Welcome

After ten amazing years together, Jewels of the Quill, a group of award-winning women authors, disbanded as of June 20, 2014. They were featured in the September 2003 issue of RT Book Reviews. Together, the group produced two award-winning group anthologies per year published by Whiskey Creek Press from 2005-2011 (all out of print). In short, these writers offer writing treasures for every reader. Below you’ll find personal farewells from each of the members of the group.

Karen Wiesner Karen Wiesner (Dame Amethyst), Founder, 2003-2014

"After a decade, it’s time for me to move away from Jewels of the Quill and concentrate solely on my writing. As group founder and representative, I really couldn’t imagine the group continuing without me. Jewels of the Quill is a part of me, and I always want it to have my name and stamp, even after we disband. Discontinuing the group wasn’t an easy decision for me because I’m so emotionally involved with each of the authors. In some cases, I’ve known some of them since before I became published. I have such pride in all of them. It’s been my pleasure to represent them with this group.

"A little history: Jewels of the Quill started based on my frustration with New York publishers’ “new” policy of not allowing any author without an agent to submit material. So my idea was, I’ll start an agency of authors representing authors, so we can submit to New York publishers. Long story short, not really doable, lol. But the idea of a group of authors banding together for promotion appealed to me. In the process of putting together the group, I became a representative for many authors but in a different way than I originally intended. Jewels of the Quill was launched in July 2003. Incidentally, my idea for the group name was Dames of the Quill, but it was Carrie S. Masek who perfected the name by suggesting “Jewels of the Quill” instead. Ironically, when we were got started, there were hardly any writing promotional groups in existence (i.e., groups of authors banded together for the purpose of promoting). Now there’s been an explosion of writing groups. Can I consider Jewels of the Quill instrumental in growing that trend? Maybe.

"While I’m ready to let the group go, it’s not my intention to leave behind any of the authors who were at any point involved in the group. In the 10 years we’ve been together, we’ve had some of the most talented writers imaginable right here in our little group include the current members and those past: Michele Bardsley (Dame Obsidian), Alice Blue (Dame Opal), Sherry Derr-Wille (Dame Diamond), Debbie Fritter (Dame Emerald), Judith B. Glad (Dame Alexandrite), Diana Kirk (Dame Pearl), Lisa Mills (Dame Citrine), Jaye Roycraft (Dame Ruby), Nancy Pirri (Dame Sapphire), Dee Lloyd (Dame Aquamarine), Julie Skerven (Dame Peridot), Liz Hunter (Dame Garnet), C.J. Winters (Dame Tanzanite), and our special guest dames Natasha Perry, Roxi Romano, and Cassie Walder. I’m in awe of each author. Wow, have we had an incredible run together. Our 2014 mission statement was: “Over 525 books published by a hundred publishers, won or finaled for nearly 300 awards.” If we added all the authors who’ve been part of this group since 2003…who can dispute we offer something for any reader? And consider our fourteen award-winning group anthologies. Though all are now out of print, they’re our legacy of writing gems. We really are Jewels of the Quill.

"To the fans who have been with us all this time or even a short time, I can’t thank you enough. I hope you take the time to join each of our authors’ newsletters or visit our websites so we don’t lose touch with you. I love each of you and I’m so grateful for how long you stuck with us."

Karen participated in all fourteen the group anthologies during her time with the group. Her contributions include: The Amethyst Angel in TALES I; A Home for Christmas in SMALL GIFTS; A Rose for Romeo, Book 1 of the Adventures in Amethyst Series in TREASURES OF THE HEART; The Amethyst Star in TALES II; Revenge in Amethyst, Book 2 of the Adventures in Amethyst Series in TALES III; Papa, Book 1 of the Woodcutter’s Grim Series in SHADOWS IN THE HEART; Blood of Amethyst, Book 2 of the Woodcutter’s Grim Series in TALES IV; Perfect Cadence, Book 1 of the Kaleidoscope Series in CHRISTMAS WISHES; In Cahoots With Cupid, Book 2 of the Kaleidoscope Series in MAGICAL KISSES; Behind Amethyst Eyes, Book 3 of the Kaleidoscope Series in TALES V; Jordana’s Chair, Book 4 of the Kaleidoscope Series in TALES VI; Paper Tiger, Book 5 of the Kaleidoscope Series in HALLOWEEN TREASURES; Moonlight Becomes You, Book 4 of the Woodcutter’s Grim Series in TALES VII; and Wings of Love, Book 1 of the Cowboy Fever Series in CHRISTMAS GEMS. All of these stories have been reissued. Visit her website for more details.

Regina Andrews Regina Andrews (Dame Ametrine), Member 2012-2014

"To all the fans of Jewels of the Quill and Dame Ametrine,

"There's an old saying that states "What goes around, comes around". This adage has been demonstrated over and over again in my three wonderful years with Jewels of the Quill.

"Writing inspirational romances and my Sterling Lakes Series has been a dream come true, and I have the Jewels and you fans to thank for that. As we say farewell, I'd like to thank the talented authors, led by the fantastic Karen Wiesner, as well as you, my faithful readers, for making so many dreams that I held close to my heart come true.

"When I was invited to join the Jewels by the outstanding author Diane Craver, who is also an incredible person and dear friend, I felt the doors of the writing world opening to me. What a fantastic experience, to be among such talented, collegial professionals who support each other with a bond that is solid and firm. I have learned so much from this group, and I promise to uphold the quality and tenor found here in all my future writings.

"Special thanks to Karen Wiesner, who welcomed me with open arms and an open heart to the Jewels. She has worked tirelessly on behalf of all the Jewels, and in particular, she has guided me graciously since I joined. Karen has designed the beautiful covers for all my books, and her talent, kindness and generosity make her a remarkable woman. Thank you, Karen, and blessings always.

"Readers and fans, thank you so much for your support and encouragement in my writing. You can look forward to many more exciting publications from me in the future, so be sure to visit my website often. From the very beginning of my writing days, reading my stories to my parents around the kitchen table, I have had faith in my books. But it is through you that it has all "come around", and I deeply appreciate your interest and support. Please stay in touch, as this is not 'adieu', but 'au revoir'. Bless you always, Regina, Dame Ametrine"

Michele Bardsley Michele Bardsley (Dame Obsidian), Member 2005-2006

"Jewels of the Quill are terrific writers and classy dames. My time as Dame Obsidian totally rocked (get it...rocked?). I feel very fortunate to have been a member of this group. Karen Wiesner does the work of a dozen people and her commitment and effort on behalf of Jewels of the Quill is awe-inspiring. I wish every Jewel love and laughter. Thanks for a wonderful year!"

Michele participated in two of our group anthologies during her time with the group, including the initial stories in her Angels of Patrol Series, Heart of Grace, Book 1 (TREASURES OF THE HEART) and Heart of Obsidian, Book 2 (in TALES II).

Alice Blue Alice Blue (Dame Opal), Member 2003-2005

"I very much enjoyed my association with Jewels of the Quill members. The friendships are much prized. Since my income didn't justify the expense, circumstances dictated that I no longer belong to the group. I will miss the camaraderie and the knowledgeable information often received. May you all have much success."

Alice passed away on December 16, 2010. She wrote western romance novels and her ninth book was about to be published. She contributed the western romance novella, The Best Kind of Opals, to TALES I.

Margaret L. Carter Margaret L. Carter (Dame Onyx), Member 2005-2014

"After nine years as a member of Jewels of the Quill, I’m going to miss the group very much. I’ve grown a lot as a writer in that time, and the themes of the Jewels’ holiday anthologies inspired the writing of a couple of my favorites among my shorter works. I hope our fans will follow us into our future adventures in writing. For lovers of vampires, I hope you’ve enjoyed the stories and novels in my Vanishing Breed Series. Also, please visit the VampChix and Bite Club site, where I post monthly on older, often neglected vampire fiction. If you’d like to keep up with me, please check out my free monthly News from the Crypt."

Margaret participated in three of our group anthologies during her time with the group with the stories The Unvanished Hitchhiker in SHADOWS IN THE HEART; Little Cat Feet in CHRISTMAS WISHES; and Mistress of the Shadow Hounds in HALLOWEEN TREASURES. These stories (and bonus ones) are included in DAME ONYX TREASURES. Visit Margaret’s website for more details.

"When Karen asked me to join the Jewels, I was honored because of all the immense talent in this group of authors. I enjoyed being a part of Jewels of the Quill for the last four years. I’ll always be grateful to Karen for her wonderful leadership, friendship, and the time-consuming marketing she did for us. Before Christmas I asked Karen if she would create a cover for my short Amish Christmas story. During the busiest time of the year, she made the most beautiful cover. This is Karen...a talented writer and a lovely lady who is always ready to help.

"Thanks to my fans of my Amish series, and I hope you’ll continue to follow the Hershberger and Weaver families in Fields Corner, Ohio, as more challenges happen to the characters in my future books.

"Please visit me often at my website for new and upcoming releases, and at my blog. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about my books or just to stay in touch. I appreciate my readers and your wonderful support. Blessings to each of you, Diane, Dame Morganite"

Sherry Derr-Wille Sherry Derr-Wille (Dame Diamond), Member 2003-2005

"In every relationship there is a time to say hello and a time to say good-bye. I have found that my career is taking me in several new and exciting directions. In order to do justice to both the group and myself, I have made the decision to leave the Jewels of the Quill. Although I will no longer be featured, I will be accessible to my friends and fans. I have enjoyed being part of the Jewels of the Quill and wish everyone the best. Please keep up with what is happening in my career at my website, where you can contact me. I always look forward to hearing from old friends."

Sherry participated in TALES I with the story Diamond Magee.

Christine DeSmet Christine DeSmet (Dame Moonstone), Original Member, 2003-2014

"To the fans of Dame Moonstone and Jewels of the Quill,

"Thank you to all the fans of my quaint, quirky romantic mysteries set in fictional Moonstone, Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Superior, as well as a Christmas story set in Birch Bay, Wisconsin.

"You loved the nice and caring characters, and the silkie chickens in every story. Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad my stories make you smile as you experience small-town life.

"A year ago I moved on to a cozy mystery series set in Door County, Wisconsin. The Fudge Shop Mystery Series features the first Belgian sleuth since Hercule Poirot, but this one is a woman, Ava Oosterling. Look for FIRST-DEGREE FUDGE on the shelves now, and this summer, HOT FUDGE FRAME-UP. Next year, look for FIVE-ALARM FUDGE. There are recipes in every book, and lots of true lore about Door County and Wisconsin and Belgian culture here.

"There’s also a mischievous fudge-colored dog in The Fudge Shop Mystery series, the American Water Spaniel. It’s a breed invented in Wisconsin. Maybe sooner or later I’ll bring the silkie chickens into these stories, too. What do you think? Give me your votes on that!

"Thank you for your interest in my short stories and novels. Your support has been wonderful.

"Please come visit me online at University of Wisconsin-Madison Continuing Studies where I teach writing online and in person. You’ll find me leading writing retreats and teaching at conferences.

"I’m always available by email if you have questions and comments about your writing life or anything in my stories and books. Email: cdesmet@dcs.wisc.edu."

Christine participated in ten of our group anthologies during her time with the group with the stories Sex with the Man in the Moon (in TALES I); When Rudolph Was Kidnapped, Book 1, Mischief in Moonstone Series (in SMALL GIFTS); Misbehavin’ in Moonstone, Book 2, Mischief in Moonstone Series (in TALES II); Mrs. Claus and the Moonstone Murder, Book 3, Mischief in Moonstone Series (in Tales III); When the Dead People Brought a Dish-To-Pass, Book 4, Mischief in Moonstone Series (in SHADOWS IN THE HEART); The Moonstone Fire, Book 1: Men of Moonstone Series (in TALES IV); All She Wore Was a Bow, Book 2: Men of Moonstone Series (in CHRISTMAS WISHES); The Big Love & Murder Shilly-Shally in Moonstone, Book 6, Mischief in Moonstone Series (in TALES V); and The Christmas Magi of Birch Bay (in CHRISTMAS GEMS). Debbie Fritter Debbie Fritter (Dame Emerald), Member 2003-2005

"It is with sadness that, due to the demands of my writing career, I must depart Jewels of the Quill. This is not good-bye to JOTQ fans or from the other Jewels, it is simply a farewell until we meet again in another place and another time."

Debbie also writes under the pseudonyms Maxine Douglas and Debi Wilder. Debbie participated in TALES I with the story Emerald, which has been reissued. Visit her website for more information.

Judith B. Glad Judith B. Glad (Dame Alexandrite), Member 2009-2010

"The decision to say goodbye to Jewels of the Quill was not an easy one. I enjoyed the camaraderie, the support, and the sharing that were part of belonging. My life, however, kept getting more complicated, and those complications interfered with my ability to do my share of Dame activities. Finally it became obvious that something had to give, and since my responsibilities at Uncial Press had to take precedence, I reluctantly said farewell. I'll miss belonging, but will cherish my memories of being a Jewel."

So, for all my readers and Jewels of the Quill, it has been an honor sharing these web pages with you and I especially thank Karen Wiesner who has been my pillar and rock this past year. "I’m lucky enough to have been part of Jewels of the Quill from the very beginning. We’ve had a wonderful ten year run, thanks mostly to the hard work of our leader, Karen Wiesner. I don’t know of any author who’s done so much for other writers. Thanks, Karen!

"What an honor to have been part of such a talented group of authors! Thank you, ladies, for including me all these years, for writing such wonderful books and stories, and for your feedback and insights that helped make my stories ones that I was proud to include in our Jewels of the Quill anthologies.

"To you, our fans: Thank you for your support, encouragement and enthusiasm. I enjoyed every story I wrote during the last ten years, particularly the ones published in the Jewels of the Quill anthologies. I enjoyed your notes and comments about those stories even more. You’re a great bunch and I hope you keep reading and enjoying the books and stories we former Jewels of the Quill will continue to write…even though we will no longer be promoting them together.

"I’d like to thank the members of the Jewels of the Quill for having me as a fellow member for the past several years. It was an honor--a privilege--to be among such talented writers. January 2011, I ventured into the opposite end of the writing spectrum—publishing. I started a company, Melange Books, LLC, and we are growing by leaps and bounds! We are a multi-genre publishing house, in print and digital formats. It’s been a great learning experience over the past year. I’ve come to realize that this is what I was meant to do in life. Better late than never! In 2012, I also opened a young adult imprint called Fire and Ice. We’re actively seeking submissions!"

Nancy has participated in seven of our group anthologies during her time with the group with the stories The Sheriff Takes a Wife (in TREASURES OF THE HEART); For the Love of Sapphire (in TALES II); Princess Sapphire (in TALES III); Sapphire Dreams, Book 1 of the Sapphire Palace Series (in TALES IV); Annie’s Outlaw, Book 2 of the Sapphire Palace Series (in CHRISTMAS WISHES); Winning Sylvia’s Heart (in MAGICAL KISSES); and The Incomparable Miss Scarlet (in TALES VI). Barbara Raffin Barbara Raffin (Dame Jade), Original Member 2003-2014

"I can't believe Jewels of the Quill has been a part of my life for ten years. Even more, I can't quite wrap my brain around the group no longer being a part of my life. But we've accomplished all we can as a group and it's time to move on.

"As a charter member, I was among the twelve original Jewels whose first anthology won us many awards, among them the prestigious EPPIE. We advertised as a group, sharing expenses, while getting our names and books out where our readers could find them. We built a fan base. We did book signings together. We supported each other. Though members have come and gone, I've forgotten none of them. There's a special place in my heart for those the world lost as well, the most recent being my dear friend Jane Toombs.

"Above all, this group would not have been formed nor flourished if not for the leadership of Karen Wiesner. It is because of her knowledge of marketing and her hard work that we have enjoyed ten productive years as Jewels of the Quill. Her talent, insight, energy, and, above all, friendship will never be forgotten by this dame, Dame Jade.

"Last but by no means least because I'm taking you all with me wherever I go! Thank you to the fans who have enjoyed my angst-ridden paranormal, contemporary, and historical romances. There will be more. And thank you to the fans who are now discovering my lighter side in my contemporary romances. The St. John Sibling Series is just beginning! Find and follow me through my web and blog pages listed below.

"Happy Reading! Barbara Raffin a.k.a. Dame Jade"

Barbara participated in three of our group anthologies during her time with the group with the stories Jaded (in TALES I); The Sting of Love (in TREASURES OF THE HEART); and The Scarecrow and Ms. Moon (in HALLOWEEN TREASURES). Jaye Roycraft Jaye Roycraft (Dame Ruby), Member 2003-2005

"It has been an honor and a pleasure to be a Jewel, and I have enjoyed the fellowship of the many signings, shows and conventions I've attended as Dame Ruby. Unfortunately, my writing is moving away from romance, so I must seek out new avenues of promotion. I will always treasure this time in my career, and I know that many of the friendships forged here will remain. A big thanks, too, to my fans for their support."

Jaye participated in TALES I with her story The Ruby Kiss.

Even though I'm leaving the group, I'll still be there for my fans. They can always reach me at my website. I wish all the Jewels the best, and now it's time for me to say goodbye."

Julie participated in three of our group anthologies during her time with the group, including the stories Peridot Moon (in TALES I); A Kiss Under the Mistletoe (in SMALL GIFTS); and Penelope’s Problem (in TREASURES OF THE HEART). Jane Toombs Jane Toombs (Dame Turquoise), Original Member, 2003-2014

Goodbye

All good things eventually end
Jewels of the Quill is no exception.
We've enjoyed a long and happy run
Thanks to your enthusiastic reception.

Beautiful turquoise is my gem
My birthstone, one I adore.
Readers, too, are lovely gems
But now we will meet no more.

We're sad that the farewells must come
Our painful hearts remind us,
But each of us will write more tales
Just not as jewels--come find us!

Jane participated in all but one of the group anthologies during her time with the group. Her contributions include: The Turquoise Mask in TALES I; Winter Enchantment in SMALL GIFTS; The Turquoise Cat, Book 1 of the North of Nonesuch Series in TALES II; The Turquoise Talisman, Book 2 of the North of Nonesuch Series in TALES III; The Beast in SHADOWS IN THE HEART; Turquoise Twilight, Book 3 of the North of Nonesuch Series in TALES IV; Are You Listening?, Book 6 of the North of Nonesuch Series in CHRISTMAS WISHES; The Third Kiss in MAGICAL KISSES; The Turquoise Heart, Book 7 of the North of Nonesuch Series in TALES V; The Nonesuch Curse, Book 8 of the North of Nonesuch Series in TALES VI; The Charmer, Book 9 of the North of Nonesuch Series in HALLOWEEN TREASURES; The Turquoise Gown in TALES VII; and A Christmas Surprise in CHRISTMAS GEMS. Some of these stories are available in NORTH OF NONESUCH SERIES. Visit her website for more details.

It’s with great sadness and devastation that we announce that our beloved Dame Turquoise Jane Toombs passed away on March 5, 2014. Jane was one of the original members of Jewels of the Quill and, long before, was known as a champion of other writers as well as for new publishers (especially electronic publishers). To know Jane was to love her. She was such an amazing person as well as a phenomenal writer. Her many, many novels will live on as a testament to her brilliance. Visit her website for more information. Also, read Janet Lane Walters’ memorial to Jane on her blog: http://wwweclecticwriter.blogspot.com/search?q=Jane+Toombs and Jane’s obituary. Jane will be greatly missed.

Janet Lane Walters Janet Lane Walters (Dame Amber), Member 2006-2014

"Since 2006, I've been Dame Amber in the Jewels of the Quill. Being with the other authors in the group and sharing their triumphs has been a grand experience. I enjoyed sharing my stories with the many readers who came to read the stories of the Jewels. Writing for the anthologies and being edited by my colleagues helped me write some interesting stories for the anthologies. I've read stories by each of the Jewels who are now among the twelve and enjoyed them all. Though sorry the group is disbanding, I'll always remember the other Jewels with fondness. I wish each and every one of the past and present Jewels greater success in their writing."

Janet participated in three of our group anthologies during her time with the group, including the stories Woman Cast in Amber, Book 1 of the Amber Chronicles (in TALES IV); Woman Freed from Amber, Book 2 of the Amber Chronicles (in TALES V); The Amber Dragon, Book 3 of the Amber Chronicles (in TALES VI); and The Amber Tower, Book 4 of the Amber Chronicles (in TALES VII). These stories have been reissued with bonus stories in AMBER CHRONICLES. Find out more at Janet’s website.

C.J. Winters (Dame Tanzanite), Member 2005-2009

Connie Severson (who wrote as C.J. Winters) passed on January 3, 2009 following a mercifully short struggle with metastatic cancer and attendant strokes. The members of Jewels of the Quill were stunned and saddened to hear the tragic news about our beloved Dame Tanzanite. She was a vital and cherished member of our group and an author with profound and eternal talent that will never be forgotten by her readers.

Connie's contributions to Jewels of the Quill anthologies included The Tanzanite Curse, available in TALES III. The Tanzanite Return, the sequel to The Tanzanite Curse, was published in TALES IV. Connie contributed White Elephants to SHADOWS IN THE HEART. Connie's light mystery novella, Princess and the Tanzanite Necklace, was published in TALES V. She was also contracted to contribute the sequel to White Elephants, titled The Horse in the Kitchen, in the group's second Halloween anthology, HALLOWEEN TREASURES. She will be missed terribly by each of us.

Karen Woods Karen Woods (Dame Coral), Original Member 2003-2014

"I'm sorry to see the Jewels disband. It's been a pleasure and a privilege to get to know so many of our fans. I hope that you've enjoyed our time together as much as I have. My fellow Jewels are just that: jewels; precious, precious, people with whom it has been a joy to work with. Even though my work is heading more into my visual art than my verbal art, I will always write both fiction and nonfiction. I could no more stop writing than stop breathing. So you can always find me at my websites listed below. May God richly bless you all."

Writing as both Cassie Walder and Karen Woods, Karen participated in eight of our group anthologies during her time with the group, including the stories Bloodstone Cure, Book 1 of The Saurian Series in TALES I; Deck the Halls in SMALL GIFTS; Heart of Stone in TREASURES OF THE HEART; Bloodstone Legacy, Book 2 of The Saurian Series in TALES III; Ghost of a Chance in SHADOWS IN THE HEART; Saurian Bloodstone, Book 3 of The Saurian Series in TALES IV; Christmas Faith in CHRISTMAS WISHES; and Atop a Wedding Cake in MAGICAL KISSES. Ghost of a Chance has been reissued. Visit Karen’s website for more details.
