RANKING OF CLASS “A”

(1) Elmira Southside (2)Vestal (3) Chenango Forks (4) Elmira Free Academy (5) Susquehanna Valley

SUMMARIES

Elmira Southside, Enrollment:  934, League:  STAC, Coach:  Ben Cardamone, Last Sectional Championship-2005

Oct 1: The 2006 Green Hornets have dealt with some serious setbacks. Having lost 6 of their returning 9 athletes it looked as though the season was just going to be about individual qualifiers for the state meet. The addition of Hayley Merritt, Rebecca Judson, and Sarah Ripley has rejuvenated the Southside girls. They are not a deep team but when they are on they can run with some of the top teams in the section. Most recent performance was a 4th place of 31 teams in their race at the Warwick Valley Purple Wave Invitational. Rachel Forrest (12), Stephanie Bristow (11), Bethany Coons (10) and possibly Sara Colon (8) will make up the rest of the roster for the Green Hornets.

Oct 15: The class A girl’s race looks like a dog race that will go right down to the wire. The key factor for the Green Hornets will be to stay healthy. Most recent race was STAC championships were Southside beat the other Class teams. They were led by ALL CONFERENCE runners Bethany Coons, Stephanie Bristow and Sara Colon.

Oct 29: The key all season for the Green Hornets was to stay healthy. The Green Hornets have been running without senior Rachel Forrest for the past 2 meets because of an inflamed Achilles tendon. If Rachel returns it will be a tight race for the team title.

Nov 12: As predicted an unbelievably tight race, with the Green Hornets squeaking out a 1 point victory over Vestal to win its 5 consecutive SECTION 4 title and 6th in past 7 years. The trio of Sara Colon, Stephanie Bristow and Bethany Coons ran in a tight pack just ahead of a contingent of 6 Vestal runners. Rachel Forrest gutted through the race to be Southside’s 4th girl and Rebecca Judson rounded out the scoring for the Green Hornets. Sara Ripley ran her best race of the season and Hayley Merritt was the Green Hornets 7th girl. The girls ran at the state meet and finished 7th overall in Class A, a wonderful job and a fantastic season.

Nov 12: Vestal, Enrollment:  1020, League:  STAC, Coach:  Gary Fancher, Last Sectional Championship-1988

Oct 1: The Vestal girls are loaded with talent. They are also a relatively young team. It should be a constant battle between them and SHS.

Oct 15: The class A girl’s race looks like a dog race that will go right down to the wire. The pack attack continues. This team continues to improve. At the Stocke Conwicke Invitational they were the best of the Class A schools. There seems to be an emerging front runner now in Erika Gates followed very closely by Alyssa Mushalla and Mary Katherin Kulp. (ALL are ALL CONFERENCE) along with teammate Jessica Spellane. If someone gets hurt the Golden Bears are still players, they seem to have an endless supply of athletes.

Oct 29: Rested Marathon Invite weekend. Raced at Newark Valley and had a dominating performance beat Southside handily by 29 points. Led by Erika Gates, the Golden Bears are poised to win their 1st Sectional title since 1988.

Nov 12: As predicted, a fantastic race, which Vestal came up 1 point short. Vestal ran with a dominating pack led by Erika Gates who could not break up the Green Hornets top 3 runners. The runner that almost came up huge for the Golden Bears was the #7 girl who was trying to track down Southside’s #5. If she had caught the Southside runner Vestal would have won in a tiebreaker. An epic battle none the less that the Vestal kids should be proud of and remember they will be stronger in 2007.

Chenango Forks, Enrollment:  474, League:  STAC, Coach:  Andy Gronski

Oct 1: Chenango Forks has some top quality runners. Led by Michele Staiger Forks definitely has the potential to become a contender for a section 4 title. A lot will depend on the development of their 4th and 5th girls. Definitely not a team to take lightly.

Oct 15: The class A girl’s race looks like a dog race that will go right down to the wire. Although Forks has not beaten Southside or Vestal they have the potential to be players at the state qualifier meet. Smaller race mistakes by Southside or Vestal at this point could directly help Forks chances. They are led by 2 ALL CONFERENCE runners Michelle Staiger and Raychel Shannon.

Oct 29: Although the battle for the Section 4 title looks like a 2 team race you can not count Forks out of the race. They have 3 strong girls and if they have a good day of racing by the rest of the team, they could surprise everyone. If nothing else the top 3 girls will have a major impact on team scoring and will be the difference on which team ultimately brings home a section title?

Nov 12: Great performance at the State qualifier meet with Michelle Staiger qualifying as an individual. Some late season injuries slowed this team down but in 2007 this could be the team to beat.

Elmira Free Academy Enrollment: 757, League:  STAC, Coach:  Andy Hughes, Last Sectional Championship-2001

Oct 1: Led by Marlyn Moore who qualified for state last year, this is another team that has many new faces. It will take some time to get their feet under them but coach Hughes is very motivated and it is only a matter of time before they are in the thick of it.

Oct 15: A young team on the rise. They are led by Marlyn Moore and the much improving Kali Dayton. This team is probably a year away from being a contender

Oct 29: Marlyn Moore is EFA’s best prospect for an individual state qualifier. The Blue Devils have some young talent that needs time to develop. Under Coach Hugh’s guidance it is only a matter of time before the Blue Devils are running with the best in the section.

Nov 12: Marlyn Moore paced the Blue devils. They will be looking for some young runners to rebuild this team. There is a lot of potential there it will be up to Coach Hughes to drag it out of them in 2007

Susquehanna Valley, Enrollment:  525, League:  STAC, Coach:  Mike Kent, Last Sectional Championship-1996

Oct 1: This team is led by Sydney Williams who is a newcomer to Cross Country.  So far her performances in the JV races have been outstanding. If SV does not have a complete team they have little to worry about Sydney will rank among the top runners in Class A this year with a strong shot of winning a section 4 title.

Oct 15: Sydney Williams (ALL CONFERENCE) and Maura Chapman round out this incomplete team. A program in the rebuilding process but Williams sure looks like the girl to beat in the Class A race!

Oct 29: Sydney Williams will be the 2006 Class A individual champion! The only thing keeping this from happening would be illness or injury. She has been at least 20-30 seconds ahead of the next Class A girl in every race. Like EFA this team has some young talent that just needs to be developed, next year look for this team to come on much like Johnson City in Class B.

Nov 12: Sydney Williams was by far the Class of Class A girls. Not only did she win the Section but she followed up with a 12th place finish at the state meet. If SV finds a couple more girls they will be an outstanding team. Their modified team definitely had some familiar names. 2007 might be even better!

RANKING OF CLASS “B”

((1) Johnson City (2) Maine-Endwell (3) Owego (4) Chenango Valley (5) Oneonta (6) Southern Springs (8)Tie: Norwich Inc, Windsor Inc

SUMMARIES

Oct 1: Ranking 4th

Oct 15: 4th- A couple of strong performances at STAC’s makes CV 4th

Oct 29: CV is building a strong program for girls. Kristen Kilmer and Mari Giurastante are contenders for individual births to the States Thursday.

Nov 12: CV ended strong, sending one girl to States and one alternate in a very competitive Class B Sectional Race.

Johnson City, Enrollment:  650, League:  STAC, Coach:  Pete Tylenda, Last Sectional Championship-1992

Oct 1: Ranking 1st – JC has not beaten M-E since 2003, but they look very strong this year.

Oct 15: 1st- JC won the overall STAC Title and is the first Section IV B Team to beat M-E since 2003

Oct 29: JC is still the favorite for the B Crown, but it will be close with Maine-Endwell. Paige Mullins is the Section’s top runner this season.

Nov 12: JC girls had the races of their lives at Sectionals defeating a strong M-E team. They were 4th at States and would have been better but Lauren Mullins was unfortunately ill the day of the race. She ran anyway, when many others would have quit. Rachel Fox is the only senior, but she will be a big loss.

Maine-Endwell, Enrollment:  627, League:  STAC, Coach:  Mike Cordi, Last Sectional Championship-2005

Oct 1: Ranking 2nd – M-E has not lost to a Section IV team since 2003, they return their whole team this year the race between them and JC is way too close to call.

Oct 15: 2nd- M-E suffered their first loss to a Section IV B Team Saturday

Oct 29: M-E is coming on strong. Megan Jacoby, Danielle Brenon, and Marie Ferro could all go to States if the Spartans lose. Megan Cordi is in a group of 5 contending for the last spot. But the team race is way too close to call between M-E and JC.

Nov 12: M-E’s girls had their school’s best team ever and still lost to JC, earning a #8 State Ranking. M-E loses no one for next year and will be looking to win their Sectional Championship back.

Oct 1: Ranking 5th

Oct 15: Was the 5th B Team at STAC’s

Oct 29: Oneonta is looking to finish in the Middle of the pack Thursday. Coach Forbes always has his runners ready and could have an individual go to States.

Nov 12: Coach Forbes is bringing Oneonta, they could be a threat next year.

Owego Free Academy, Enrollment:  603, League:  STAC, Coach:  John Heath, Last Sectional Championship-1991

Oct 1: Ranking 3rd

Oct 15: 3rd B Team at STAC’s, Owego looks better every week.

Oct 29: Owego is the 3rd best team in the Section and Sandi Kastner could be the 5th individual to go to the States.

Nov 12: Owego’s girls finished strong and should shake the Section up next year.

Southern Springs, 531, League:  IAC, Coach:  Bill Mullarney, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Oct 1: Ranking 6th

Oct 15: Southern Tier B Teams have yet to see Southern Springs. Katherine Miller is running well.

Oct 29: Katherine Miller is looking like she’ll go to States if she runs as well has she has been.

Nov 12: Southern Springs loses Katherine Miller who represented them in States this year.

RANKING OF CLASS “C”

(1) Newark Valley (2) Trumansburg (3) Unatego (4) Waverly (5) Lansing (6) Walton/Downsville (6) Tioga (6) Watkins Glen

SUMMARIES

Lansing, Enrollment:  354, League:  IAC, Coach:  Darrell Hill, Last Sectional Championship “?”

Oct 1:  It looks like Lansing is in a rebuilding year.  With the absence of Kylee Jordan, the Bobcats may see their first year in many without a girl qualifier to the state meet.  Newcomers Heather Hummel and Lisa Petry lead the team at the Elmira Invitational.  Lansing as run complete a few times adding to the mix of unknown quantities in class “C”.

Oct 15:  Lansing continues to improve as a team.  They were 3rd at the T-Burg invitational

Oct 29:  Lansing ran incomplete at the IAC Championships but have the girls to run complete at Sectionals.  Currently tied for 4th due to INC running.

Nov 12: Lansing ends up 5th in the class “C” rankings.  With lots of young kids their future looks bright.

Newark Valley, Enrollment:  358, League:  IAC, Coach:  Eric D'Arcy, Last Sectional Championship-2005

Oct 1: The returning champion and obvious choice as #1 in Class C.  Newark Valley is lead by Erin Cawley, who is running very well this season.   The NV strength really lies in their core of #2-7 runners which is a strong pack.  Jessica Johnson (4th in section last year), Kelley Cawley (9th last year), Emily Gac, Katie Weeks, Erica Mosher, and usually # 7 is Lisa Serbaniewicz  This team not currently ranked in the NYS rankings, but they should be after their performance at the Warwick Wave Invitational.

Oct 15:  The returning champion and obvious choice as #1 in Class C.  Newark Valley is lead by Erin Cawley, who is running very well this season.   The NV strength really lies in their core of #2-7 runners which is a strong pack.  Jessica Johnson (4th in section last year), Kelley Cawley (9th last year), Emily Gac, Katie Weeks, Erica Mosher, and usually # 7 is Lisa Serbaniewicz  Newark Valley is now the only section IV girl’s team ranked in Class C.

Oct 29: Newark Valley continues to dominate and should prevail as Sectional Champs easily.  The are improving at the right time and hope to represent our section well at the state meet.

Nov 12: Class Champions for two years in a row and all of them are back next year!  The are certainly the pre-season favorites for the 2007 season.

Tioga, Enrollment:  291, League:  IAC, Coach:  Stuart Rogers, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Oct 1:  Not much new to report about Tioga.  They seem to be racing at mostly dual meets and waiting until the middle and end of the season to show their strength.  Tioga’s move up to Class “C” this year could actually help, as Class “D” is now loaded with tons of individual and team strength.  Senior Melissa Haahr is running strong; placing in the first ten in league meets.  Watch for Melissa and the Tioga team to come on strong toward the end of October.

Oct 15: Tioga drops in the rankings due to some weaker than expected team results.

Oct 29: Melissa Haahr is on the bubble to qualify for the state meet.  Tioga ran incomplete at the IAC championships but could field a middle of the pack team at Sectionals if everyone is healthy and runs.  Currently tied for 4th due to INC running.

Nov 12: Melissa Haahr ended out her xc career with a trip to the state meet.  Tioga was incomplete at Sectionals.

Trumansburg, Enrollment:  363, League:  IAC, Coach:  Bryce DeSantis, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Oct 1:  Trumansburg was 3rd last year at Class “C” sectionals but the loss of #1 runner Andrea Berg and a host of other varsity scorers hurt the team.  Tiffany Borden (10th at Sectionals) returns to give the Raiders some experience as does Ashley Smith (13th at Sectionals) but Smith has been out with an injury and her return is questionable.  Running very well are 8th Graders Danielle Peck and Sarah Danner; currently trading off at the #1 spot.  Viviana Cestero (20th at Sectionals) also returns and continues to improve each week.  Maia Cooke and Kyla McDonald often round out the scoring at dual meets.  The success of this team could be determined by injury status of Smith, and Co-captains Angela Devivo and Hayley Yettru, also nursing injuries.

Oct 15:  Trumansburg jumps to the 2nd spot.  The have been fighting some injuries of late but had a strong showing at their own invite this weekend and only lost to Southern Springs by 2 points.

Oct 29: T-Burg was 3rd at the IAC meet behind TAE and Newark Valley; beating Moravia and Southern Springs for the firs time this season.  Sarah Danner, Danielle Peck and Tiffany Borden all have outside shots to make the state meet.

Nov 12: T-Burg rallied late in the season to capture the runner-up trophy.  Sarah Danner, Tiffany Borden and Danielle Peck all placed in the top ten and earned trips to the state meet.  The “Burg” is young but will need significant improvement to nock off Newark Valley next year.

Unatego, Enrollment:  339, League:  MAC, Coach:  Lee Schaeffer

Oct 1:     Seniors Torey Jerauld (29th at ’05 Sectionals) and Clara Barnhart (21st at ’05 Sectionals) have been the leading runners.  With the move of Harpursville and Seton to Class “D” Unatego (5th at ’05 Sectionals last year) could also be a surprise team if they continue to improve.  They were 8th at their own invitational on September 30th.

Oct 15:  Unatego continues to hold a top 4 spot in the section.

Oct 29: Unatego was 3rd at the MAC Championships.  Just fielding a complete team put them in the top ½ of the section.  Alyssa Mazzarella led the team placing 7th at their league meet.

Nov 12: Unatego ran well at Sectionals and was 3rd.

Walton/Downsville, Enrollment:  368, League:  MAC, Coach:  Dennis DuMund, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Oct 1: Walton is currently running their meets incomplete but looks to put things together by mid October to make a strong run during championship time.  There are three girls running for our Walton contingent, and sometimes one for the Downsville half (that would be Stephanie Shellman who hopes to get her 6 races in before sectionals as she doubles with soccer. Heather Merrill from Downsville has been sick and has not competed to date but if she can return Walton/Downsville could surprise a few teams.

Oct 15:  Walton/Downsville continues to not show its full strength.  They could be the sleeper of the section.

Oct 29: They ran incomplete at their league meet and need to have everyone healthy.  Stephanie Shellman was 2nd at their league meet but has a Soccer game the day before and the Saturday after XC sectionals.  I guess we will see if she got her required 6 races in and if she will even run depending on the winning ways of her soccer team.  Currently tied for 4th due to INC running.

Nov 12: Although the team was incomplete at Sectionals Stephanie Shellman qualified for the state meet.

Watkins Glen, Enrollment:  355, League:  IAC, Coach:  Marie Fitzsimmons

Oct 1: The Watkins Glen Girls XC continues to run incomplete so without a full team, the girls from the glen will have to focus on personal success. Sunnie Smith and Danielle McCormick continue to make strides under Coach Fitzsimmons.

Oct 15: The Watkins Glen Girls XC continues to run incomplete so without a full team, the girls from the glen will have to focus on personal success. Sunnie Smith and Danielle McCormick continue to make strides under Coach Fitzsimmons.

Oct 29: Coach Fitzsimmons continues to coach a nice team but with only 3 girls they will be focusing on individual improvement this year.  Currently tied for 4th due to INC running.

Nov 12: Smith and McCormick ran well but Watkins was incomplete at Sectionals.

Waverly, Enrollment:  449, IAC, Coach:  Charlie Hughes

Oct 1:  Kendra Burke has been running well and could be poised to make a run at an individual state meet spot. The team could do well in class “C” as there are several incomplete or young teams.

Oct 15:  Kendra Burke has been running well and could be poised to make a run at an individual state meet spot. The team could do well in class “C” as there are several incomplete or young teams.

Oct 29: Kendra Burke looks in top form after her 7th place finish at the IAC meet.  She is certainly primed to earn a spot to the State meet.  Currently tied for 4th due to INC running.

Nov 12: Waverly captured the 4th team spot.  Kendra Burke had a nice season and just missed a trip to the state meet.

RANKING OF CLASS “D”

(1) Thomas A. Edison (2) Moravia  (3) Harpursville (4) Seton Catholic, (5) Delhi (6) Marathon (7) Afton, Candor, Deposit, GMU and Groton are incomplete at this time.

SUMMARIES

Afton, Enrollment:  178, MAC, Coach:  Steve Oakley, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Nov 12:  This team is running incomplete and will stay incomplete for the year.

Candor Enrollment: 251, League:  IAC, Coach:  Mark Dixson, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Nov 12:  This team is currently running incomplete.

Delhi, Enrollment:  270, League:  MAC, Coach:  Skip Baxter, Last Sectional Championship, N/A

Oct 1:  This girl’s team has been running fairly well and will be a mid pack team.  The beat Harpursville at the Elmira Invitational and placed 24th at Warwick.

Oct 15:  Delhi girls and Harpursville girls could be a toss up.  Harpursville has a nice solid front runner with some support but the Delhi depth can not be counted out.

Oct 29:  Delhi lost to Harpursville at Marathon and the MAC Championships.  Toss Seton and Moravia  into the mix and this will be a great race.

Nov 12:  This team ran well to place 5th at Sectionals. Only 15 points separated 3rd-5th place.

Deposit, Enrollment:  176, MAC, Coach:  Mary Hogan, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Nov 12:  This team is running incomplete and will stay incomplete for the year.

Gilbertville Mt. Upton, Enrollment:  144, MAC, Coach:  Laurie Pedersen, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Nov 12:  This team is running incomplete and will stay incomplete for the year.

Groton, Enrollment:  240, League:  IAC, Coach:  Scott Weeks, Last Sectional Championship-2001

Nov 12:  This team is incomplete and will stay incomplete for the year.

Harpursville, Enrollment:  285, League:  MAC, Coach:  Josh Quick, Dave Groover, Last Sectional Championship-N/A

Oct 1:  Finished 6th at the Schaeffer Invitational.  A average team but seems to be lacking some depth.  Their front runner helps them a great deal in large invitationals.  Seton place 4th at the Schaeffer Invitational.

Oct 15:  Delhi girls and Harpursville girls could be a toss up.  Harpursville has a nice solid front runner with some support but the Delhi depth can not be counted out.

Oct 29:  Harpursville lost to Seton and beat Delhi at the Marathon Invitational.  This was close for a big meet and the result could change in a small meet.  Harpursville has a better team composite than Seton and their top runner could be the edge they need to beat Seton.   The edge goes to Harpursville.

Nov 12:  This team ran exceptional well to place 3rd at Sectionals.

Marathon, Enrollment:  235, League:  IAC, Coach:  Todd James, Last Sectional Championship-2002

Oct 1:  This is a fairly new squad for the Olympians but the team is improving every week.  If they keep training hard they could be a mid pack team by Sectional Time.

Oct 15:  This team has been running incomplete for the last two weeks and hopes to be a complete squad by Sectional Time.

Oct 29:  This team is back to running complete and should be a six place finisher at Sectionals.

Nov 12:  Placed where they were expected to finish.  This team ran well for a predominately rookie squad.

Moravia, Enrollment:  254, League:  IAC, Coach:  Jan Hunsinger, Last Sectional Championship-2004

Oct 1:  This team ran really well and McQuaid and could be the team to beat for the runner up position at Sectionals.

Oct 15:  This team is running well.  They placed 2nd at the IAC Divisional Meet behind Southern Cayuga.

Oct 29:  Moravia very well could be the 2nd best team in Class D but they really have not run head to head with Seton, Delhi or Harpursville.  Their team composite is much higher than the other teams when comparing Marathon Invitational and IAC Championship times but the IAC Meet was contended in rain and a flooded Marathon Course.  Put Moravia tied with Seton for third and see if this team can regain their second place positioning.

Nov 12:  Moravia put it together to be the second best team in Class D.

Seton Catholic Enrollment:  282, League:  STAC, Coach:  Brian Hyland, Last Sectional Championship-2003

Oct 1:  Place 4th at the Schaeffer Invitational.  This team is running well but needs to pack them in closer to be a contender for the runner up spot at the Sectional Meet.

Oct 15:  This team could be Moravia.  They ran fairly well at the STAC Meet and could be a contender for the runner up position.  The will compete at the Marathon Invitational on the 21st.

Oct 29:  Seton beat Harpursville and Delhi at the Marathon Invitational.  This was close for a big meet and the result could change in a small meet.  Harpursville has a better team composite than Seton and their top runner could be the edge they need to beat Seton.

Nov 12:  Seton ran well as a team to place 4th at Sectionals.  Harpursville benefited by their number one girl to beat Seton by 8 points.

Thomas A. Edison, Enrollment:  281, League:  IAC, Coach:  Skip Strobel, Last Sectional Championship-2005

Oct 1:  Currently, one of the top teams in the State.  Place 3rd at McQuaid and should repeat as the Section Champs.

Oct 15:  Obviously the top team in Class D.  They will run in the Seeded Section of the Marathon Invitational on Saturday and this race will be a good indicator as to how good this team could be in the post season.

Oct 29:  Won the Marathon Invitational and the IAC Championships.  Looked impressive in both races.  This team could win it all at the Class D State Meet.

Nov 12:  They did it again!  NYSPHSAA State Champions.
