A Love For Yemei by Magan Le

  • Prologue

Y TO THE IZZO! UPDATE! The air was damp, and it was becoming extremely difficult to breathe. The only light was dim, coming from an unknown direction and source. Even with that amount of lighting, it was hard to see anything or make out objects from a distance. I walked along to nowhere as the murky land beneath me squished with every step. There were no shoes on my feet so I could feel the mud slide between my toes. I felt naked, though I had on a thin shirt and long shorts that frayed at the ends. My hair was short - cut to the skin, and my nails were becoming brittle from being bitten too much. I was dirty. I continued to walk in the eerie, deadly silence with the ocassional sloppy sound my feet were making against the ground. I knew I was not going anywhere, but my legs insisted on moving. It was an irritable thing - to do something other than desired. The cold, frozen lips on my face slightly opened and let out a gentle breeze. I kept on asking myself, "Where am I headed?" My eyes stared only ahead and dared not look around. Suddenly, my eyelids began to drop. It felt like I was dreaming. Was I? My feet no longer moved. I was still. I was drowning. When I looked up, there was only darkness. I wanted to cry, but I couldn't. I didnt't understand anything that was happening to me and could only grasp the reality of my own downfall. Then a voice could be heard.
"I'm right in front of you." It was the voice of an angel. "I'm here for you." She extended her hand into the pool of darkness. It took me awhile to feel around and find her hand. It felt like dying, and I was becoming breathless. Finally, I could sense her warm touch as I firmly latched onto her grip. She lifted me out, and it was then that I could see her wonderfully simple blue dress. As my face passed hers, she whispered gently into my ears. "I've always been here for you. . .if only you cared to look." My lips parted to say something, but there was nothing to say. Instead, I opened my eyes.

  • Week One

Yemei woke up after napping for five hours on her window seat. She loved smelling the summer leaves as the wind captured their scent in a whirlwind of dust and cinnamon. Mmm. Summer break is finally here, but what to do? I have no life. I'm just boring ol' Yemei.
Yemei was startled by a hard knock on her door. "Oiyo, Yemei! Open the door!!". It was Rayne, her best friend since forever. "OK, I dun care if you're naked or not, I'm comin' in and rememba, you were warned!". The door flew open and Rayne gasped. "Oh my gosh, you're still naked!!!". Yemei threw a pillow at her.
"It's not funny, anymore, Rayne. That was two years ago." Hahahahaha. Rayne laughed light-heartedly and tossed a pillow back at Yemei.
"C'mon, Yem Yem!! Come see the new neighbors." Do I have to?
"Alrighty." Rayne dragged Yemei off her window seat and almost made Yemei fall as Rayne raced down the stairs. She always does this.
"Hurry!" Can't you see that I'm trying?? They both stumbled out the front door and into the hot day bathed in bright sunshine. Rayne led her through a poorly lit alleyway ruled by Rayne's cousin. They rounded two corners and finally stopped in front of a run-down house on the brink of collapse. There was a faint gleam in Rayne's eyes. She giggled and thrust open the door. "My room. Hurry, hurry!" Why? After they both set foot in her room, she slammed her door. Then, she unfolded her closet door and rummaged around in her clutter box. Rayne revealed new, shiny binoculars. "Lookie." She handed it over to Yemei and pointed our her window. This is ridiculous. I can see them from here without the binoculars.
"I can already see them, Rayne."
"Okay." Rayne grabbed the binoculars and tossed it carelessly across her room. It hit the door and landed with a hard thud on the linoleum floor. "Look closer." Both leaned their heads in.
"Keep quiet up there," yelled Rayne's mother.
"Oooooo k." Perfect unity. Outside were two guys playing basketball and a little girl patching the cracks on their driveway with mud. "See the tall one with them long azz spikes?"
               "Uh hm."
"He's on fiya, righ!?" Gag. "He's the one I want. I have a plan that I've been thinking up ever since they moved in two days ago." Yemei nodded in reply. "Imma get close to their sister. She looks cool cool. Should be no problemo. I figure if I hang out with her long enough, he'll notice me. If not, imma use her as bait as I dangle her ova the bridge." Yemei gasped. "Hahah. You know I'm just playin' around, Yemei." She gave Yemei that carefree look of hers as her mouth widened to reveal clean, white teeth. How can they be so white? Yemei licked her own teeth then returned Rayne's smile with a closed one.

The next day, Yemei woke up early and met Rayne at Calm Cafe as planned. She was not a morning person and groaned during her walk. Rayne was surprisingly energetic. They both ordered hot chocolate and waffles as they discussed the day to come. "After you left, I had nothing to do." Because I thought you had wanted me to since they went back inside.
"Oh." Yemei drenched her waffles in syrup and stared in horror as Rayne put slabs and slabs of butter on hers. "Rayne...that's so disgusting." Rayne giggled and started to chow down. Yemei shrugged and started eating hers, too.
"So I was thinkin'..." Rayne was interrupted by the bell of the door. Her eyes widened as she pointed behind Yemei. What? Yemei turned around and saw the little girl accompanied by her two brothers. Gulp. "Oh no," whispered Rayne. She saw them pass their booth and take the one directly behind her. "Yemmmmmmmm!!" There was a panic in Rayne's eyes. She pleaded with Yemei to switch sides. Oh alright. Yemei silently got up, and Rayne took this as an OK to switch. Now, from Rayne's new position, she could see the little girl's face and the guys' backs. She breathed a sigh of relief. "You're a life saver." Your life...
"You're very welcome." Yemei revealed a genuine smile. Anything for a friend. "Hey, look. We're done with our waffles, already. I didn't even notice...did you?"
"No, I dint eitha." Rayne smiled at the little girl.
. "What are you doing? Are you being silly, again? Are you initiating your plan?" Right now??? Rayne nodded and waved at the girl.
"She's so kyoote. Look, quick." Yemei slowly turned her head.
The little girl looked at her brothers and pointed behind their heads. "You so cute, Sakura. What is it?" the tall one whispered. The shorter one turned his head. For a moment, he couldn't believe what was in front of his eyes. A pair of the most beautiful brown eyes he had ever seen were only a few inches away from his face. He blushed and quickly turned away. Yemei tried to hide her smile as she turned her head.
Rayne spoke. "Did ya see her? Imma go and help her patch up the cracks later today." She was completely oblivious to what had just happened.
"What wuz Sakura pointing at, Tha?" asked the tall one.
Tha lied. "It was nothing." He wanted to look back again. He felt that if he didn't shoo away his fears and sum up his courage that moment, he would lose any chance of ever seeing her again. "I'm such a coward," he whispered under his breath. He stayed right where he was.
That guy is really cute. Why doesn't Rayne see it? Hmm. Then again, the tall one does seem more her type. I wonder what his name is. What IS his name? Ah. Rayne needs to move fast, now. I just want to know his name. "YEMEI!!!! ARE YOU EVEN PAYING ATTENTION TO ME!?" Yemei was startled.
"Wha.....I'm really sorry." Rayne continued talking to her as if nothing had happened.
"Her name is Yemei?"..Tha thought to himself. "What an awkward, yet beautiful, name." He smiled. All of a sudden, there was a snap in front of him. "Gui!" He snatched Gui's hand and thrust it aside.
               "Daydreamin', Tha?"
Tha lied. "No. That's stupid. Why would I daydream? I save all that for school..." He started to laugh nervously.
"Boi, you ain't funny. Nice try, though." Gui gave a hearty laugh. At this, Rayne nearly swooned.
"His laugh! Oh mah gosh...his laugh. Iss all too real. We have ta get outta hea befo I faint or give mahself away." Rayne grabbed Yemei's hand and once again dragged her out the door.
"Hey! They didn't pay their bill!" screeched the waitress.
"No problem." Tha handed the lady a ten. "That should cover it, right?" She nodded and didn't return change.
"That's what you get for bein' so durn nice, Tha. You gonna be so poor, and I can't always be there to lend ya money." He chuckled and lightly slapped Tha on the back. "Let's go home, now, sibz." Gui, Tha, and Sakura filed neatly out the door.
"Rayne, I'm getting a headache. You'll have to scout without me, today. I feel like I need to barf...ugh."
"Them waffles musta been bad. Well, ok. Take care of urself." They waved goodbye as Rayne stepped into her house. Yemei started walking home. Man, I really need a car. Too bad I can't drive, yet. Hmm. That guy...I don't know him...and yet, I feel like I've known him for more than my whole life. It's crazy, absolutely crazy.

Monday all the way through Thursday was a blur. Yemei hadn't been going to Rayne's place and Rayne hadn't come to see her. Yemei thought that perhaps, Rayne was too busy with her plan or maybe her plan worked and so she was spending all her time with Gui, instead. Yemei wasn't sure, but Rayne finally arrived on her doorstep on Friday. "What's up!?" I think I should be asking YOU that.
"Oh, just the usual boring stuff." Yemei gave a weak smile.
"Less go!" Rayne tugged on her hand. "C'mon, we gotsta initiate plan B."
