THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF GUINEA PIGS AND EVEN MIXED BREEDS. THIS SECTION WILL BRIEFLY DISCUSS SOME OF THE BREEDS.

SMOOTH HAIRED GUINEA PIGS

The hair is short, smooth, and evenly flat against the body. The colour must be uniform over the entire body. Recognised colours are:

Agouti: This colour resembles the wild ancestral guinea pig colour. The grizzled colour effect results from the alternating bands of light and dark colours on each single hair, the tip of each hair always being the darkest. Agoutis are bred in gold, silver, cinnamon, and chocolate.

Solid Colour: These are usually considered sturdy and healthy. They come in black, chocolate, red, white, orange, lilac, beige, gold and grey.

Multi Coloured: Several colours are distributed in various patterns across the body. The colours are known as brindle, hymalayan, dutch, tortoiseshell, as well as tortoiseshell and white.

ENGLISH AND AMERICAN CRESTED

The animals in these breeds are smooth haired, carrying a single hair whorl or rosette on the forehead. The crest hair of the English breeds are the same colours as the body hair. Recognised colours are agouti and all solid colours. The American crested is marked by a white rosette and only the colours black, red, gold and buff are recognised.

ABYSSINIAN

Abyssinian guinea pigs are known for their unique pattern of hair whorls called rosettes of which 8-10 are distributed around the body. Recognised colour are red, black, white, tri colour, brindle, tortoiseshell and multi colour.

REX AND TEXEL

Rex guinea pig hair is short, rough and wavy or curly. Recognised colours are red, white and buff.

The texel are a result of a cross between rex and peruvian breeds. The hair is short and frizzy around the head but is long and curled in corkscrews all over the body. Recognised colours are red and red and white.

SATIN

The guinea pigs have particularly silky and shiny hair that is very fine and dense. The satin sheen enhances the intensity of their colours which are red, gold, buff, cream and white. Satins characteristics are now seen in other breeds.

PERUVIAN

The long, dense, shiny hair of peruvians grows in whorls all over the body. Recognised colours are black, red, white, tri colour, tortoiseshell, red-multi, and red-black.

HAIRLESS (SKINNY PIG OR BALDWIN)

Baldwins are born with hair that  falls out about the time they are weaned, then they are totally bald. Skinny Pigs are born without hair except on the head, feet, and ankles.
