"[The evolution of the music theatre genre had to do with] the fact that everything is tumbling all the time, and it needs some kind of wild and poetic expression. And I think that the musical is poetic; even when you are dealing with something...like Hello Dolly!, there's something magical about it that just does not exist in films and television. It's not about being smart; it's about being alive." --Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim is one of the greatest lyrists/composers of all times. He is so great that music teachers and such esteemed music conservatories, such as Cincinnati Music Conservatory, discourage younger students from studying pieces by Sondheim. This is simply because his masterpieces are so brillant, complicated, and difficult. On the CCM website, the directors suggest that students auditioning for the school do not use Sondheim because his music is far too complicated to master for such an audition. This just proves the heighth that Sondheim's creativity has climbed to. This Extreme Sondheim website that you are about to view explores Sondheim as a musical theater lyrist.
