About Shireoaks on Stage and the Writer/Director

The History

Shireoaks has been putting on Pantomimes for many years, but 'Shireoaks on Stage' in its current format first came in to being in 2001 when Jonathan Fitzgerald took up the role of writing and directing Pantos for the village. The Group, supported by St. Luke's School and Church, is now growing.

Message from The Guv'nor

Hi! Thanks for your interest in what we do. The first thing I can promise to anyone taking part in or coming to see one of our shows is that it will be a unique one. I never use old scripts - I always write my own shows from scratch. They are always based on traditional Pantomime stories and characters, but are updated with new twists to them and new characters.

A bit about me then - I moved to Gateford in the year 2000 after graduating from University with an English degree. My partner is a teacher at St. Luke's and I am also Editor of the Shireoaks Newsletter.

I was first asked to write and direct by Mrs. Bennett at the school in September 2001 and 6 months later, I had great new friends and a great show for us all to be proud of.

I also Co-Directed and took a small part in the Lindrick Players Production of The Sound of Music, performed in October 2002.

SOS: The Main Aim

My main aim behind the Pantos is to bring the community together. We also strive to put on an excellent, professional performance, but I see it is an added bonus if this happens. And indeed so far this has been the case, last year regarded as the best show in recent memory and raising more money than ever. Primarily though, I hope to continue bringing the people of Shireoaks together.

Who can get involved?

I am not necessarily searching for experienced actors - though we do have some wonderful ones! The main reason the productions have worked so well is due to the parts played by ordinary families from the village, attending to have some fun! This breeds success! I welcome any residents, or those with any connections to the local community, to come along and take part. We also encourage links with other local dramatic groups. A wide and very varied number of roles are always available, both on and offstage, ranging from leading lady to chorus member, backstage help to publicity, and plenty more!

To get in touch, email me at the address on the homepage.

Together, we can keep putting a Panto-smile on the face of local people!
