Rowing is the first modern sport of the world. Oared vessels began to be used for transport, commerce, fishing, life-saving and war, but, while there are occasional references in classical texts to boat racing, rowing primarily for exercise, non-ceremonial recreation or competition was not common before 1800. It's a popular sport.

Julee Varghese is currently the numero uno in women's rowing in India. In the last seven years she is in the forefront of the rowing scene in the subcontinent. She has gone a long way from the 1997 National Championships held at Chandigarh. She bagged several dozens of medals during the last seven years. She reached a new high by participating in the FISA Olympic Continental Qualification Regatta for Asia at Shanghai, China. She singly carried the dreams of the millions of women in India at Shanghai but missed the mark even after performing the national best of 08:29.39 for the 2000m Light Weight Women's Single Scull. Since 2002,she is representing India and hence is missing the National events.

Julee hails from a small and beautiful village, Pulinkunnu of Kuttanadu. Kuttanadu is one of the finest scenic locations of the world. It lies under the sea level.

Julee had her schooling at the Amalolbhava Lower Primary School and Little Flower High School in Pulinkunnu. She started rowing after her schooling when she was selected by the Sports Authority of India Water Sports Centre, Alappuzha.

Julee had her Pre Degree and Degree studies at the St. Joseph's Women's College, Alappuzha of the University of Kerala. She is married to Jojo Thomas of Paruthiyil Kattady of Kumarankary. They have two children Joel Thomas and Theresa Maria. Julee is currently employed with the Department of Taxes, Government of Kerala. India.
