Getting to Know the Web

1. What is an ISP? Give 3 existing examples.

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider, a company that provides access to the internet. For a monthly fee, the service provider gives you a software package, username, password and access phone number. Three examples are AOL, MSN, and Roadrunner.

2. What are 3 different ways a computer can connect itself to the Internet?

Three different ways to connect are through a phone line, A DSL connection, and also a LAN connection.

 

3. Which is the fastest and which is the slowest of the three in your answer to number 2.

The slowest connection would be through the phone line, and the fastest would be DSL.

4. What is a baud rate?

It is the number of signaling elements that can occur each second. In more understandable terms, how fast a document (or anything) can be downloaded.

5. What unit of measurement is associated with a baud rate?

A bit is associated with a baud rate. For example, 200 baud rate means 200 bits can be transferred per second.

6. If you have a 56K modem, what is the quickest time a 1 megabyte file can be transferred?

The quickest time would be 2.38 minutes because they normally run around 7K a second.

7. Define what a web page is.

A web page is a document on the world wide web. Every Web page is identified by a unique URL.

8. What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web is a system of Internet servers that support specially formatted in a markup language called HTML.

9. What is a browser? Give 3 examples of browsers that exist.

A browser is a software application used to locate and display Web pages. Three examples are Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, and AOL.

10. What are some programs on the computer here at Jefferson (e-Macs) that allow you to create a web page besides Dreamweaver? (You must find at least 3 programs that do)

Three programs that JHS students could use would be Text Edit, Word, and Flash.

11. What is the difference between HTMLand XHTML?

HTML is the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web and XHTML is a hybrid between HTML and XML specifically designe for Net device displays.

12. How many files would you need in your homepage folder if you had a webpage that had some text, three pictures and a movie clip all showing all in one page.

You would need 5 files.
