STILL ANOTHER JAZZ 1-2-3-4
Duffie/Robertson
These are modest variations on Mark Aspiazu's "Another Jazz 1-2-3-4" from Mr. Gadfly #3. His routine
was in turn a variation on Solomon & Aronson's "Jazz 1-2-3-4" routine from Sessions. Peter Kane's
seminal "Jazz Aces" was, of course, the original parent of all these effects.
Biddle/Bottom Variant
Openly remove the Ace, 2, 3, and 4 of Spades, and the four Jacks. The rest of the deck isn't used during this routine.
Order of packet from face-to-back:
A - 2 - 3 - 4 - black Jack - black Jack - red Jack - red Jack.
Working
Display the packet face-up then count from right hand to left, using a Biddle count.
1a. Count Ace fairly.
1b. Count 2 fairly.
1c. Count 3 but get break over 3.
1d. Biddle 3 as you count 4, keeping right thumb break over 3.
1e. Count black Jack fairly.
1f. Add back 3 as you count black Jack.
1g. Count red Jack fairly.
1h. Count red Jack fairly.
Continue as in Another Jazz 1-2-3-4; i.e.
2. Turn packet face-down and deal the Ace, 2, 3, and 4 from left to right, except that the Ace (?) is actually
dealt from the bottom. The 4 is dealt face-up.
3a. Turn the packet face-up and Elmsley Count to show four Jacks.
3b. Turn face-down and deal the top card overlapping the 4, calling it a Jack.
3c. Pick up the 3 (?) and place it 2nd from the top of the Jack packet.
3d. Tap the packet against the supposed Jack, then turn it face-up to reveal the 3. Turn the packet face-down and
Elmsley Count to show 4 Jacks.
4. Repeat all of step 3 with the 2.
4. Repeat with the Ace. At the end, the Ace, 2, 3, and 4 of Spades are spread on the table, and the Jacks are spead
above them.
Biddle/No Bottom Variant
Order of packet from face-to-back:
A - 2 - 3 - 4 - black Jack - red Jack - black Jack - red Jack.
Working
Secretly get break over bottom card (red Jack).
1a. Take Ace and bottom card (red Jack) as one.
1b. Count 2 fairly.
1c. Count 3, get break.
1d. Biddle 3 and you count 4, keeping thumb break over 3.
1e. Count black Jack fairly.
1f. Add back 3 as you count red Jack. Get break under red Jack.
1g. Take back red Jack as you count black Jack.
1h. Count red Jack fairly.
Proceed as above, except that there is no need for a bottom deal.
Biddle/No Bottom Variant #2
Here's another way of getting set that Peter Duffie came up with. Arrange the packet from face to back:
red Jack - black Jack - red Jack - black Jack - A - 2 - 3 - 4 (red Jack at face).
Working
1. Say, "We've got 4 jacks" - count off the Jacks into your left hand, then drop the rest on top.
2. "And the A-2-3-4" -
a) Count the Ace taking top & bottom together
b) Count the 2 fairly
c) Count the 3 and keep break below
d) Count the 4 and steal the 3 - immediately your right hand temporarily deposits the Jacks face-up on table.
Now turn the spot packet face-down and deal them left to right, turning the 4 face-up. Finally use face card of
jacks to scoop up packet. Now continue with routine.
