What's happened to baseball?
Cool posters... I mean I'd buy em.
| The game of baseball is changing... but is it for the best?
In 1961, Roger Maris hit 61 home runs for the New York Yankees. This feat took him 162 games to accomplish. Before this, George Herman "Babe" Ruth had hit 60 home runs in 154 games. until the early 90's, the records were considered separate since they were accomplished in different amounts of games. Unfortunately, when it was declared that Maris' record was the true home run mark, Roger Maris had already passed away. Maris is certainly considered a great ballplayer, and Ruth may have been the best. So why does it seem so routine today when 2 or more players consistently hit 50, 60, 70 home runs a year? We've lost sight of what's important in baseball. Maybe the fans haven't... hell, fans are going to love the game no matter what. After the 1994 strike countless fans swore they'd never go to a game again. Lo and behold, ticket sales indicate fans are going as much as ever. If the fans haven't lost their way, the players certainly have. Not all of them, but here we're going to discuss the truants, the bad seeds, those who leave a blemish on the face of the game, the asterisks next to records. And for what purpose? How can cheating possibly tell us something good about a person? Are we to love Barry Bonds for his incredible accomplishments? The sad thing here is that Barry Bonds was an incredible, and incredibly overlooked, player in the 1990's. Look around the site for some information on the 500 homerun club hitters, check out Barry Bond's stats, or find out a little more about what I've been up to here or my interests here. Here are a bunch of my friends doing what they do best... being obnoxious. This page was last updated on 04/21/04. |
