Bethel Christian | 10 | 13 | 11 | 15 | 49 |
Hesperia Christian took on Bethel Christian tonight and solidly beat them 69-49 in Hesperia. The Patriots were led by their tandem guards, Billy Hague and Zach Howard with 18 points and 15 points respectively. Hague also had 7 rebounds and 6 steals, temporarily making him the leader in Socal in steals with 104 on the year.
Aside from Hague and Howard's performance and the outstanding play by Jordan Vargas who got 10 points, HCS was off tonight. Of course good teams find ways to win on bad nights anbd HCS did that this night. The Patriot free throw shooting was the worse it has been since the New Roads game at 58%. Turnover to assist ratio returned to negative numbers. Mike Petersen and Mike Maerzluft seemed off this evening. Petersen only shot 50% from the free throw line and Maerzluft had a terrible night from the charity line as well shooting 1/3.Maerzluft went 4/7 under the basket while Petersen went 2/5. Both shot off-balance most of the night underneath. Jonny Barton (other than his four blocked shots) and Jordan Martinson were lackluster in rebounding and in their shooting. Martinson got three steals but made 4 turnovers, a rarity for him. Josh Ellis had three bad turnovers in just a short period of play. Khyl Pearson missed two free throws which should not have occurred. The team as a whole got 33 rebounds in a game against a team where they should have had at least 40 rebounds.
Simply put, if you are going to be the number one team in Div VAA, you have to play like it every night. At this late part of the season, the team should be ramping up not playing mediocre basketball. HCS is now 7-0 in Agape play and 16-6 overall. They next play at Joshua Springs on Friday against a Lightening squad bent on revenge.
HCS has not lost to Bethel Christian in anyone's memory. They beat the Eagles earlier this season in their first meeting 45-35. Bethel Christian averages 62 PPG and has been holding opponents to 56 PPG while HCS is averaging 58 PPG and holding opponents to just 49 PPG. Bethel Christian has never won a game in Hesperia.
HCS is going to have to test Bethel Christian's big men and take it inside because of HCS' height advantage. Tonight HCS has to stop both Eagles' stars, Mark Hicks and Josh Thies. Last game they stopped Thies who got only 4 points but let Hicks get 13 points. HCS will again have to show their defensive skills as they did last time against the Eagles. The Patriot guards will have to ensure that Thies does not get any easy baskets off of cherry picking. HCS must stop any passes from going to the Eagles big men inside. Again they must demonstrate the ability to outrebound an opponent. And others besides Mike Petersen must get those boards. Mike Maerzluft, Jonny Barton and Jordan Martinson each need to get about 8 rebounds a piece. And as always, Bethel will have to foul HCS and the Patriots (especially those under 70%) better be ready to make free throws. Free throw shooting could determine this game as it did the last time around. Last time it was four critical free throws made by Billy Hague in the final minute or so that iced that game.
