All we were hoping for was 8 used single bed white sheets to make baptismal gowns. I get a call from Ida that the group has arrived and want to give a 100 shekel love gift to each of Arad’s 42 holocaust survivors! Awesome!
When all was said and done, 42 holocaust survivors in Arad each received 100 shekels (cash), a Russian Bible, 5 testimonial books, 3 booklets, 2 posters, soap, toothbrushes, and the food items leftover from the 11th which consisted of: 1 kg rice, 500g noodle, 350g honey, and 1 candy bar per person.
The tour group felt their pain, climbed flights of stairs in their footsteps, looked into their eyes, held their hands…
Many live on top floors of building that do not have elevators. In building without elevators, the higher up, the cheaper the rent. In America if an elevator jams or is out-of-order…it gets fixed ASAP (as soon as possible), maintenance is awakened 2 a.m., whatever! Here it may take years, if ever. Even if one is blessed to live in a building with an elevator, and it happens to work…the juice gets cut off on Shabbat and other High Holy Days.
