Easy Does It....Keep It Simple
Mood:  vegas lucky
Now Playing: Feelin' Groovy by Simon and Garfunkel
Topic: Reflective
Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feeling groovy
Ba da da da da da da, feeling groovy

Hello lamppost, what'cha knowing
I've come to watch your flowers growin'
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?
Doo-it in doo doo, feeling groovy
Ba da da da da da da, feeling groovy

I got no deeds to do
No promises to keep
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me
Life I love you,

What a beautiful day today! I'm washing my windows today so I can see outside better. It's gorgeous! I planted a mulberry tree outside the window next to my desk, so there are birds by me all the time. There is a robin right now. (I also have a love bird in this room with me, and she loves to hear other birds! I have a canary in my bedroom, as well, and they chirp back and forth all the time!)

But life is good. I went outside this morning and picked some berries, and now I'm sitting here typing to you, listening to birds singing all around me...outside, in the same room, and upstairs. There's a nice breeze, and all I can think is what a beautiful day that it is!

Do I have stresses? Wowie zowie, I do! Do I have problems? You bet. Some of them are pretty big. But I find that if I take time to enjoy the simplest things that life gives, I find so much to be grateful for, and it helps me to know that it's not the end of the world, no matter how big my problems might seem.

Keep it Simple. There's a good saying. This weekend was the Founder's Day weekend celebration that they have every year for AA. (Alcholics Anonymous was founded in Akron, Ohio.) Well, AA has pretty good slogans...Good addages that anyone could do better to live by. Keep it Simple, is one.

Another is Easy Does It. You know, when we ram our way through life, pushing and pushing so much just trying to make it all work, we actually screw it all up. We need to relax and Let go and Let God. Another one of the sayings they use!

Life is good. Groovy, in fact! And if we learn to just take it One Day at a Time, we find out it's not so bad.

Fake It Until You Make It! There's another good one! If you don't know what to do, just do what you do know, put one foot in front of the other and pray. Pray believing you've already received, and give thanks; it is yours! (Of course faith without works is dead, so you might have to act on those prayers...Easy Does It, But Do It, you know!)

Keep It Simple. Take time to be still and hear the truth whispering within your soul. You are whole and free, created perfect in the eyes of God. Your needs are supplied, if you will just train your eye to recognize the presence of Good in your life. Then just sit back and enjoy, and make good use of what has been given to you!

If we learn to live life with an Attitude of Gratitude, we'll find there's so much in our lives to be grateful for.

So today, what am I doing? I've got sooooo much to do that sometimes I get overwhelmed. Well, I'm just going to do what's in front of me. I'm going to wash the windows and enjoy this beautiful day! Tomorrow I can take care of something else, but today the windows get clean!

I think that's a good way to live. That way I don't get depressed. When I'm depressed, I can't accomplish a thing, and then there's something to get depressed about!

Awwww...I just looked back out my window, and there are two birds in the tree...a male and a female. I don't know what kind they are, but they are so sweet, and he's feeding mulberries to her! I think they must be in love! See how nice life can be? Just look for the simple things to find beauty, and you'll find it's all around!

And you know what? If you make a practice to encorporate these simple words into your life, I think you'll find in not long, that your health will improve in ways you didn't even know that it could! Anything is easier to take with a smile, but the science is there now to prove that happiness heals!

Have a Peaceful, Beautiful Day! (I'm going to make mulberry pie!!!)

Herbs Are Not Drugs!
Mood:  celebratory
Now Playing: I Want a New Drug by Huey Lewis and the News
Topic: Herbs

Herbs are not drugs, they are nutrients. People often confuse the two, because many drugs are derived from plants. The difference, however, is that they?ve been changed. When parts of a plant are extracted for drugs, it is not a whole plant anymore; but something that?s been made by man. Drugs are synthetic. Plants are made by God. When you extract substances from plants, mix them with chemicals, and heavily process them, it is then that they become drugs. When they are used as whole foods, herbs nourish the body so that the body can heal and stay well. Herbs provide nutritional support so that the body can heal itself.

The following table compares the characteristics of drugs to those of nutrients, as written by David Rowland, NMD, PhD, RNC:

Those who attempt to use nutrients as drugs will likely be disappointed ? and, of course, there is no way that a drug can truly substitute for the lack of an essential nutrient. Their very natures and the roles that they play are entirely different.

Drugs have their place. Drugs are excellent tools when immediate or drastic action is needed, as prescribed by a physician, of course. As mentioned above, drugs have a much quicker effect. Healing takes time.

If drugs are used, it is good to follow with the herbs. Herbs can help to reduce the damage from side effects, and to provide nutritional support to the body so that it can more quickly and easily heal.

You Aren't What You Eat; You're What You Absorb!
Now Playing: I Feel the Earth Move Under My Feet by Carol King

Think about it. You have a beautiful plate full of wonderful food, sitting in the heat on a day when it's 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. How long until it is something you would not want to put into your body? That's something to think about!

The entire process of nutrient assimilation and elimination of wastes should occur within 12-14 hours after each meal. There is an easy test to see how long this process is taking within your own body. It's called the Corn Test! (The Beet test works really well, too!) Just eat some corn, and then see how long it takes to show up in the stool. (It's as good as any high-cost sophisticated test you can find!)

Digestion starts in the mouth. No, let me retract that phrase. It does start in the mouth, but the quality of the food has something to do with it, too. The more natural foods are, the easier they are to digest. On that note, let me say, that digestion begins the moment the food item is picked. (In my mind, all food comes from the earth, but the same holds true the moment the animal dies--thereafter it begins to break down.)

Take fruit, for instance. When a fruit is at the perfect stage of nutritional readiness, do you know what happens to it? It falls from the plant. That is the best time to eat!

The next thing that happens is that it starts to break down. From that point on it goes gradually bad, until it's rotten and spoiled, and then it returns to the earth, if it is left on the ground.

This process is due to enzymes. Enzymes help digest our food. Enzymes are part of the chemical make up of a plant, so this process can easily occur.

The enzymes in food, in turn, help foods to break down inside us, and nourish our bodies just as they nourish the soil. It's a pretty good system that works very well...WHEN it is allowed to work.

But man is silly, and due to "necessities" of modern "convenience," food has become so overly processed that the enzymes are usually destroyed. We ship foods from place to place, and so we do things to food to make it last the trip. Sometimes we pick the food before it is ripe, and then let it ripen inside the truck, but it isn't the same. The nutrients don't enter the food from the plant until just before they are ripe, so if we pick them too soon, the nutrients just plain aren't there.

Sometimes, too, we chemically ripen the food. That's even a worse thing to do. Then not only do we have food without the proper nutrition, but it's been poisoned (to some extent, yes!), and then somehow we still call it food. (This is on top of the poison that is sprayed on most conventionally grown foods, to help build the immune system of bugs!)

Please excuse me if I sound a bit upset, but I don't like it when people poison my food! I'm very careful to watch what I eat, due to that!

Often that's not even the end of the story. If not being marketed as whole foods, which is the best, then it is used in some kind of way which surely destroys whatever is left of its goodness. Canned foods are processed with heat, and so ALL the enzymes are destroyed. Food in boxes? Well, we'll be sure to write another whole blog about that! All I can say now, is it depends on a whole lot of things.

The point is that the further away food gets from the original design, the more difficult it is to digest. I would highly suggest using digestive enzymes to help supplement what's been taken out of our food. We produce enzymes within our own body, but these are not all meant for digestion, and we deplete our body of what it needs to operate optimally if we're borrowing enzymes for liver function, for instance, or heart function, to use for digestion. We have a finite amount.

Now
let me say that digestion begins in the mouth...

No. It begins in the nose. I forgot about how my mouth waters when I smell something sooo good! Think about the smell of freshly baked pie, or the way it smells on Thanksgiving. Saliva starts to increase! This is your body preparing for food! Saliva helps break down the food.

NOW it begins in the mouth!!!

It is very important to chew our food properly, because enzymes are released in this way via saliva, as well, and if we rush through this phase we miss out. Enzymes are secreted while we are chewing which are vital to the digestion of carbohydrate foods. Of course chewing is important to the digestion of all foods, to begin the process of breaking it down into the wee tiny pieces it needs to become before anything enters our blood. (Nutrients have to get into our blood!)

So the food travels on down into the digestive system, and the stomach then does it's work. The stomach is more than just something to fill...It has important jobs! Protein begins digestion here, with hydrochloric acid and enzymes working together. The stomach churns the food then, and begins to liquify it.

The food then leaves the stomach, with aspirin and alchol being the two substances already absorbed. It enters the small intestine, which is actually much longer than the large intestine, it is just less big around. The small intestine measures around 22 feet in length, while the large is only about 5 feet long.

This liquid, called chyme, then moves through the small intestine, and fat is digested here with the help of bile acids and enzymes, along with further digestion of proteins and carbohydrates.

Absorption begins in the small intestines for all except as mentioned above, and continues in the large intestine, where vitamins and other nutrients are pulled from the stool. It is very important that we keep this in mind as we consider what's in the food that we eat. Whatever chemicals as such are in our food is subject to absorption into the blood. Pay attention to what's in your food!

After the journey through the small intestine is made, this liquid enters the large intestine through the ileo cecal valve, and it is there where it becomes solid waste. The rest of the nutrients are pulled from the liquid along with most of the liquid.

If we don't drink enough liquid, more water is pulled from the stool, thereby making it dry and hard, contributing to a problem with constipation.

By the same token, if the walls of the large intestine are so covered with undigested fecal matter that the liquid cannot be sufficiently absorbed, this sometimes accounts for diarrhea and runny stool. In this way, diarrhea is sometimes actually a symptom of constipation, especially if chronic. (Acute diarrhea is usually the body's way of getting something out really quick!)

This leads me to a very important point. What are we leaving behind? In a sense, the above scenerio where the interior walls of the colon are so covered with feces that water cannot be absorbed and diarrhea occurs, maybe another part of that equation is the fact that the body is trying to rid itself of poisons! That's what undigestion food in our system becomes, and I'm sure nature is trying to rid itself of this toxic filth. Irritable bowel syndrome is common, as are a myriad of other problems, as well.

It is quite possible to be carrying around 20, 25, 30 or more pounds of undigested fecal matter inside our body! Think of what that could do to our health!

It is estimated that 90% of all illness comes from the bowel. If not eliminated efficiently, waste matter putrifies within us, and this substance is absorbed into the bloodstream affecting areas throughout all of the body. Consider the chart below:

The longer the transit time, the more poisons that are generated, and the more they are absorbed and carried to different parts of the body, as shown.

When the process of digestion -> absorption -> elimination is hampered, the colon gets built up with sludge. We can get blockages in our large intestine, which can cause all sorts of problems for us.

Problems such as constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, polyps, diverticulitus, Crohn's Disease, hemmorhoids, and colon cancer, to name of few.

But other problems which are not always associated with the colon can sometimes also be traced back to problems resulting from improper elimination of waste matter, such as headaches, backaches, skin problems, allergies, arthritis, depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia, high blood pressure, problems with weight, irritability, low resistance to illness, sinus problems...Many things you normally wouldn't think of as being a problem with the digestion, absorption, and elimination of food, but quite often, they are.

When the elimination of wastes is not efficiently handled by the bowels, it places a larger burden upon all the other eliminatory organs within the body--the liver, kidneys, lungs and the skin. It also places added stress upon the lymphatic system. The whole body becomes overburdoned with waste, and fatigue quite often sets in.

Putrified waste in the bowel is a breeding ground for bacteria, and parasites, too.

Okay, now that I have your attention, (and yes, people in the USA get them, too...), let's talk about how to help prevent such a thing! Let's talk about how things were designed to work.

1. Ideally, as stated, food should only be in the system for 12-14 hours. To test this, eat corn and then watch to see when you see it again. If you don't like corn, then eat a whole lot of beets, and wait for your stool to turn red.

2. When the evacuation occurs, it should be effortless.

3. You should be eliminating as many times per day as you ate the day before. Remember, what doesn't come out, stays in. (And nutrients are very small, so most of the bulk is waste.)

4. The product should be in length as long as from the inside of your elbow all the way down to your wrist. Additionally, it should be as big around as the circle you can make with your fingers by placing the tip of your forefinger into the first joint of your thumb.

5. It should float, and it should break apart easily when the toilet is flushed.

6. There should be no or little smell. (Bad odor is a sign of putrification.)

7. There should also be no or little gas, for the same reason as stated above.

How can this be achieved? Well, I'll tell you what has worked for many people I know, and for many people I don't.

First of all, water consumption is very important. You can't get something clean without water, now can you? That just doesn't make sense!

So get used to drinking water...Pure water, and plenty of it. Water is needed, too, to help make sure blockages do not occur. Without enough water, constipation results.

The rule of thumb is to drink 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight.

The foods that are eaten play a very big role in this whole process, as discussed somewhat above. The best foods to eat in relation to what we're discussing are whole grains, (sprouted grains are the best!), and fresh raw fruit and vegetables,in part due to the high fiber content of these types of foods. (Organic, vine ripened, local is best for nutrient content without the pesticides and genetic toying around. We'll talk about that sometime soon.)

Fiber is what sweeps the intestinal walls and works to keep them clean. There are two types of fiber--that which is absorbable and that which is not. The non-absorbable fiber is what works to act as a broom and sweep waste from the colon, and the absorbable type does the same thing for our circulatory canals.

Raw foods are also where the enzymes are. Once food is cooked, they are gone. Some foods, such as grapes, figs, avacados, pineapples and honey, contain more enzymes than needed to digest themselves, and so they serve as a source of enzymes to help digest other foods. It is wise to eat these foods.
It is very unwise to eat foods which are overly processed and refined, for these foods not only "stick to your ribs," but they literally stick to your guts. (Hmmmm...And then they make you sick to your guts!)

Additional food enzymes may be used to supplement the enzymes in the food we are eating. I would recommend that you choose an enzyme source which is plant based and wide spectrum, and use enzymes whenever you eat.

There are a great deal of herbs which have historically been used to aid the body in its natural eliminatory function, such as cascara sagrada, psyllium, senna, and others. Many herbs help digestion, as well, such as the dandelion eaten raw before meals.

Relaxation also assists the digestive process. It's hard to digest when we're stressed. It changes our chemical make up when we are stressed. Our bodies are ready for fight or flight, not to eat. Muscles, nerves, and hormones are all involved in digestion, among other things. It's almost better not to eat at all than it is to eat when we're stressed.

Exercise plays an important role in elimination. Just remember...You have to MOVE to MOVE!

Issues of digestion and elimination are issues which directly relate to basic body design. If you're having a problem with food, first look to the food. Then look to how you process it, next. A sluggish bowel might indicate a sluggish lifestyle. Take a look at what you might do to increase your ability to help get this food through in a natural way.

Unnatural ways are very hard on your health. Chemical laxatives and digestive aids are extremely aggressive, and your body comes to rely on them, rather than doing the work for itself. If you give your body the food that it needs for fuel, and don't give it things that are going to clog it all up, then everything should work fine.

"Should." In a situation where all conditions are ideal, and no extenuating circumstances exist, or in cases where there is already a back-up of toxic waste. In these cases, natural things can be used in a more aggressive manner, but the gentle way usually works best. Easy does it, my friends, especially when dealing with bowels!

Colonic irrigations can also be very helpful keeping things moving along. Enemas can be given as well. We'll discuss how to do this at a different time, very soon.

As for the colonics, if you would like an irrigation treatment, we have a very well practiced (50 years licensed and practicing!) colon therapist who is within our wellness network of friends. We would be happy to make a referral to him, should you like more information on this. You can e-mail us at allnatureworks@aol.com. Please feel free to ask any questions you'd like.

Below you will find listed a few of the books on the subject that I'd recommend. (They make excellent reading material for in the bathroom...If you are in there long enough to read these books, chances are they might be just exactly the books that you need!)

Dr. Jensen's Guide to Better Bowel Care, by Dr. Bernard Jensen.

Also by Dr. Jensen is, Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management--a very informative book!

Another good book regarding the colon is, Colon Health: Key to Vibrant Health, by Dr. Norman W. Walker.

Finally, two books on enzymes that I would recommend are, Enzyme Nutrition: the Food Enzyme Concept, by Dr. Edward Howell, and Food Enzymes for Health & Longevity, also by Dr. Howell.

Goodnight, God bless, and remember to eat your liquids and drink your solids! (In other words, remember to chew your food well!!!)

Words of Comfort and Hope
Mood:  a-ok
Now Playing: I Believe
Topic: Reflective

Matthew 6:26 - Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value then they?

Matthew 7:7-11 - Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, who, if his son shall ask him for a loaf, will give him a stone; or if he shall ask for a fish, will give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Matthew 9:22 -
But Jesus turning and seeing her said, Daughter, be of good cheer; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Matthew 9:29 -
Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it done unto you.

Matthew 15:28 -
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it done unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was healed from that hour.

Matthew 17:20 - And he saith unto them, Because of your little faith: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Matthew 21:22 -
And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

There is a Power much greater than us, that can do what we cannot do for ourselves. This power is within us. Closer than our hands and our feet. No matter how big your problems may seem, or how great your need, please remember, that all things are possible. There is nothing that cannot be healed!

I believe for every drop of rain that falls
A flower grows,
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night
A candle glows.
I believe for everyone who goes astray
Someone will come to show the way.
I believe,
Oh, I believe.
I believe above the storm
The smallest prayer, will still be heard.
I believe that someone in that great somewhere
Hears every word
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,
Or touch a leaf
Or see the sky,
Then I know why I believe.
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,
Or touch a leaf
Or see the sky,
Then I know why I believe

Have a beautiful, spirit-filled day!

You're Not Alone
Mood:  lucky
Now Playing: I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends by The Beatles
Topic: Addiction
Well, we?re about half way into the New Year. How are your resolutions coming along? Are some of those habits a little bit harder to break than you might have thought? Perhaps they?re more than just habits. You might be addicted to chemicals, some of them in your own brain!

Alcoholism

Drug Addiction

Exercise Addiction

Food Addiction

Gambling Addiction

Internet Addiction

Nicotine Addiction

Sexual Addiction

Shopping Addiction

Think about it?.

Synthetic drugs, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives in genetically modified and processed foods, chemicals in our hair color all the way down to the polish on our little toes. There are chemicals in our water and air?it?s pretty hard to avoid.

Alcohol is a legal, socially acceptable drug which is addicting to 7.4% of the adult population, adversely affecting the lives of 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 years old in the U.S.

Of course we all know that nicotine is addicting. Smoking is a very hard ?habit? to kick. Many other ?bad habits? are also more than a matter of willpower. There is a physical component that?s not so easy to break.

Caffeine is an addictive drug. Had your cup of morning coffee?

What about sugar? The way that it?s processed renders it addictive, as well. Don?t you think it?s odd, that in most hospitals, babies are given sugar water almost first thing? Our taste buds don?t get a chance!

Candy, pop, cereals with fruit flavors and colors but none or not very much fruit?no nutrients except the artificial or inorganic ones which have been added back in. From synthetic infant formula instead of breast milk, to hot dogs with nitrates, milk devoid of enzymes and loaded with drugs in the form of hormones and antibiotics, and potatoes deep fried in grease. What are we feeding ourselves? What are we feeding our KIDS?

There is growing scientific evidence that much of the food we eat is addicting. This is due to the fact that once you change a substance...a food...and our food should be our medicine, so that includes drugs...you change it so that the body somewhat recognizes it as something it needs, but it doesn?t quite do the trick, and so the body keeps wanting more. What we need is the whole complete form, not some mutation of life.

I would like to suggest that all of these addictions can be alleviated to a large degree by not denying the body, but rather by supplying its needs. Crash diets don?t work. Instead of starving yourself any more when you?re already malnourished, try feeding the weight off instead! The trick is to feed it real food! Recovery from addiction of any kind is incomplete without a nutritional component.

Other components to recovery must accompany the physical efforts, such as mental determination, emotional healing, and spiritual readiness, but the physical component cannot be denied, or all the positive thinking in the world won?t be enough? You know what they say about good intentions! And as for prayer?Faith without works is dead. What good does it do to pray if we don?t make use of what God gave us to nurture our physical form? God has no hands but ours, and we must put the food to our lips for it to nourish our cells and provide us our sustenance.

Food Addiction, chemical dependency, co-dependency, addiction to perscription drugs, alcoholism, caffeine addiction, even gambling, internet, and sex addictions all have physical roots.

Roots. There?s a good word! Consider the effects of nutrients on the physical brain.

We need to nourish ourselves with nutrients from the soil, brought up through the roots of the plants.

We need to feed our body with foods that were processed by sunshine instead of chemicals; food which was allowed to become ripe before picking, fully packed with what we need to live healthy, fulfilled, and satisfied lives. We shouldn?t be left to search for what?s missing from food, turning to medications instead, be they in drugs or in a box of cookies or in our first cup of java each day.

We have become a society full of self-medicators. We?re trying to medicate away the effects of being undernourished and over-medicated, and it?s a vicious cycle. We use chemical substances?(or produce them in our own brain, as in the case of addictions like sex and gambling)?and this, in turn, depletes the body of nutrients in the body?s attempt to compensate, further adding to the deficiency problem that was there in the first place.

In the case of gambling addiction, for instance, there is evidence that the body is trying to compensate for decreased levels of dopamine and epinephrine in the brain by engaging in compulsive behaviors which will stimulate the production of these hormones. A better approach would be to nourish the endocrine system so that the body is better able to produce these hormones naturally. This can be better achieved through supplementation. Glyconutritional supplementation can be extremely beneficial in this process, as glycoproteins make up the receptors that neurotransmitters such as serotonin bind to on nerve-cell surfaces.

Essential fatty acids, glyconutrients, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes?.these all play a role. We need to give our brains what they need to conquer addiction, and not just make empty promises on New Year?s Eve every year!

Happy New Year One Day at a Time!

Balancing Act
Mood:  accident prone
Now Playing: Up On a Tight Rope by Leon Russell
Topic: Healing Process

Life is a Balancing Act! This is the key to good health.

Balance - To bring into or maintain in a state of equilibrium; A harmonious or satisfying arrangement or proportion of parts or elements, as in a design.

"As in design"...Yes. That is the goal!

So how do we come into balance? Blood pressure too high, blood sugar too low, moods out of kilter, way overweight, working too hard...Where in the world do we start? Even the checkbook is wrong!

Start with breathing. That's a good place to begin! Meditation and prayer practices have incorporated breathing techniques for ages and ages, for very good reasons. It opens the body and mind, and works to bring harmony.

We will be giving some workshops and publishing articles regarding breathing techniques, so be sure to check back often for those! In the meanwhile, here is some good information on breathing.. It has some really good exercises to help you get started with this!

Now what about water. Water is very important, of course, we all know. But what does it have to do with balance?

As The Charles Sturt University explains, "Water is the solvent for metabolic reactions in living cells. Many molecules and all ions important for the life of the cell are carried in an aqueous solution and these diffuse to reaction sites through the water in the cell. Metabolic reactions within the cell can occur only in solution where water is the solvent. It is critical for proper functioning of these reactions that the amount and concentration of water in the cell be kept constant. Most cells die when the water content is changed significantly."

In other words...Water is needed by every cell, to do everything that cells need to do!

Water regulates body temperature, removes wastes from the body; carries nutrients, oxygen, enzymes, hormonesand glucose to the cells; carries away toxins and metabloic waste from the cells for elimination; cushions the joints; strengthens the muscles; and provides natural moisture to skin and other tissues...We absolutely need it to live!

Why is it that people think if they are alive that they're fine. If you are experiencing thirst, then your body is already in a state of dehydration. Constipated? Dehydration. Even diahhrea can be a sign of dehydration, but I'll leave that lesson for another day.

How much water? Here is a general rule:

Take your body weight
Divide it in half
The number you get is the number of ounces of water you should drink every day...AT A MINIMUM!

Sound like a lot? To some, perhaps it might. But that's how much water your body needs to function the way that it was designed. Don't forget--It makes up more of our physical bodies than absolutely anything else!

For information regarding the safety of our nation's drinking water, be sure to read the extensive three part series published by the Houston Chronicle, entitled Tap Water At Risk.

We have been buying bottled water for use in our housesold for years, but there are a lot of problems with doing that, too--namely, the bottles. It's not a much better solution at all. Not if you consider the Hazards of Environmental Estrogens derived from synthetic sources.

Here's one solution. It's a lot more cost effective than having to pay for the cost of the loss of your health!

At any rate...even if you have terrible water...start drinking it! From SOMEWHERE! Pure water, of course is best! We're trying to eliminate poisons with water...Not drink more of them in.

But DRINK! PLEASE! You can't expect the body to find balance without it! Not when all the activities of every cell are dependent upon it's supply.

Balance. Yes. There's that word again. Let's talk now about balanced diets. What in the world does that mean?

Well, let's keep this real simple. Food gives us what we need to do what we need to do. It is our fuel. Some foods are good for some things, and some foods are good for other things. It all depends on which nutrients are contained in which food.

Soooooo....Eat a variety of foods for a variety of nutrients! :-D

Color is a good indication of the nutrient content of foods. When you fix up a plate, be sure that it's not all the same color. (And I mean REAL color! Not artificial!

It's also important in planning a balanced diet that the body's pH balance be taken into account. Our diet should be about 75% alkalinizing and only 25% acidic. Otherwise, valuable minerals will be depleted to bring the pH into balance, making the body more susceptible to the dengenerative diseases which these minerals protect us from.

We have pH testing strips available if you are interested. It's a very good indication of what's going on with your health!

Certain foods act to balance our emotional health as well as our physical health!

That makes sense, though, in the light of holistic health. You can't help but effect one realm of your being when interacting on one of the other realms. That is because we are WHOLE...not bits and pieces and parts. We are body, spirit and mind.

Herbs are another tool we can use to bring balance into our lives. Adapogenic herbs work to increase reisistance and resilience to stress, helping to balance blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate, and maintain homeostasis throughout the body.

Aromatherapy and flower essences have particularly balancing effects on the emotions.

Exercise, of course...Balance...Yoga is exceptionally good.

Balanced lifestyle...Moderation in all things. Right now I need to moderate my work schedule a little and get myself to bed!

SLEEP is EXTREMELY important to balance! We'll talk more later about some of these things. To be continued...at a later time when I'm awake!

Balance

Just keep that word in mind...We'll pick up from here another day.

Goodnight and sleep well!

Curiouser and Curiouser
Mood:  mischievious
Now Playing: Golden Afternoon - Alice in Wonderland

I'm going to take a walk at Quail Hollow today! I love it there, and I'm fortunate enough to live close enough to walk in this beauty whenever I'd like. I love to walk in the woods! Think of all the health benefits you get when you walk in the woods: The chance to get close to nature and feel at peace with it; the good exercise you get from walking which helps with so many things, from being able to sleep better all the way to building nice legs and being good for your heart; plus it's good to breathe in the fresh forest air...There's GREAT aromatherapy there!

For instance, did you know that breathing in the scent of pine is actually a disinfectant for cleaning the lungs? Nature takes good care of us!

Mmmmm...And the flowers! And sunshine! There's something to be said for the healing power of just feeling a part of it all!

Quail Hollow is nice because it has so many environments to visit, and they all change through the seasons, so it's like so many parks all in one!

I love to go out into the meadows and prairies and bogs! It's like a fantasy land I could get lost in.
Keep an eye out for Upcoming Events, because we'll be planning some nature walks and lectures soon, to be held at the park!

Nature is awesome wherever you go. That's where I feel close to God. God is just as present in the tall buildings and the city streets, but you can really feel the energizing power in its pure form in when you're right out in the middle of the way things were meant to be!

There are so many things about nature that make me curious! What lives in this hole, what made that noise, what is this flower called? There are so many things we can learn about ourselves and the world from just watching nature.

Did you know, for instance, that desert tortoises will travel miles to mine and eat the calcium needed to keep their shells strong? Did you know that monkeys, bears, coatis, and other animals rub citrus oils and pungent resins into their coats as insecticides and antiseptics against insect bites? Chimpanzees swallow hairy leaves folded in a certain way to purge their digestive tracts of parasites, and birds line their nexts with plants that protect their chicks from blood-draining mites and lice!

This and more information can be found in one of my favorite books, entitled Wild Health, by Cindy Engel. We can learn a lot from animals by learning how they keep themselves well! (How many times have you heard a squirrel sneeze from the trees? Hahaha!)

But if an animal does get a little bit sick in the wild, it will respond to infection by fasting, resting, staying warm, and allowing vomiting and diarrhea to do their jobs. Our hinderance of these natural responses within us is done at our peril! Animals are much wiser in their instinctual ways.

People sure can be silly. People do things like:

~feeding their kids things that are known to make them hyperactive;

~getting eye jobs and nose jobs, tummy tucks and thigh tucks, new breasts and new chins and feet sculpted to fit better into shoes with unnaturally pointy toes;

~cloning human cow combinations and mixing people with monkeys, and putting human blood in pigs and human brains in mice...where is this all leading to?

They're even putting human genes into rice! Science is getting tooooo weird!

(And we wonder why our planet...our bodies...our emotions...are so out of balance. It's not a mystery to me!)

So, as for me, I'll learn about health by observing what occurs naturally in nature. There's something to be said for keeping it simple, you know?

Golden Afternoon

Have a great day!

Did you know that a Pyrenean goat with a broken leg has been known to make itself a plaster of clay and grasses, using it's mouth? It actually made itself a poultice of lichen and clay and applied it to the wound! (WITHOUT having a cloned human brain!!!)

Happy Memorial Day!
Mood:  bright
Now Playing: You Are My Sunshine!
Topic: Reflective
Hello!

My Dad used to sit me on his lap and read stories to me and call me his Sunshine. I'm thinking about him today. My father would be proud of me, I think. At least I hope he would be. So much of what I am is due to his inspiration. He died from colon cancer...or rather from complications due to the treatment he underwent. If only I had known then some of the things I know now, well perhaps...Perhaps it was just his time, or perhaps...I can't help but to think perhaps. Perhaps I can help someone else now. If so, it will be for him.

I'm thinking about my children's father today, as well, and wishing he were still around to be a part of this all. He was a social worker, and he knew what natural health could accomplish because he saw it happen in me. He wanted to do this type of work. He had a lot of good ideas as to how to incorporate principles of natural healing into the social work field. But he died. He died too early. I wish he were still alive. There are so many things that I'd like to share with him of what I have learned. Perhaps the illness which took him might have been relieved. I've learned about things that make me wonder..."perhaps."

There are a lot of people who come into my mind on Memorial Day. I think about the woman I spoke with one time who needed...wanted...so badly to learn about herbs. She was on a breathing machine. At the time, all I knew to tell her was about the herbs that I had come to recognize as superb...and they were...but they were quite expensive, as well. Well, she died. She died before I got the chance to tell her that herbs grow for free in her yard. In memory of her, I always want to teach those who might need this information to live.

I think about all the people I know who have died from alcoholism, or from addiction, or from taking their lives in one last act of despair. I want to give reason to people like them to have hope.

I think of my mother. My mother is still alive, and I want to help her now, while she is. She always asks me how long I want her to live...she will be 90 on July 1st! I tell her that I want her to live for as long as she can, but that the important thing is that I want her to feel good for that time. I don't want my mother grunting and groaning and hurting each day. I want her to be up, feeling good! That's why I do this work! Just to help people learn how to feel better...That's all. The miracles are all up to God!

I had a dog, Ruthie. Ruthie was almost 16. She died last October, and I really miss her a lot. But the nice thing about the way Ruthie died was that she felt good at the end. She had lived a hard life...the first 10 years were spent entirely outside. Then she had a lot of health problems, such as arthritis and flea allergies. I worked with Ruthie with herbs, and when she died, she felt good! Her allergies had been gone for quite some time, (as well as the fleas!), and she ran like a puppy out in the yard, no sign of achy knees. That's the power of herbs!

So blessings to you on this Memorial Day, and let's remember to do all we can to help make life a little bit better for those of us still here. Do it for them. Do it for the soldiers who fought for us to have the freedom of choice. Choose to live...and choose to live in good health and to spread the good news everywhere!

On Memorial Day I want to remember the people...and animals...all over the world who have died in suffering and pain. May I do my part to help lessen that. Will you join me together in this? God bless all those who went before us, and God bless those yet to come.

Now let's fire up the grill and get on with this holiday! (Mmmm...Roasted veggies sound GOOD!)

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!!

Getting Acquainted
Mood:  on fire
Now Playing: Time to Relax by Invizable Munkee
Topic: General Info

Let's sit back now and start getting a little more comfortable with one another. I'm Mary...or Mary Jo...or Jody...or Dr. Eshelman...whichever name you prefer.

Why not post a comment to me, and let me know who you are!

I would like to point out some of the features of this website which might make it more useful to you. If you have any suggestions as to how we could make it more user friendly, by all means, please let me know. I want people to be comfortable here. The URL for the main website is www.allnaturalhealthworks.com. It is still under a great deal of construction, but it is due soon for release. In the meanwhile, if you want a wee little peek, you can find it by clicking here There's still LOTS of work to do on it, though, so please, if you visit it now, please come back again soon! My son is helping me put it together. He's doing a wonderful job! He's doing all of the coding himself. He's teaching himself as he goes! I'd say a lot of very complimentary things about my son here, but he doesn't like it when I do the "Mom" thing! You can see for yourself on his website, some of why I'm so proud!) www.invizablemunkee.com

In the way I designed the website, I'm hoping people will want to come back and back. The idea is to make it an entire online learning center, with all the resources at hand. The Research Section alone should keep you busy for years! And the Daily Smile page should keep you coming back! Hahaha!

That and the Stress Relief Paintball game! (Stress can be real hard on your health!) In the Education portion of the website, you will find the Online Learning pages, with lessons and articles, as well as instructions for making a lot of good recipes and formulas. (This portion is still under a lot of heavy construction. Please check back often for more!) I see my job as a naturopath to offer people enough reason to find things out for themselves, and to help them learn how to recognize what's true from false. I don't have all the answers. I'm not a walking encyclopedia, but I do know how to use reference books. There are other ways, too, in which we learn, besides books. I will try to find ways to lead you through practical learning, either by extending opportunities to you to attend classes, workshops and groups, or by leading you through activities as a part of our learning right here. Be sure to check for Upcoming Events! I know. A lot of these pages are still under construction. But pretty soon they won't be, and I'll try and keep you busy with what IS ready till then! Along the same lines as learning to recognize good information from bad...(there is a LOT of false information out there! We'll talk to great lengths about this!)...is also learning to recognize good natural health products from those which are ineffective, or perhaps even dangerous. There is a lot to be considered, and sometimes what we might normally think is the best, is actually the far less superior choice. If we are to learn to make good choices, we need to learn what points need to be considered in making these choices. For instance, in the case of herbs (and any food, really!), it is important not only which herb to use, but how it was grown, when it was picked, how it was processed and stored. It is important to know which form to choose for which purpose, and how to effectively use. It's also extremely important to know what other ingredients are used in the formula, and the way in which it was devised. Some herbs are grown in soil that is weak, and then sprayed with pesticides and picked at the wrong time of year. Sometimes they are not stored in a manner so as to retain freshness, or treated with heat and chemicals. Sometimes they might even have mold. Believe me, it's important to know your source. The best source, always, is herbs from right where you live. (Provided your lawn isn't chemically treated, because in that case you wouldn't have any herbs, and if you did they'd be poisonous then. See why the source matters so much? They do this to many commercial herbs! I urge you to know your source!) If you choose to purchase your herbs, which often we do for reasons of convenience and formulation beyond what we know, then it is important to buy them from a reputable source. Our Products Section features products which we have chosen to be of exceptionally good quality. There will be a few more posted soon. Included in the selections are not only pre-formulated products, but also the raw ingredients to prepare products yourself, if that's something that you'd like to do. I do a little of both! To understand a little more of what our mission is here, be sure to read About Us. All Natural HealthWorks! isn't just me! There is a whole network of "us!" We have a network of holistically minded people who have joined together to provide education and services! You may choose one of these people to work with you by reading their bio and contacting us, or you may choose particular services you'd like, and we'll do the referral for you. If you would like to be involved on our team, please let us know. Part of why this is such a healing place is because we recognize everyone has healing gifts! If you'd like to find ways to develop your gifts to share, we can help you with that! We always have room for beginners! And if you are a seasoned professional, we have a spot for you, too! Be sure to read what we can offer to you! (This goes for Support positions, too!) Hmmmm....Let's see...What else should I highlight to you regarding the website? We have a Dog-Gone Good Section on Pets!!! EVERYONE deserves natural health! You will find lots on our website...drug prevention is something you'll read lots about. That topic is close to my heart. You'll also read a lot about God. I don't apologize for that to anyone, but I do need to clarify. When I speak of God, I have no intention of trying to push my idea of God onto you. That word means so many things to so many people, and it's a very personal thing. You can substitute other words if you like. That works even better sometimes, if the word is something unfamiliar or frightening to you. To some people that word might be. There could be all sorts of meanings attached. The only thing I will say about my beliefs is that I believe God is all-good, everywhere present, to be worshipped in spirit and love. I don't believe there are "accidents;" I believe there is a Higher Power at work...a force which works to our good. (Remember? All-good and all-present! Phew! What a relief and a blessing to know!) Anyways, that's my take on it all. To me, God made us to be well, whether you consider that to be simply a biological thing or whether you believe in a Spiritual Power at work. Either way, I believe we were designed with wellness and survival in mind, if we just use what we were given, and don't mess it up by distorting it too much out of shape! Spirituality is something we can't avoid talking about, if we're going to talk about holistic healing and health. We are whole beings, and our spiritual selves are a part of that. In fact, that's where the real truth of our being lies...in the part that's unseen. However we do have bodies! Sometimes we get so spiritually minded that we forget about that! So perhaps to say the spiritual part of us is the most important is unfair in the whole picture of health. We have to take care of our bodies, as well, if we want to live here in this form. And our minds...What of our minds? Our minds and emotions form the link between body and spirit...How we use our mind can build us up and make us strong, or our minds can drive us insane. There are links between all three that could easily lead into another whole blog right here and now. I'll save that for another day soon! Suffice it to say that in dealing with holistic health, the topic of spirituality and faith will arise. I hope this introduction, in brief, to the website has proved to be useful to you. If you have any suggestions as to how we can make this better, please let us know, for sure! Also please let us know if you would like to help us make this vision a reality. We need extra support now at the beginning. We need people to work before there's even money to pay! (It's a good learning experience, though, and the money will be coming soon!) Speaking of money...Not to be crass, but it's a matter that should be discussed. I don't ever want money to be an issue. I believe healing is meant for us all. God (nature) provided to us everything that we need to be well. You can get healthy with just prayers, sunshine, herbs from the yard, exercise, clean water and song! Learn how to do accupressure or reflexolgy with just your own hands for tools, and there's something else you can do! There are plenty of things you can do to improve your health without money, and I love teaching those things! Then there are things you can do to reduce the cost of things you choose to buy. We have programs in place to reduce the cost...everything from bartering programs to apprenticeship programs to marketing products yourself. We will do whatever we can to work with you. We're even trying to get insurance in place! We have placed a language translator onto the website. We want to be able to reach everyone that we can! However, some of the writing has been placed onto pictures and then tranlated into html, and the translator cannot pick up this. I would suggest that if someone is trying to translate a page that won't translate, that they type the words into the box. It takes longer, but it can be done. If you have questions, we have one person on-board (Dr. Lupe Banuelos), who speaks fluent Spanish. Other than that, I'm willing to try and muddle my way through just about any language with someone on the translator, if they would like to converse directly with me. There's more than one way to communicate. If someone wants help, I will try. A note about the products we offer...Not only do we offer high quality health products, we also offer a wide range of other products, as well. For instance, books and educational resources, neti pots and yoga supplies, all-natural cosmetics, etc. Please support us in our efforts to bring you quality education for free and consider shopping from us! We even sell toothpaste online, educational nature toys, and we have a great product to save you big bucks at the gas tank, as well! Please think of us first when you shop! (We even have CHERRY TREES!!!) Also, please don't forget to visit our Links Page! You will find items to which the above applies, such as: Organic Flowers! Way cool! (Please be sure to link from our page! Thanks!)

You will also find extremely useful and potentially life saving information and resources...

...as well as links to some very nice people and friends!

You can find lots of great information by visiting us on our Links Page! Be sure to bookmark this page!

You can view the rest of our links by clicking here! As for me, I think I'll go to a spa! Doesn't that sound like a really great plan?! I look forward to getting to know you better in health! Backyard Medicine
Mood:  lazy
Now Playing: Dandelion by the Rolling Stones
Topic: Herbs
Once upon a time I used herbs, and overcame sooooooo many problems I had. Then I ran out of money. Uh-oh! But you know what? I had a thought, and then I went to school and one of my instructors (Dr. Phil Fritchey) said the very same thing: HERBS DON'T GROW IN A CAPSULE IN A MANUFACTURING FACILITY SOMEWHERE IN UTAH! HERBS GROW RIGHT UNDER OUR FEET!

Why do the simplest things sometimes take such a long time to sink in? I knew that all along, but it somehow just didn't hit home.

So what's in my yard? All sorts of wonderful things! And I'll bet they are in your yard, as well...or at least I hope that they are!

I know some people pay lots of money to kill all those terrible "weeds." The weed killing companies do a good job of convincing us that weeds are nooooooo good!

Well, they're no good in a garden, perhaps...But then again...My garden is nothing but "weeds!" Hahaha! I wish I had a digital camera! I'd take a few pictures! You'd see! I mow all around the good weeds!

For instance, take a look at common plaintain. Everyone has it, unless they use herbicides to poison their yard.

(I would strongly suggest that if herbicides/pesticides are used in the yard, not to go barefoot outside. What a shame, too, because God put really good medicine into the plants that were meant to be walked on in barefeet. People were not born with shoes! Click here to view the risks.)

There are two types of common plaintain: Broadleaf and lanceleaf. Both types grow plentiful in my backyard!

Plantago Major

Plantago Lanceolata

Plantain staunches bloodflow, encourages repair of damaged tissue, can be used in place of comfrey to treat bruises and broken bones, and is also used to relieve bee stings, insect and spider bites, poison ivy and rashes. What a nice thing to grow in the yard! Step on a bee? Grab plantain! It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorous properties, and it works as an expectorant, demulcent and diuretic. The seeds are a mucilagionous laxative and anti-diabetic (psyllium). It is extremely useful to have!

Then there's my favorite! The dandelion! It's my favorite flower, I swear! They look so happy with their yellow faces, smiling in my yard everywhere!

Taraxacum Officianale

Dandelion is one of the most nutritionally dense plants that there is! It is very beneficial while breastfeeding. It is also very cleansing and healing to the kidneys, liver, gall bladder and spleen. It opens passages and is effective in removing obstructions. It is an excellent diuretic, and does not deplete minerals from the body, but rather supplies them. As dandelion works to reduce excess fluids in the body, it helps to control blood pressure. It is a bitter herb and is a very good aid to digestion when eating a few leaves before meals.

You can use them to make wishes, too!

When picking herbs from the yard to use in preparations--whether tinctures, teas, tossed salads, or ointments--it is best to stay at least 50ft from the road, so as to avoid car pollution contamination, particularly when using the leaves or other arial parts. Other than exhaust fumes, most herbs you'll find in your yard are safe. A good rule of thumb is to watch what the bunnies all eat!

Peppermint is a good herb we all recognize, but how many of us know it is more than a candy, or a flavoring for chewing gum? Peppermint is one of my most commonly used herbs in medicinal formulas, due to its activating effects upon the other herbs--It acts as a catalyst.

Mentha Piperita (Labiatae)

Peppermint is good for the digestion, and may be used for nausea, colic, vomiting, and spasmodic pain in the bowels. It provides symptomatic relief of asthma and chronic bronchitis, as well as being useful for toothaches and headaches.

Besides all of that, peppermint smells good to people and bad to mosquitos! What more can you ask for than that?!

A cousin of peppermint is the herb, Melissa, which is also
referred to as Lemon Balm, or Bee Balm.

Melissa Officinalis(Labiatae)

Bee Balm is easy to grow, and is very useful for treating bee stings, among other things. It has long been revered as a remedy for nervous system complaints, and as an effective treatment for mild depression, anxiety, restlessness, and irritability.

Melissa is said to lift the spirits and lighten the heart. Interestingly enough, it is also used to relieve heart palpitations. It has carminative, nervine, anti-spasmodic, anti-depressive, hypotensive, diaphoretic, anti-microbial, hepatic, and anti-viral actions.

Another herb good for both heart palitations and a heart heavy with meloncholy is the herb known as Motherwort.

Leonurus Cardiaca(Labiatae)

Motherwort is one of the best herbs to strengthen the heart and make the mind cheerful.

It is also a rememdy for the nerves and kidneys, and is useful in relieve premenstrual tension and pain. It is known to promote relaxation without bringing about drowsiness, making it a desirable anti-anxiety herb.

Motherwort is useful in cases of delayed menstruation, and should be avoided during times of heavy menstruation and pregnancy.

Another rather grand statement in my yard is made by the plentiful burdock plants that are growing quite large!

Niu Bang Zi (Chinese) This is the name for Burdock.

Burdock is widely used in both Western and Chinese herbal medicine as a powerful detoxifying herb. It helps the body to cleanse itself of waste products, and is thought to be particularly useful in eliminating heavy metals from within the blood. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties, is a diuretic, and has hypoglycemic effects. It is thought to strengthen the immune system and has anti-tumorous properties. Burdock is usueufl in any condition where toxicity is a key factor.

The only thing bad about burdock is all the burrs! They don't come out of hair too easily without using scissors...That goes for human as well as dog hair, so be careful when you harvest them! (The seeds are used to remove toxins in fevers and infections, such as measles and mumps.)

Poke is an extremely effective purgative herb, which is very useful, if you are trying to purge. However, if you are not trying to purge, you might want to go easy with poke!

Phytolacca Americana(Phytolaccaceae)When dealing with blocks, there is no more effective herb in all of nature to help clear the body of these. It works on the bowel, blood, lymphatic system and lungs. Poke was a traditional remedey for gout, fevers, and kidney stones, and today is recognized as one of the most promising cancer fighting herbs in existence and is currently the object of a great deal of study. It is excellent for cleaning lymphatic congestion as well as the liver.

The greens may be steamed and eaten, but drain water off 2-3 times duering cooking, due to the purgative effect. Poke is usually used in combination with other herbs, to balance the strong cleansing effects. Dandelion is a good choice. The berries of the poke plant are toxic. They can be cooked to remove the toxins and make preeparations, but other herbs are a better choice.

Isn't it nice that God put a safety feature into herbs such as this, which are powerful medicines, by making us vomit if we use too much of the herb? That makes me feel safe to know!

Comfrey, known also as knitbone, is a very highly regarded herb said to "heal all inward wouinds and ruptures." (K'Eogh, 1735)

Symphytum Officinale(Boraginaceae)

Comfrey is an extremely useful herb with a rich history of great healing, but it has come under scrutiny lately due to one of its alkaloids. The FDA advises against taking comfrey internally, due to the presence of trace amounts of phrrolizidine alkaloids. These same akaloids are found in greater amounts in spinach, as well as beer. It is advisable to use all of these products with care. The highest concentration, by far, is found in the root. The leaves are considered safe.

Historically, comfrey has been used both externally and internally with great success to treat a variety of conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and respiratory complaints. Its reputation as an injury healer is unrivaled, as it has been used for thousands of years to promote the healing of brusies, sprains, fractures, and broken bones. It has also been used in the treatment of scars. In relation to skin, it has also been used effectively in the treatment of acne and boils as well as rashes and fungal skin infections.

Comfrey's healing power is so rapid and great, that it is not advisable to apply it directly to puncture wounds. In such cases, the wound may begin to heal so quickly that tissue may form over the wound before it is healed deeper down, with abscesses possibly forming. With deep wounds, Ajuga Reptans (Bugle) is a much better choice; otherwise, comfrey cannot be beat for bruises, boo boos, and breaks!

The last herb I am going to introduce you to from my yard this evening is the delicate little sweet tasting Ground Ivy!

Glechoma Hederacea(Labiatae)

Ground Ivy is one of those little herbs that the bunny rabbits just love so much! Do you know why? Because it is nice and sweet, and so totally safe...It's a very good choice for children.

Ground ivy was a popular treatment for chronic cough in medieval times, and was considered a valuable remedy for tinnitus, as well.

Ground ivy is a tonic, diuretic, and a decongestant. Throat and chest problems benefit from its use, and it is particularly well suited to problems involving the mucous memberanes of the ear, nose, throat. Additionally, it is useful in working with problems relating to the digestive system, such as gastritis, acid indigestion, and diarrhea. It is also considered to be of benefit to the kidneys. And it's a most pretty color of vibrant purple, as well!

I encourage you to take a closer look at the medicine you have in your own yard. What are those things you call weeds? Could the be God's gift to you, for use when you need some kind of answer to healing prayer? Has the answer been there all along?

Proper identification is very important, but remember, the body rejects what's not safe when the danger comes (in small doses) from a natural source. The roots of a plant are generally the strongest. If a rabbit can get to it, and if it goes back for more, then chances are you'll be safe. Either that, or you'll throw up or otherwise eliminate.

As a beginner, I would recommend that you stick with what you know. We all know dandelions, I'm sure! Dandelions, red clover, peppermint, lemon balm...these kinds of herbs are sure bets!

May I recommend that you obtain a couple of books to help with identification. It's good to have more than one, due to differences in photography. A few books that I like a lot are The Enclycopedia of Medicinal Plants, by Andrew Chavalier, and the Peterson Field Guide along with A Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants

Herbs are God's gifts to us for providing the nourishment our bodies need to sustain our good health. They were given to us as food.

~Genesis 1:29

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

If you have a few more dandelions or other "good weeds" than you'd like, they may be effectively dealt with in a way so as not to harm the environment and expose yourself and others, including children and animals, to the hazards of chemical intervention.
