Too Big For His Britches

The Russian born Jews are generally larger in stature then that of the Sabras (Israeli born Jews). Some of these big guys have a real problem finding clothes their size here in Israel. So, when sorting through the used clothes, I always set aside the big items for my special cliental.

This one guy took a pair of 48” waist pants, sewed a ‘v’ shaped piece of mismatched material in the back to make them fit, and was wearing them the next time I saw him.

Yeah, he had on this huge shirt which covered the seat of his pants. He lifted it up and showed me! I never saw anything like it!

Well, he seemed quite happy and content but I wasn’t. Perhaps I was moved with compassion. Nevertheless, the next week I showed up with my wife’s measuring tape. Somehow I managed to measure him: 60 in (152.4 cm) waist x 25 in (63.5 cm) inseam. For the heck of it, I did an online price check and I was shocked. Pants his size were running $59.99 (shipping not included).

Well, I talked to a lady who runs a nearby tailor shop. Bottom-line, she could make me a pair for 200 shekels (125 labor, 75 material) a total of about $40 dollars.

It took her a while, but she did it. She completed one pair and is working on another!

P.S.
I started to leave this out, but it is kind of funny!

I was trying to use discretion; calling him into the storefront, I gave him the bag which contained his new pants. When he saw them he immediately began stripping right then and there. He was determined and excited about trying them on. He had just removed his old pants, and I was fumbling with my digital camera trying to get it ready…when one of the guys walked in to use the bathroom.

Here we were, behind closed doors, he in his shorts, me with a camera, and we both had an “Oh no!” look on our faces. The guy looked right at us, but didn’t see us …you know one of those God-type things when He’s having fun with you (what we call His sense of humor).
