Handmade Paper

These are some samples of designer handmade papers that I have made.
Not all papers are available for sale but custom paper batches may be created if possible.
Types of plant material vary depending on seasonality and geographical location.
All papers are treated with retention aid (to hold dyes and pigments) and with sizing (to make paper suitable for pen and ink use).

Willow Bark Paper
This paper is made from a mixture of hemp
half-stuff and the inner and outer bark
from weeping willow branches.
The colors were obtained by dying several
different vats of pre-beaten hemp half-stuff
with synthetic pigments.
The first picture is of my paper on display at Warren Wilson College.
The other pictures are close-ups of the willow paper
in the natural color, red, and purple. The last
picture is of a one-of-a-kind piece of willow/hemp mixture.
The blue and white parts of the sheet are synthetically
dyed hemp and the brown parts are straight willow.
I love the way this sheet looks like a view
of earth from outer space.

Hemp-Based Papers
These papers are made with a variety of
different methods and colors using some natural
dyes and pigments as well as synthetic.
The first picture is of synthetically- dyed
hemp half-stuff, displayed in bright orange and light green.
Each sheet is calendared in a flatbed press to
make a very smooth surface for writing and printing.
The second picture is also hemp half-stuff, but this batch
was undyed (naturally off-white) with solid mica inclusions
(the place that looks like a hole is actually a big piece of mica.)
The mica was collected in Swannanoa, NC
and crushed using a mortar and pestle.
The third picture is also of hemp half-stuff, but this
paper is pigmented with grey clay
from Swannanoa, NC. I filtered the pigment
out of the mud and added it to the pre-beaten pulp,
along with retention aid to lock in the tones.
The fourth picture is of another batch
of hemp half-stuff dyed with red clay mud pigments
and also has inclusions of crushed mica.

Daylily Paper
This batch of paper contains hemp half-stuff
and daylily leaves and stems. I created
the colors using yellow and green synthetic
dyes mixed in with the hemp, then I added systematically
added different percentages of the pre-cooked daylilies
to the hemp to create several different shades
of yellow and green papers.
The second and third pictures are of one of the
envelopes with hand-decorated note paper that
I made out of the daylily paper.
