000 campaign, then made his debut for England's Under-21 side. However, it was last season that he really made his rise to prominence, as he secured himself a regular first team place in midfield and impressed the Upton Park faithful with a series of consistent performances that belied his teenage years.

His form also caught the eye of new England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who included him in his first ever squad for the friendly against Spain in February and then handed him his first full cap as a substitute in the 4-0 win over Mexico in May - just weeks after the 20-year-old had been shortlisted for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Kevin Horlock
Position : Midfielder
Born : Bexley
DOB : 01/11/1972
Height : 6 0

Scottish international midfielder who joined West Ham in a club record transfer for the second time when he arrived from Sunderland for £5million in August 2001.

The 30-year-old was originally signed from Liverpool in August 1994 by former boss Harry Redknapp for a then club-record £1.5million and played a vital part in keeping the Hammers in the Premiership that season.

However, after falling out of favour with Redknapp and, by his own admittance, not taking his career seriously enough, Don was transferred to First Division Sheffield United for £1million in January 1996.

When Blades manager Howard Kendall took over at his spiritual home Everton two years later, he took Hutchison with him and it was at Goodison Park that the likeable Geordie really began to make a name for himself.

He broke into the full Scotland team under Craig Brown and scored a memorable goal against England at Wembley in the Euro 2000 play-offs before a pay dispute with the Goodison hierarchy led to him seeking a move. Sunderland were first in the queue and Peter Reid paid £2.5million to take him to the Stadium of Light last summer.

He won the Player of the Year award with the Black Cats last year but when the opportunity came to move back down south, Don jumped at the chance and once again became the Hammers’ club record signing at £5million – a position he held for just a few weeks prior to the arrival of Czech defender Tomas Repka.
