Holidays in Karpathos in Diafina, Olympos and Pigadia - by Nelleke

Unfortunately the weather was not as good as we had hoped for at the end of October, but in spite of that we have had a wonderful holiday. We had booked an appartment in Pigadia, the capitol...it was more like a cozy village with a fantastic harbour where we spend many hours, also when the waether was not so good. It was about a twent minutes walk, but it was worth it. Nice shops and restaurants and not very touristic. especially the inland is authentic, with not many roads and Diafana can only be reached by boat.

Since the end of the nineties there is a road from Diafana to Olympos, and before that time everything was done by donkey. In Olympos there are about 300 inhabitants, and they all still mary eachother. Several people have moved to the U.S. but they still return to look for a partner that they can mary.

While we were there they were having elections on Karpathos, and everybody had to go to the place where they were born in order to vote, also the Greek people that were living in the U.S.! Several times a week the ferry from Rhodes and Creta makes a stop, and it takes 4 to 5 hours to get there.

Karpathos is a quiet island, so don't expect to many disco's. You'll be disappointed if you do. If you like to party it is better to go to Rhodes. I defenitely want to return some day, and also as a woman alone it is no problem at all!
