The Very Cool MOD Chip

SCPH 10x / PSone

Classic Chip Installation Instructions

Before disassembling your PSone be sure to have a clean, well-lit work area with storage containers for loose parts. You will require a 15 watt pencil tip soldering iron, a phillips head screwdriver, solder and electrical tape to secure the MOD chip to the mainboard (optional).

Disconnect your PSone from the power supply as well as all video hookups. Remove any controllers, memory cards and compact discs that may remain in the system. Flip the unit over and remove the (6) case screws. Store screws.

Turn the PSone right side up and remove the top half of the case. The laser assembly is to be removed next. Begin by locating the ribbon cable connecting the lens assembly to the mainboard. Firmly grip the ribbon cable at the large base connector and begin to gently pull upward to free the ribbon cable from the base connector. Close attention must be made when handling this cable. It is extremely fragile and requires extreme care. Once the ribbon is free, pull the remaining connecting cable from the board. Again caution should be used. If the connectors are tight, gently rock left and right until they are unplugged. Always grip by the connecting base. Never pull connectors by the wires. Once all connectors are cleared, gently remove the lens assembly. To do this gently grasp either side and lift it straight up, off of the mounting posts. Be careful not to touch the exposed glass lens or drop the assembly. Set assembly aside.

Once the laser assembly is removed, a metal plate remains covering the mainboard. Gently lift up the plate from the system and set aside.

Please note before handling the circuit board touch a piece of grounded metal to remove any static charge from your body. These components are static sensitive. Remove the main circuit board gently from the case and set the case aside.

Note: It may not be necessary to remove the circuit board from the case for the soldering procedure. This is optional.

You are now ready to solder the Modchip to the mainboard. The Modchip is to be installed on the top of the motherboard. Using the provided picture compare it to the board to identify the area in which the chip is to be installed.

To start you should have a fine tip, low power soldering iron (15 to 30 watt). Using the solder provided, quickly touch the iron to the solder and form a small ball of solder on the iron tip. Place the exposed Modchip wire end on the proper solder pad and quickly touch the iron tip to the same pad. The solder will now bond the wire to the contact pad. To complete the wiring, attach the other remaining wires to the indicated soldering pads using the same procedure as above.

CAUTION: Due to high temperature involved in soldering, you must only hold the tip on the spot you are soldering to for enough time to allow the solder to flow. If too much heat is applied to the contact it may damage the chip, lift a trace on the motherboard, or burn the insulation back on the wire. If you burn the insulation off of the wire, trim and re-solder the connection. Removing too much insulation could result in the exposed wire touching other traces on the board damaging the console!

Please Note: With the 10x PSone, you will be required to use 3 wires (1,6,8) on the Classic Modchip and one jumper wire.

Once all of the wires are attached, visually inspect the board to ensure that no exposed copper is touching any adjacent traces. You can now lay the MOD Chip on the mainboard in an area that will clear the metal plate during re-assembly. Be careful not to damaged the Modchip during this procedure.

Once you are pleased with the work, follow the above steps in reverse order to re-assemble your PSone.

Reconnect the unit to your power source and video outputs. Power up your PSone. The chip will take a few seconds to initialize when playing imports or backups. If the unit is turned on and the white screen does not boot up within a few seconds shut the unit off immediately. Disassemble the PSone and start from the beginning to try and find the fault.
