Custom Books

These books are some of my most special art because
each of these books have been created for
other people for special occasions.

Custom Travel Journal
This journal was created especially for a friend
of mine for his first trip to Ireland.
The first picture is the front cover of the book which
has green and gold marbled detailing to symbolize Ireland.
The second picture is of the book standing up, partially open.
The third picture is of the inside of the front cover
which has pressed clovers and maps glued into it as
well as a small pocket to hold found treasures along the journey.
The fourth picture is of the back cover that also
has a storage pocket and clovers and maps.
The fifth picture is a top view of the book
standing up to show the basic structure of the book.
I used green and gold accents wherever possible in the
contruction of this book. The pages of the book are also cut
into designs on the edges and each page is big
enough to fit a 3x5 photograph.

Guestbook
This book was created on a commission for
the Warren Wilson Store in Asheville, NC.
They wanted a book that reflected the connection between
the store and Warren Wilson College, so I used forest green
paper for the cover because Warren Wilson is a very environmental
school. I also used some of my handmade paper, that was
dyed with red clay mud from the college campus, for
the end papers and to cover the spines of the signature pages.
They also wanted a book that would lie flat when
it was open so I used an open binding stitch
(commonly used for coptic bindings) but
I did not stitch around the covers because they wanted
a smooth professional look to the cover. The covers are
glued to the end papers instead.
The bulk of the pages are 8.5x14" soft yellow paper
with computer generated lines printed on them
to make signing the book easier.
The first two pictures are of the book standing
on the counter at the store.
The third picture is a close-up shot of the detail on
the first page of the book.

Fairy Star Book
This book was created for a friend who needed a little
dose of some magic to get her inspired. The basic structure
of the book is known as a star book, because when
it is fully open it looks like a star. This particular
book is made with designer papers, fringed ribbons,
small red feathers and individual peacock feathers.
I created this book with magic in mind and it has
a short rhyming story inside along with tiny pictures
of faries that I illustrated with Prismacolor markers.
When it is closed, the book covers measure 3x3" and
the text block is approximately 1/2", and it
creates an approx. 6" star when the book is fully open.
The first picture is of the book fully open to look like a star.
The second picture is a close-up shot of the detail work inside the book.
The third picture is a close-up of the spine and covers
of the book to show how the peacock feathers are attached.

Wedding Guest Book
Pruitt-Howe Wedding

This guest book was created especially for a friend of mine for her wedding.
The text pages were specially selected for their high quality and durability.
The cover has special detailing. There is a leaf from the tree that the bride's father
is buried under attached to the cover behind a 5x7" sheet of mica, which is attached
to the cover with brass fasteners, and sealed on the back with transparency film.
The book also has special pages that fold out to hold a total of eight 4x6" photos.
The fore-edge of all the pages are gold-tipped using a permanent gold paint marker.
There is also gold detailing around the inside of the front cover (see photos 2 and 3).
The book measures approximately 9x9" and is approximately 1.5" thick.
The book was given as the wedding present to the couple.
