Nita Hutton
Singer in Play
Nita Hutton was one of the lead singers in a community play entitled,
"Order My Steps." Previews began on June 12th and there was a four week run
beginning June 20th at the WLCAC (Watts Labor Community Action Center's)
theater in Los Angeles. Twenty-plus actors and community participants sang,
danced, and testified during the telling of the intensely personal story of
Selena. In the play, Selena is a Black female dramatist who discovers that in
the theater of her own life she is writer, performer, audience and critic--all
of whom do drama when AIDS walks on stage. The unique plot is written as a
play within a play. Selena was doing research for a play on AIDS for her
church. As part of her research she takes an AIDS test and finds out that she
is HIV positive. This is a test of her faith and trust in God. The play
sends a strong, thoughtful and informative message.
Nita's singing and acting abilities were seen in the play. She was
highlighted at the beginning and end of the play. During the middle of the
play she sang and had an acting part in the church scene onstage. Her
God-given talent was outstanding. Her performance brought a heartwarming,
soulful and electrifying touch to the play.
