On April 5, 2009, Whitaker and Danny Glover were given chieftancy titles in Imo State, Nigeria. They were named chiefs among the Igbo community of Nkwerre, by HRH Eze Dr. Chijioke Jeki Okwara IV. Whitaker was given the title "Nwannedinamba of Nkwerre", which means A Brother in a Foreign Land.
