When Wings "Mac" Mackenzie falls in love, it's for life, and interior designer Amanda Grant is the woman he has his heart set on. When he asked her to move in with him at his fixer-upper ranch in Fever, Texas--the dinky little cattle town he and his brother grew up in—he'd expected to be there with her often. Unfortunately, as co-owner of a family-owned engineering firm, Mac finds himself spending more time than ever overseeing projects after his younger brother becomes a family man. With Amanda making the house a home for them, he struggles to get his business matters in hand so he can settle down with her, the way he longs to. An on-the-job injury puts his life in perspective. Eager to become a full-time rancher, he returns home at Christmas-time, ready to make the ultimate commitment to Amanda--only to find her long gone.

“This was a neat short novella with sentiment from the past, sadness, long lost love, with a feel of a throwback relationship. I loved the secondary characters, especially Mama May, Maggie May, and Shell. They made this novella three-dimensional. Mac was a sweet character, with a lot of love, and compassion, but he had put the horse before the carriage one too many times before in his relationships, so he was being overly careful. Amanda was a strong willed woman, with a lovely grace and spark about her. She was a looking for the right man but was tired of always ending up with the wrong man and wasn't going to tolerate anything less than 100%. This time she wanted the words or nothing at all. The characters were endearing, and I grew fond of them.” ~A Bookish Escape Blog http://www.abookishescape.com/2013/09/book-reviews-wings-of-love-cowboy-fever.html

Lance Olsen, Triple Aces Ranch co-owner, lost his wife Colleen and their two-year-old son in a fire four years ago. Colleen became the love of his life and he can’t imagine ever getting over what they shared enough to move on and start again. At this point in his continued grief, the ranch is all that matters to him. He believes his heart is dead to him.

Colleen’s baby sister, Janaya Gaines, left the ranch right out high school to pursue a different life—and to forget. Though she’d gone home for her sister and nephew's funerals, she’d been too devastated to stay long...or to ever imagine coming home again. All her life, her sister had gotten everything she’d set her mind to, everything Janaya had wanted. Instead of competing and giving in to her resentment, Janaya left to find a life and maybe love of her own. But no one could ever replace Lance Olsen in her heart.

When she comes home, accepting that the life she’s tried to build for herself has been a matter of mostly losses and few gains, she doesn’t expect Lance’s anger at her selfishness in staying away, nor does she anticipate that the animosity between them could ever stir the embers of true love.

4 Stars! “Janaya was a great character, loving and kind to everyone. I really enjoyed this novella. A few of the characters are misunderstood, and their dramas were each played out with interesting storytelling on the part of Ms. Wiesner. I liked the idea that each of the novellas are about the same small town in Fever, Texas, and that all of the characters encountered in the novellas each have their own story yet they are all intertwined.” ~A Bookish Escape Blog http://www.abookishescape.com/2013/09/book-reviews-wings-of-love-cowboy-fever.html

Jared Chapman is the ranch foreman at Triple Aces Ranch, which he co-owns. When he gave his heart to Alana Hamilton, an orphan his grandmother brought to the ranch, he’d never regretted it. As a young man, he’d had no idea how to share the intensity of feelings he had for sweet and vulnerable, seventeen-year-old Alana. Instead, he’d awkwardly promised her he’d always be there for her.

Alana had loved Jared from the start for the kindness he showed her, but she didn’t possess beauty, smarts or riches. Unwanted for most of her life, she’d learned to make the best of her lot in life. Not sure what a close-mouthed cowboy like Jared meant with his promise, she accepted the proposal of the one man who’d expressed interest in marrying her. Marriage to Holt Bowman meant leaving the only place she’d ever called home and giving up on true, fairy-tale love with Jared.

Jared had been silently devastated by Alana’s marriage. But, true to his promise, when her husband begins to take the pressures of being up-and-coming politician out on her, Jared runs to her rescue. Alana isn’t looking for a bodyguard. Can Jared open up and become the prince who will love her for always?

4 ½ Stars! “Alana Hamilton came from humble beginnings. She was a waif of a girl who didn't possess natural beauty, but what she did possess was a hard work ethic, and a gentle, loving, nurturing heart. She was an orphan, living without love or a home until one day she was rescued, at eleven years old, by Nelly Chapman. Nelly was a rancher who lived on Triple Aces Ranch with her son, daughter-in-law, and their son, 16 year old Jared. Jared Chapman and Alana became very close, both having a deep attraction for one another, but each too shy to let the other know their true feelings. Though they did not speak the words, their actions were apparent to Nelly. Alana had finally found everything to make her heart content. Nelly was very loving and kind to Alana till the day she died, and 17 year old Alana was crushed, decided she did not want to burden the family, so she left the only home she ever knew and moved into town. She was selfless, and though she went, her heart was at the ranch with Jared. Jared's kindness showed brightly as he visited daily to make sure Alana was doing well. Jared Chapman was a man of high moral standards and truly loved Alana. He wanted to tell her so many times how he felt about her, but the words were never within reach. When his grandmother Nelly died, she left him her pearl necklace and matching ring. The only woman he had ever loved was Alana from the moment he laid eyes on her. He knew how she felt about Nelly, so he gave her the necklace, hoping someday to give her the matching ring to make her his. Unfortunately, he missed his chance and she married a high society man named Holt Bowman, a man who was in politics, and a man of means who could give her anything her heart desired. Unfortunately, all she desired was Jared, but she left with Holt, leaving Jared heartbroken, and leaving herself without the man she has always loved and would never forget. Karla Sanford-Abrams was Alana's only friend, who grew up with her on the co-op ranches, when Alana moved away with Holt and left Fever, Texas. Karla was a good friend to Alana and helped her through an abusive relationship with Holt. Every week, unbeknownst to Alana, Jared called Karla and he would hem and haw around to get information about Alana. Of course Karla kept it to herself but was on to him. When things got devastatingly bad for Alana, Karla finally told Jared. Let me tell you, this night and shining armor came to her rescue. The cast of characters were well rounded and likeable, except Holt (intentionally) which will make you want to belt him! Ms. Wiesner does a great job with her prose and descriptions, and she made it all believable for me. The characters showed growth. There were tough, life lessons to overcome, friendship, betrayal, and loyalty all wrapped up into a neat package. I give For Always 4.5 Lost, Lonely, Deceptive, Life Changing, Romantically Longing Stars!” ~A Bookish Escape http://www.abookishescape.com/2013/09/book-reviews-for-always-cowboy-fever.html

Shawn Jacobs, co-owner of Triple Aces Ranch, is the ultimate ladies’ man. But, as his best friends find the women of their dreams and get hitched one by one, he wonders what he’s missing.

Once a classmate of Shawn’s and the daughter of a hard-working ranch hand who never had enough money to buy her a dress, let alone move out of the filthy hovel they’d lived in together after her mother’s death, April St. Clair is a high-powered lawyer. She’s left the dirty, dusty, stinking life of cattle ranching as far behind her as she can get. The men she dates are dressed to the nine’s, and their hands are as soft as their hearts. Unfortunately, she hasn’t come home once since she left for college. When her father dies—alone—she’s devastated. The only thing he left behind is a young mare that he’d wanted Shawn Jacobs and no other to train.

When the beautiful, snotty, green-eyed blond shows up at Triple Aces in treacherous high heels and designer clothing, asking him to train her father’s horse, Shawn’s amusement quickly turns to annoyance—and more. April infuriates him even as she turns him on. He knows it isn’t just the wild horse that needs to be tamed. April resists him at every turn, but even she isn’t immune to cowboy fever.

5 Stars! “April St. Clair left Fever, Texas 15 years ago, for college, and became a lawyer who lived the good life. April came from the small ranch town, lived with her father after her mother died, and could never get her father to leave that town though he didn't have two dimes to rub together. Her father changed once her mother and sibling died tragically. They both lost someone that bonded them, and neither shared a real relationship after that day. April worked hard and studied hard to get good grades and hightailed it out of town the day she graduated from high school. April wanted to get him an apartment, but she didn't understand that her father was a proud man and a hard worker. He wanted to live and die there. April was ashamed of her father, Pete St. Clair, his tattered clothing, lack of education, and foul mouth. She never saw beyond the surface, how much he adored her, loved her. He was "the salt of the earth" to everyone else who knew him. Repeatedly Pete asked her to visit, but April always had an excuse for why she couldn't. She put it off one too many times, until the day she gets the dreaded phone call to tell her her father had died alone in a rundown trailer in Fever. She is devastated and had to learn the meaning of life out of the threads of death that lay before her. April never found out how very sick her father was for months before he died. He never said a word to her, even when he went to visit her and she was rude to him in front of her partner at the law firm. The only thing of value her father had to leave her was a young mare named Misty, that he wanted Shawn Jacobs to train for him. That was the beginning of a tumultuous relationship and quite a battle of wills. April and Shawn had always been attracted and flirted with each other since they were in high school together, but Shawn was the bad boy who could get any girl he wanted, and April was the smartest girl in the school, geeky, with her nose buried in a book all the time. Shawn had one bad relationship that left him sour and insecure with a rich girl named Raquel who used him, then threw him away easily. When April came to town for her father's burial, he misjudged her just because she reminded him of his snotty ex. This novella was a whirlwind romance that started with definite attraction from both characters but animosity at the same time. Once a rich boyfriend shows up in town, all hell breaks loose. April has quite a few “Aha!” moments when a friend of her father's, Lindy, discloses a lot of secrets to her that she never realized. The development of the characters came naturally with so many twists and turns. I loved this romantic, humorous novella. Ms. Wiesner makes it very enjoyable for the reader. The first part of the novella tore my heart out. I felt so many mixed emotions. This was a very quick read that will leave you smiling. I give Taming April 5 Emotionally Charged, Hot Cowboy, Fun Filled Stars!” ~A Bookish Escape http://www.abookishescape.com/2013/09/book-reviews-for-always-cowboy-fever.html

More than five years ago, Ken Abrams, Triple Aces Ranch co-owner, and his wife Karla were madly in love and expecting their first child. Tragedy took that unborn daughter from them and drove them into opposite corners. Seeing how unaffected Ken seemed by the loss of their child shook Karla’s whole world. He didn’t want to talk; didn’t even appear to grieve. The very next morning, he was back out on his horse, doing ranch work, and she couldn’t forgive him his ease in coping—especially when his work seemed to take over his entire life so she rarely saw him anymore. Devastated, Karla left him. Ken is the only man she’s ever loved, and, after five years apart, she knows she has to make a decision: wash her hands of their marriage, or confront him about the loss of their unborn daughter.

Ken never understood why Karla left him, and, the few times he’s contacted her, she’s been as cold and volatile as a rattlesnake. He can only believe she also blames him for the death of their unborn child. He allows her the silent separation, unwilling to risk her asking him for a divorce. The death of his daughter tore him to pieces. Losing Karla will finish him for sure.

When Ken shows up with her four brothers at the exotic dance club Karla’s been working as a waitress to make ends meet, she sees that he hasn’t changed at all—and she tells him she wants a divorce ASAP. Can Ken prove the loss of their child all but destroyed him and she’s still the only one for him?

5 Heartfelt, Emotionally Charged, Second Chance Love Stars! “The Only One by Karen Wiesner is the continuing saga of the Cowboy Fever Series. This was the sad story of loss and separation of Ken and Karla Abrams. These two were great characters. The book was a wonderful addition to the series. This novella was a very sad story of time lost because of misunderstandings. Ken loved his wife so much and was devastated with the loss of their child, and then the loss of his wife when she walked out on him. Karla moved away to the big city of Lubbock and, without any skills, had to get a job in an erotic dance club waitressing. She was a headstrong woman and didn't want to ask anyone for anything. She had aspirations of going to school someday and doing more with her life, but with the wages she was making, that time wouldn't come too soon. These two are reunited by her brothers, as they kidnap Ken to get him to the club to face his wife. The wedding of their friends at Triple Aces, April and Shawn, is upon them and decisions have to be made. Ms. Wiesner does a wonderful job on her ability to make the reader connect with the devastation, torment, heart-wrenching sadness that encompasses these two characters. The reader is a part of the story in every way. The love between these two characters was magnetic. I loved this story immensely. I look forward to the last segment of this series, which I will be reviewing next month. Don't miss out on this wonderful series. A definite must for you TBR!” ~A Bookish Escape http://www.abookishescape.com/2013/11/book-review-only-one-cowboy-fever.html

Easy to love, hard to hold...

Maggie May’s pa is still looking for the cowboy who knocked up his cowgirl vixen daughter five years ago. Little Tex has grown up without a father, but he’s the shining star of the May Ranch. Like his father, though, he’s always running off and disappearing. Just when Maggie May thinks it’ll never happen, the drifter she loves shows up, suddenly wise to the fact that his oh-so-altruistic efforts to quiet her endless stream of conversation had ended with a child. Horse trainer for hire and former rodeo bullfighter, Ryder McCall returns to Fever, Texas. This time, Maggie May plans to get him back in her clutches--and win his heart forever.

Read an excerpt

“Despite her “bad girl” reputation, Maggie May was secretly a virgin until she set her sights on drifter Ryder McCall. Horse trainer and rodeo bull-rider, Ryder had promised to stay away from his employer's delectable daughter, but fate, and Maggie, had other plans. A sudden summer storm washed out her surprise picnic but the shelter of a deserted cabin and a stolen kiss inspired a night of passion. Ashamed of himself for betraying his boss and taking advantage of Maggie, Ryder hightailed it out of town, not knowing that he left Maggie both heartbroken and pregnant. Five years have passed and Maggie's son, Tex, is the joy of her life. But the bright, charming boy has a reckless streak just like his father's, and his perpetual-motion mischief may be the first signs of a serious attention deficit. When Ryder reappears in town, Maggie has no choice but to confront him, because the secret to her son's future may lie in his father's past. Readers familiar with Karen Wiesner's world will love this version of the "secret baby" story. Fever, Texas, is a wonderful place, and the townspeople and ranchers who populate Ms. Wiesner's Cowboy Fever Series are so real, even the most detached reader will find herself desperately turning the pages to see how the folks of Fever confront and solve very modern problems while still staying true to their old time western values, values like chastity, loyalty and honor. I admit to being a fan of all the books in the Cowboy Fever Series—the books are chock full of sexy cowboys; what's not to love?—but DRIFTER’S HEART is special. The reason: a four year old, whirling dervish named Tex. Maggie and Ryder's love story is passionate and heartwarming. A reader can't help but worry as they struggle to overcome the mistakes of their past and cheer as they strive to rise above them to build a life together for themselves and their son. The stronger, deeper and even more moving love in DRIFTER’S HEART, though, is Maggie's love for Tex. Ms. Wiesner draws an exquisite portrait of a child with ADHD and the heartbreaking decisions Maggie faces mirror those of all parents who discover the child they love literally can't sit still. Please don't miss DRIFTER’S HEART. Buy the book for the wonderful romance between Maggie May and her sexy cowboy. Keep it for Tex.” ~Award-winning author Carrie S. Masek http://www.masek.net/
