The story of Charmed opens in San Francisco, in an old Victorian style home where Prue and Piper Halliwell live. As children, the Halliwell's mother died and their father left them, following this. So, their grandmother took care of them and raised them in that house. The 3 sisters left home but Piper and Prue moved back to the old house when their grandmother was taken ill. Phoebe, the third sister moved out to New York to try her luck in "The Big Apple". While visiting her grandmother in the hospital, Piper meets Jeremy, a young, attractive man she begins to start dating. Following their grandmother's death, Phoebe returns into the other two's lives again, when she tells Piper she's moving back in to "share the house that Grams had left them". But Phoebe had originally separated from the group due to an affair she had with Prue's boyfriend, and she and Prue never finished fighting about it. So, naturally, Prue's not too thrilled when she sees Phoebe with her luggage on their front door step. So, Phoebe claims her old room and moves back in, making it the first time all three of them had been in the house since their grandmother had died. One night, while a huge storm blows on outside, Phoebe wants to explore the house, since it brought back so many memories. After the power blows out, she learns that the attic is locked and that Prue and Piper cannot find anyway into it. So Phoebe goes up to investigate with Piper in check while Prue goes to try and turn the lights back on. While searching around in the attic, Phoebe comes across her grandmother's old chest. Inside with a few things is a large book entitled "The Book of Shadows". Prue and Piper leave to go to bed while Phoebe stays awake in the attic and reads the book. The next morning Prue and Piper take off for work while Phoebe sleeps in. While at work, Prue is fired by her boss, and ex-boyfriend Roger, whom is very jealous of Prue and her success. She then heads to "Quake", a local restaurant where Piper is applying for a job. Piper cooks up a great dish for the chef, but doesn’t have time to add her secret ingredient, a little dab of wine. Flustered as the chef is about the taste the dish, she panics and raised her arms to stop him. And she stops him all right, in fact, she freezes him completely. Not knowing what happened and what is going on she adds the wine quickly to the dish and the chef, a minute later becoming unfrozen, tastes it and loves it, giving the job to Piper. While this is going on, Phoebe has a premonition, or a vision of what she perceived as the future. She then realizes that the incantation has worked, and she has magical powers. She rushed to Quake, where she meets up with Prue. They sit at the bar and Phoebe explains that the three of them are now witches, thanks to an incantation she read out of the Book of Shadows, the night before. The Book said that they have descended from a very long line of Witches, and not just any witches, but very powerful witches. The text goes on to say that in the Halliwell line, if three sisters are born, then they will posses the strongest of these powers, and become the most powerful witches in the world. These powers they are given (once the incantation is read) are to be used to protect the innocent and stop those who would abuse the powers of magic and evil beings. Prue does not believe this, until Phoebe pisses her off enough that she (Prue) moves an ashtray with her mind. Phoebe then explains that the three powers have been divided up among the sisters, each having a particular talent. Phoebe became psychic, she has premonitions or visions of the future. Prue has the power of telekinesis, of the ability to move objects with her mind. And Piper has the power to freeze time. Astonished at this, the sisters meet together to discuss their new fate. But, an evil warlock that hunts and kills local witches is on the trail of the three lovely sisters. Andy Trudeau, Prue's ex-boyfriend, is now a local cop and is on the trail of the "witch hunter". Jeremy shows up to take Piper to a special place, where he intends to kill Piper and steal her power. But Piper freezes him and returns home to warn Prue and Phoebe about Jeremy. Jeremy arrives shortly thereafter, and is destroyed by "the power of three", the combined powers of the sisters that is apparently no match for evil. Before he is unmade, he warns the Halliwell's that there are many other Warlocks out there that will be coming for their powers. The next morning as the sisters are discussing what they shall now do, Andy shows up to talk to Prue and ask her out again. She says she'll think about it since she "has a lot in her life right now", learning she is a witch and all. So, that is where our story continues, of the fight of the Charmed Ones, as they protect the innocent and themselves, from all that is evil in the world.
