My name is Nisar Acharya(Pintoo). I was born on February 5,1984 in Bombay,India, the only child of Tushar and Neela Acharya. I was born disabled(cerebal palsy). In India I tried to enter a special school for the disabled but I did not get in because there was no space. I was put on the waiting list for a year but I still was unable to gain admission. My father then read about doctors in the Bronx,U.S.A. and in Philadelphia. These doctors were treating children there with similar birth defects. He decided to contact them for help. In the meanwhile, my mother was teaching me at home. She was covering the basics. Then the Dr. in Philadelphia replied asking my father to send video tapes of me. He then requested my father to come to the U.S.A. for special training. My father applied for a visa to travel to the U.S.A.,but was denied a visa. Then my father contacted the Dr. in the Bronx. He said that my parents would have to bring me over to the U.S.A. for an operation which would cost about $25,000(U.S.). At that time we had little money and we were living in a shack. Therefore, we started to ask for donations from the public and from family members. My uncle and some friends donated some money, but we needed much more. When the Dr. saw our predicament, he agreed to lower the cost of the operation to $17,000(U.S.). However, we also needed the airfare to come over to the U.S. Thankfully, we managed to raise the desired amount of money to meet our needs. Next, we applied to the American Embassy in Bombay for visas and we were granted medical visas to come to the U.S. We came on May 1,1992. We were staying with my uncle at that time. I had the operation on May 13. The operation went well. However, as time went by the device that was implanted in my spine was beginning to lose its effectiveness, but I still hoped for the best and decided to make America my home. I eventually had a cold. My mother boiled some water and added some Vick's Vapor Rub. I was going to use this medication to treat the cold. Unfortunately, I tripped the bowl of scalding water unto my left hand causing it to have second degree burns. I was hospitalized for ten days. During this time the hospital's Social Worker visited me and asked me whether I would like to go to school. I gladly accepted her offer. At first, I had a tutor coming to my home. Later, I was enrolled at a school in East Orange, N.J. I was then nine years old. After six years there, I felt I needed a higher level of education and I started to check on other schools. Eventually, I decided on A.Harry Moore School in Jersey City, N.J. All this time my father went about looking for work. He was then employed by the company of Howard Johnson Hotel in New York. As for my mom, she was home taking care of me and doing the usual duties of a homemaker. After about a year my Case Manager at A.Harry Moore School asked me if I would like to attend the Hudson County Schools of Technology for the afternoon sessions. I agreed to this willingly. However, I first had to have an aide to assist me in moving about as I was and still is wheel-chaired bound. I was fortunate to get an aide through my social worker and case manager. I then started attending the H.C.S.T. in September ,2000 and I am still a student as of this date. After two years later. In September of 2002 I transfer to another High School. Now I attend H.C.S.T. County Prep High School in the morning and High Teach High School in the afternoon. My parents and I had applied for Medicaid and were granted it. After a while the Medicaid had stop for all three of us. Eventually and thankfully the Medicaid has continued only for me and that too only until I’ll turn 21. Two years back one of mine cousin brother from my mother side came from India. He came for better work and then six months after, his wife and son came here. Now he and his family live in San Diego CA. One time we went to visit them it’s was real nice, and sometimes they come over here. The year is 2004 and my last year of High School. My aide who helped me all this long has suddenly came up with some health issues. So now my parents has hire somebody who can come with me to school. Unfortunately they had to pay the person with their own money, because the school couldn’t anything about this problem. About my after High School life I don’t myself because we cannot afford higher education right now. My cousin brother and his wife also has asked us that if we wanted to move in with them, but we haven’t made our mind up yet.
