The history of the island of Paxos in Greece

In mythology Paxos was created when the god Poseidon hit the island of Corfu with his trident to break off the southern tip of it. He made Paxos the love nest for mis mistress Amphytrite. Nowadays Poseidon's trident is still the symbol of Paxos.

Paxos is such a small island it doesn't really have a history of its' own. Everything on the island is closely connected to what happened on nearby Corfu. Like all the Greek island it has been invaded by foreign powers many times. Paxos was interesting because it has such good harbours. In 230 BC Paxos came under Roman rule and it was occupied by the Goths, the Normans, the Byzantines, the Venetians, the Ottoman Turks, the French, the Russians and the English.
