The earliest remains of peanuts were found in Peru and were dated at almost 6000 BC. Native tribes such as the Incas cultivated peanuts for food long before the Spanish arrived in the New World. European explorers then transported peanuts back to Europe where it spread to Africa and Asia. Peanuts became popular in the US during the slave trade and were once regarded as poor people's food. Peanuts soon became more popular as new products such as peanut butter were invented.

The most important peanut growing countries are America, China, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria. These countries sell peanuts to all other nations world-wide.
