Tecmo Super Bowl for nintendo came out in 1991. It was the first NFL video game to feature many of the qualities we now find in the most modern games such as madden 2003. Tecmo was the first game to include the full 16 game season format complete with playoffs. Also, it was the first video game to have the actual player names and teams. Tecmo was also the first video game to record player stats during the season. These features led the way for future football video games.
