The beaches of Chios in Greece

Chios is also called the island with a hundred beaches, so I started counting them but I didn't count a hundred.... but then again counting was never my strong points. I did count over fifty beaches though. This is a quite a number of beaches for an island of the size of Chios, so I think that there probably a beach to satisfy everyone's needs. Below I have made a selection from the beaches of Chios and I am planning to go there to see a good number of them myself. I will especially try to find good naturist beaches on Chios. On the island there are apparently many small private coves with small beaches making it a paradise for naturists, and there are larger beaches where there is a place for naturism as well. Since the airport of Chios is not very large and there are only a very limited number of flights each week, the island is not infested with tourists and there is a good chance that you can find a beach to yourself.

Chios beaches: Karfas beach

Karfas is located 7 kilometer south of the capital city of Chios, and it is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches of Chios. Karfas is a sandy beach. The village is a tourist center with plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops, bars and entertainment.                                                                                             

Chios beaches: Afanis Nautis beach

The beach of Afanis Nautis is situated 6 kilometer north of the capital of Chios. It is a beach with pebbles and popular with windsurfers. The north Wind often blows over the beach, so if it is really windy it is not recommended to visit the beach of Afanis Nautis unless you like the high waves.           

Chios beaches: Agiasmata beach

Agiasmata is a coastal village with a beach and hot springs healing that claim to cure certain diseases. The water is rich in iron and sulfate and used for certain healing therapies. On the beach there is a small hotel where people can stay. The beach is near the village Keramos, approximately 56 kilometer northwest of the capital of Chios.

Chios beaches: the beach of Aghia Dynami

Aghia Dynami is a beautiful and unspoilt beach in the south of the island of Chios. The beach is named after the chapel of Aghia Dynami that can be found in the bay of the beach. This beach is nice and rather quiet and situated in the Bay of Salagonas. The road that leads to Aghia Dynami is the same as the road that leads to Phana Kato.                                                                                                                                                                                          

Chios beaches: Aghia Fotia beach

The beach of Aghia Fotia is located 11 kilometer south of the capital of Chios, near the village Neohori. It is a beach with small pebbles and the water in the bay is very clear. In the village and on the beach of Aghia Fotia are some hotel rooms and apartments for rent, and there are tavernas. The atmosphere here is very relaxed.

The beach of Aghia Marcella on the west coast of the island of Chios is a pebble beach which is located in a beautiful bay. There are tavernas near the beach that serve fresh fish and close to the beach is the beautiful church of Aghia Marcella. This beach is comparatively calm.                                                                                             

Chios beaches: the beach of Aghios Aimilianos

The beach of Aghios Aimilianos is situated about 14 kilometer away from Chios town and the beach belongs to the relatively large mastic village Kallimassia. Kallimassia is built on a green plain with many olive trees. The beach of Aghios Aimilianos a quiet beach that is mostly sandy with small pebbles.

This is a beautiful beach consisting of small pebbles, set amidst a clear sea. Situated near the mastic village of Kalimassia (13 kilometer south of Chios town). the northern part of the beach is known as the Aghia Fotia beach and the south is the beach is called Aghios Giannis after the small chapel at the same beach.

Aghia Irini is a fairly quiet and not too large beach that lies along the road from Limenas Meston to Elata, at a distance of about 6 kilometer southwest of Mesta in Chios. The beach is located in a protected bay and consists of small white pebbles and blue-green water. The beach is named after the chapel of Aghia Irini, which is located near the beach.

Anemi is the beach that belongs to the village Kardamyla and is situated in the north of the island of Chios. Near Kardamyla there are still a number of other beautiful beaches such as Nagos and Vlihada. Many people in its surroundings visit the beach for sunbathing and for a swim in the sea.

This beautiful beach is situated 4 and a half kilometer from the village of Mesta in the southwest of Chios and is popular with the locals. It is a fairly quiet beach with clear waters, and it is surrounded by mountains which protect the beach from the wind. The last 100 meter to the beach there is no road and you have to walk.

The beach of Avlonia is five kilometers away from the village of Mesta in the southwest of the island of Chios. It is a very beautiful beach with coarse sand and tiny pebbles, but the beach Avlonia is often in the wind coming from the north. If it is not windy day than this beach is worth a visit.

The Bella Vista Beach is actually the beach of the capital of Chios and is one kilometers south downtown of Chios Town. It is not the best beach of the island of Chios, but for the residents of Chios town it is like a refuge, and a beach that they can reach on foot. At the Bella Vista beach there are obviously a number of hotels and restaurants.                                                                                             

Chios beaches: the beach of Daskalopetra

The beach of Daskalopetra is not far from the capital. It is situated about 7 kilometer north of it at Vrondados. It is not a bad beach and it has small pebbles and clear water. At the beach and nearby are many restaurants, cafes and hotels.                                                                                                                            

Chios beaches: the beach of Dydima

The beach of Dydima (=the twins) lies on the route from Limenas Meston to Elata, about five kilometers away from Mesta, in the south of the island of Chios. It is actually two beaches that are very similar. These beaches consist mainly of small white pebbles, and the water is blue green in color.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

Chios beaches: the beach of Elinda

The beach of Elinda is beautiful and situated in a sheltered bay in the west of the island of Chios, about the same height as the capital (center of the island), in the deserted village of Anavatos. It is a beautiful beach with coarse sand and sea water is very clear. It is an ideal place for swimming and sunbathing. In the waters not far from the coast lies the wreck of a Roman boat. The name Elinda comes from the ancient Greek word Alios meaning "navy".

Chios beaches: the beach of Esouza

The beach Esouza is located in the northwest of the island of Chios in the village Trypes. It is one of the quieter beaches of the island because it is so remote. The photograph here is unfortunately not the beach of Esouza but the village of Trypes. I hope to one day see the beach myself and then make some good pictures to illustrate.

De baai en het strand van Giosonas liggen op 31 kilometer afstand van Chios stad in het noordoosten van het eiland, op 6 kilometer afstand van Kardamyla. Het is een lang strand van keitjes en het wordt omgeven door naaldbomenbossen. Omdat het een eindje van Chios stad afligt is het er ook iets rustiger en ongerepter.

Het strand van Gridia beach ligt twee kilometer ten zuiden van het dorp Nenita, en even boven het strand van Komi, in het zuidoostelijke gedeelte van het eiland Chios. Het strand van Gridia is te bereiken vanaf de splitsing in Nenita. Het is een strand met kleine kiezelstenen. In de omgeving van het strand zijn hotels en tavernaas te vinden.

In het Noorden van het eiland Chios zijn veel inhammen met stranden en strandjes. Het strand van Gyaliskari ligt in een van dit soort inhammen ten noordwesten van het dorp Kardamyla, tussen de stranden van Vlihada en Nagos. Het is een aardig en knus strandje dat beschermd is gelegen en omgeven is door groen.

Het dorp Kambia ligt op 48 kilometer afstand van Chios Stad in het noordoosten van het eiland. Het dorp ligt beneden aan de voet van een berg en kijkt uit over een ravijn. Dit gebied is erg groen. Vlakbij het dorp liggen de stranden van Kambia. Het ene strand heeft grote kiezels en het andere kleine. Het zijn rustige en onbedorven stranden, maar bij harde wind uit het noorden is het beter om ze te vermijden.

Het strand van Karida (6 Kilometer ten zuiden van het mastiekdorp Pyrgi, op de weg naar Olympoi) is een klein onbedorven strand met kiezelstenen en met helder zeewater. Vanwege het laatste stuk van de weg naar het strand, dat niet geasfalteerd of geplaveid is, is het het beste er heen te gaan met een Jeep of een terreinwagen.

Ook het strand van Kato Fana ligt op zes kliometer afstand ten zuiden van Pyrgi op de route naar Olympoi, maar in plaats van een kiezelstrand is dit een zandstrand. het gebied van Kato Fana heeft ook archeologhische betekenis. De tempel van Fanaios Apollo staat er en ook de restanten van een oude Christelijke kerk.                                                                                                                                                                                          

Chios stranden: Komi strand

Het strand van Komi ligt op 4 kilometer afstand van het dorp Kalamoti, in het zuidoosten van het eiland Chios, en het is een fijn zandstrand met een paar losse keitjes. Op een gedeelte van het strand zijn parasols en ligbedden te huur, en op de rest van het strand kun je je handdoekje neerleggen. Ook hier is een aantal restaurants en er zijn wat hotels waar je een kamer kunt huren.

Het strand van Kontari ligt op 3 drie kilometer afstand van Chios stad, aan de zuidkant, bij de luchthaven en kijkt uit op de hoofdstad van het eiland. He is een strand van grof zand en kleine keitjes. Op het strand staat soms veel wind (vanuit het noorden) en kan in dat geval beter vermeden worden, tenzij je van hoge golven houdt.

Het strand van Lampsa is een aardig strand in de omgeving van Limnos. Het ligt op enige afstand van de hoofdstad af. Limnos is een dorpje in het noordwesten van het eiland Chios. Bij het strand van Limnos vind je de tavernaas. Het strand van Lampa lijkt ook erg op het nabijgelegen strand van Limnos, maar het is wel iets kleiner.                                                                                                                                                                                          

Chios stranden: het strand van Lefkathia

Lefkathia is het bekendste en tevens het drukste strand in het noordwesten van Chios. Het ligt in de buurt van het dorp Volissos, tussen Limnos en Limnia. Het is een georganiseerd zandstrand met zonnebedjes en parasols, en dus veel mensen. Het water is er diep en helder. Aan het strand zijn de tavernas en er is ook een bar. In de direkte omgeving van het strand zijn volop hotels en appartementen.                                                              

Chios stranden: het strand van Lilikas

Het strand van Lilikas ligt op ongeveer 1 kilometer afstand van het bekendere strand van Komi, in het zuidoosten van het eiland Chios, op de route naar het dorp Vouno. Het dorp zelf is klein en bestaat slechts uit een paar huizen die in een baai liggen en het strand bij het dorp is een vrij klein strand met kiezelstenen.

Chios stranden: het strand van Limnos

Het strand van Limnos ligt aan de noordwest kan van het eiland, op 42 kilometer afstand van Chios Stad, en niet ver van Volissos af. Het is er niet erg druk. In de omgeving zijn wat taverna's voor een hapje of een drankje. Ook zijn er aan het strand appartementen te huur en er zijn wat hotels. Geen massatoerisme in ieder geval. Het is een zandstrand met wat keitjes.

Chios stranden: het strand van Limenas Meston

Het strand van Limenas Meston ligt op vier kilometer afstand van het dorp Mesta, in het zuidwesten van Chios. In het rechter gedeelte van het dorp vind je de bootjes en een plek waar veerboten aan kunnen leggen en het linker gedeelte van het strand is geschikt om op te liggen en de zee in te gaan. Het is een vrij smal strand met grof zand. In het dorp en in de omgeving zijn hotels en restaurants.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

Chios stranden: Megas Limnionas

Het strand van Megas Limnionas ligt 9 kilometer ten zuiden van de hoofdstad Chios stad, en is ook een van de bekendere stranden van Chios. Het strand is een mengeling van zand en kleine keitjes. Ook aan het strand van Megas Limnionas zijn genoeg hotels, restaurants, winkels, bars en uitgaansgelegenheden.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      

Chios stranden: het strand van Lo

Het strand van Lo ligt op zeven kilometer afstand ten noorden van Chios stad, bij het dorp Vrondadas. Het is een georganiseerd strand in een goed beschermde baai, met grof zand en een heldere zee. Je moet voor dit strand een ticket kopen om er op te mogen en de faciliteiten te kunnen gebruiken. En hoewel het kleine strand er erg knus en gezellig uitziet zou ik om die reden persoonlijk zeggen: doorrijden naar het volgende strand. In de omgeving is van alles te vinden qua hotels, appartementen, studios, restaurants, vistaverna's en cafeetjes....                                                                                             

Chios stranden: Managras

Het strand van Managras ligt in het noordwesten van het eiland Chios, in de buurt van Volissos. Het is een prachtig strand met grof zand, helder water, ideaal om te zwemmen en te zonnebaden. Het is ook het langste van de stranden op Chios, zo ongeveer anderhalve kilometer. Omdat dit strand wat meer afgelegen is is het ook wat rustiger.                                                                                                                                                                                          

Chios stranden: het strand van Mavra Volia - Emporios

Het strand van Mavra Volia, in het uiterste zuidoostelijke puntje van Chios, op 5 kilometer afstand van Pyrgi, is een strand met kleine zwarte keitjes. Dit bijzondere strand dankt zijn uiterlijk aan een vulkaan die er in de prehistorie stonf. Er zijn drie stranden die naast elkaar liggen, met diep donkerblauw water. Er zijn appartementen en hotels, en er zijn wat restaurants te vinden in het nabijgelegen Emporio.

Het strand van Metohi ligt aan de westzijde van Chios, op 2 kilometer afstand van het dorpje Siderounda. Het is een mooi en rustig strand met zand en kleine keitjes. Het water is er erg helder. Bij het strand is een taverna waar je iets kunt eten.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  

Chios stranden: het strand van Nagos

Het strand van Nagos ligt op een afstand van 5 kilometer van het dorp Kardamyla, in het noorden van Chios. Er zijn riviertjes, platanen en andere bomen, en er is een mooi strand met kleine gekleurde keitjes. Het landschap in de omgeving is er erg mooi. Aan het strand zijn restaurants en hotels. De naam Nagos komt van het woord naos (= tempel) en in de buurt is dan ook een oude tempel blootgelegd.                                                                                                                            

Chios stranden: het strand van Tagma

Het strand van Tagma ligt ligt niet ver van Chios stad, namelijk op 4 kilometer ten noorden van de hoofdstad van het eiland. Op het strand met zijn kleine keitjes staat nogal eens een flinke noordenwind en daarom is het er niet altijd even prettig vertoeven. Voor windsurfers of voor mensen die van hoge golven houden is het er wel geschikt, en misschien ook voor mensen die van lekker rustig houden.                                                                                                                            

Chios stranden: het strand van Vokaria

Het strand van Vokaria ligt is gesitueerd in het zuiden van het eiland op ongeveer 20 kilmeter afstand van de hoofstad van Chios. Je kunt het strand bereiken vanaf een splitsing in het dorp Nenita. Langs de boulevard staan wat huisjes en restaurants en daar ligt ook het strand van Vokaria dat voornamelijk uit kleine keitjes bestaat.
