Just as the 3rd horse was loaded in the gate, a storm burst into
Prospect Downs, erupting the amazed silence as the 6 dazzling Thoroughbreds
waited anxiously to be loaded into the worn gates. Quicksilver loaded
easily, as did Flash Of Lightning and Mini-Me. By the time the fourth horse,
Flying High, was being loaded, bolts of lightning were streaking the
afternoon sky. She bolted from the handlers, nearly unseating the
in-experienced jockey. The attendants got the filly in, and the rest of the
field was quickly loaded, except for Mushroom, who had minor bucking
problems. When they finally took off, Mini-Me, as the only front runner,
easily captured a small lead. Mushroom waited near the back of the pack,
even with Lady Raider, who was in 5th place's, flank. Flash Of Lightning
held 4th place throughout most of the race, except for when she achieved 3rd
for a spilt second. Flying High and Quicksilver we're left to jostle for
2nd, although it was not much of a competition because Quicksilver had a
severe dislike for the sloppy track. He barely managed to thrust his nose in
front of Flying High for a few seconds of glory before slipping back to 5th.
Mini-Me, after running through the mud and at a fast pace, began to tire,
leaving
Flying High in a momentary 1st before Lady Raider began her amazing comeback
and sped past the whole field to cross in front. As  she sped under the
wire, she was still steadily drawing away. Mushroom had also followed Lady
Raider's example and given a final rally to push himself up to 2nd. At the
sight of gaining horses, the tiring Mini-Me's jockey quickly whipped him
back to attention so he could maintain third. Flying High never seemed to
take off, as she ran at a steady pace, which brought her in at a 4th. Flash
Of Lightning seemed to have been stunned by the roaring thunder and
periodically blinking lightning, because she never kicked in to really run
the race, the only thing that saved her form a disappointing last was the
fact that Quicksilver couldn't handle mud.
