Who Are You?

Like most Afro-Americans I had no clue where in Africa my ancestors came from. All I knew was that my last name is Beckford and that my father was born in Jamaica, W.I.

As a kid, I vaguely recall my father telling me that he was born in Kingston, Jamaica, served in the US Army, and was involved with the Marcus Garvey movement.

Pop's main profession was as a merchant marine. He also had rental property and a bar in Boston. Later opening a restaurant in May Pen, Jamaica where he specialized in curry goat.

I'm sure that most of you reading this page are familiar with Martin Luther's speech "I had a dream"... but how many of you ever heard of Malcolm X's speech "Who are you?"

Well, I heard this speech of Malcolm's years ago which left me with 4 unanswered questions: "Who am I?" "Where did I come from?" "What language did I speak?" and "What was my real name?"
