Jim Thome (Home Run hit during this at-bat)

Baseball Trivia: One of the reasons that Ed Cicotte help throw the 1919 World Series was because the White Sox manager (Kid Gleason) sat Cicotte for two weeks in September under orders from owner Charles Comiskey so that Comiskey wouldn't have to pay a $10,000 bonus.

Sometimes stories like this are simply folklore, but thanks to the fine folks at http://www.retrosheet.org/ you can see for yourself that Cicotte started on September 5th in a game that the White Sox won 9-1. This would have made his record approximately 27-6. He did not make another start until September 19th!!! Two weeks off for a guy who regularly pitched every fourth day. He finished the season 29-7. Considering that the 1919 season was only 140 games due to World War 1, to win 29 games is an incredible achievement. Tough break, Ed.

Who'll drill who, Pedro? Although that's Dwight Gooden on the mound for the Indians.
