What I'm Reading in 2012

Below, you can find out what I'm currently reading this year.

1) 1/1/12-1/5/12: Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling {YA fantasy} (Note: I re-read the Harry Potter Series about twice a year. I could hardly wait to start it again this year.)

2) 1/1/12-1/12/12: Ecclesiastes (in The Message Bible) (Note: I like to try different versions of the Bible. Last year was the Archaeological NIV and the NLT. Starting with this one in 2012.)

3) 1/5/12-1/9/12: Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling {YA fantasy}

4) 1/9/12-1/12/12: Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling {YA fantasy}

5) 1/12/12-?: Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling {YA fantasy}

6) 1/13/12-1/20/12: Song of Songs (in The Message Bible)

10) 1/25/12-2/1/12: Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling {YA fantasy}

11) 2/1/12-2/5/12: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl {biography} (Note: Some friends of mine were in a play based on this book. After seeing it, I really wanted to re-read a book I’d first read when I was a kid.)

12) 2/5/12-2/14/12: One, Two, Buckle My Shoe by Agatha Christie {cozy mystery} (Note: My favorite mystery author and my all-time favorite sleuth, Hercule Poirot.)

13) 2/14/12-2/16/12: Nonprofit Kit for Dummies by Stan Hutton and Frances Phillips {reference} (Note: Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to do the necessary research while outlining DESTINY and so I’m doing it now. Grimace. I rarely enjoy reading nonfiction books.)

14) 2/15/12-3/14/12: Acts (in The Message Bible)

15) 2/16/12: The Frog Prince by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable} (Note: I’m always looking for inspiration for my Woodcutter’s Grim Series from fairy tales, mythology, etc.so I read a lot of these and collect the compilations.)

16) 2/16/12: The Giant and the Tailor by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

17) 2/16/12: The Little Farmer by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

18) 2/16/12: The Golden Key by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

19) 2/16/12: Sharing Joy and Sorrow by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable} (Note: What a horrible story…and yet may be something I can work with…)

20) 2/16/12: The Nail by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

21) 2/16/12: Tom Thumb by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

22) 2/16/12: Tom Thumb’s Travels by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

23) 2/16/12: The Young Giant by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

24) 2/16/12: Sweet Porridge by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

25) 2/16/12: The Elves by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

26) 2/16/12: Fair Katrinelie and Pif-Paf-Poltire by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

27) 2/16/12: The Old Beggar Woman by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

28) 2/16/12: The Jew Among Thorns by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

29) 2/16/12: King Thrush Beard by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

30) 2/16/12: Fitcher’s Bird by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

31) 2/17/12: The Robber Bridegroom by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable} (Note: This story and the last one are similar and horribly inspiring.)

32) 2/17/12: Old Hildebrand by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

33) 2/17/12: The Singing Bone by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

34) 2/17/12: Mad Maleen by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

35) 2/18/12: The Skillful Huntsman by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

36) 2/18/12: The Princess in Disguise by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable}

37) 2/18/12: Cinderella by the Brothers Grimm {fairy tale/fable} (Note: This is a very unique version of the old fairy tale. Gives me ideas.)

38) 2/18/12-2/23/12: The Woman in Black by Susan Hill {gothic ghost story} (Note: I watched the movie on February 18th with a very non-Harry Potter like Daniel Radcliffe and loved it. The book is very different from the movie and both are excellent, though I prefer the ending in the book to the one in the movie.)

39) 2/21/12-2/23/12: Pearls by Lisa Mills {inspirational romantic suspense} (Note: A final read-through for my critique partner. Excellent book.)

40) 2/23/12-2/25/12: Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier {historical fiction} (Note: I wanted to love this like I did her first four books, but I never recovered after finding out there were two female main characters, both in first person POV. A bit awkward.)

41) 2/26/12-3/1/12: The Secret of Chimneys by Agatha Christie {cozy mystery} (Note: I’ve read all but about 10 books by this author, and I guess it had to happen. I didn’t like this one at all. The “political intrigue” that bogged down the first couple chapters ruined the rest of the book for me.)

42) 3/1/12-3/3/12: Dear John by Nicolas Sparks {mainstream fiction} (Note: My sister recommended this one to me, with reservations. While the romance was as bad and frustrating as I expected, I enjoyed the story of the hero and his dad.)

43-46) 3/3/12: The Wednesday Witch, What the Witch Left, and Witch’s Brook by Ruth Chew {childrens/YA fantasy} (Note: These are old childhood favorites of mind that are hard to come by. I managed to find them in a used bookstore.)

47) 3/4/12-3/6/12: “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons” from The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle {mystery novella} (Note: My third favorite detective after Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. I’ve been reading through his collected works a second time for the past year or so, reading a few short stories here and there when I’m in the mood.)

48) 3/6/12: “The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez” from The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle {mystery novella}

49) 3/6/12: “The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter” from The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle {mystery novella}

50) 3/6/12: “The Adventure of the Abbey Grange” from The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle {mystery novella}

51) 3/6/12: “The Adventure of the Second Stain” from The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle {mystery novella}

52) 3/7/12-3/11/12: Vampires, Win, and Roses: Chilling Tales of Immortal Pleasure edited by John Richard Stephens {vampire compilation} (Note: Although this collection contains 35 “entries”, I hesitate to list them as more than one here, considering the eclectic mix—song lyrics, snippets of plays, excerpts, unfinished books, essays, and, of course, short stories. Extremely enjoyable for anyone who loves paranormal. I particularly enjoyed the Anne Rice short (so atmospheric) and the H.G. Wells story that I believe may have been a precursor to one of my favorite books/movies of all time, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.)

53) 3/11/12-3/14/12: The Man in the Picture by Susan Hill {ghost story} (Note: Loved the last one I read of hers, so I thought I’d try another one. Loved it.)

54) 3/14/12-3/15/12: The Vow by Dana Wilkerson {true romance} (Note: I was intrigued by the trailers for the movie--married a couple months, then the car accident that causes the heroine to forget the hero, but the book execution isn't terribly appealing. Didn’t enjoy this.)

55) 3/15/12-3/29/12: Romans (in The Message Bible)

56) 3/15/12-3/18/12: Follow me by Jan David Hettinga {Christian living/nonfiction} (Note: Necessary reading for Christians of all religions and stages of their walk with the Lord.)

57) 3/19/12-3/24/12: Cherry Hill’s Horsekeeping Almanac {reference} (Note: Necessary research for DRIFTER’S HEART.)

58) 3/24/12-3/26/12: Ranch Horsemanship by Curt Pate {reference} (Note: Necessary research for DRIFTER’S HEART.)

59) 3/26/12-3/30/12: Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn {a ghost story} (Note: I’m really into ghost stories lately. This was YA and not scary enough for me, but I suppose I would have loved it as a kid.)

60) 3/29/12-4/15/12: 1 Corinthians (in The Message Bible)

61) 3/30/12-4/2/12: Hell House by Richard Matheson {ghost horror} (Note: His book I Am Legend is one of my favorite books, so I thought I’d try another he’s written, especially this one is going along with my continued craving for really good, horrifying ghost stories. Unfortunately, this book was sexually gratuitous for absolutely no good reason that I could see, and that aspect certainly didn’t make it scary, though I suspect it was intended to. Didn’t enjoy this book at all. Very disappointing since I’d heard it touted as the ultimate scary ghost story.)

62) 4/2/12-4/3/12: The Secret of Shadow Ranch, Nancy Drew Mysteries #5 by Carolyn Keene {ya mystery} (Note: I just played the computer game for the third time and thought I’d read the book.)

63) 4/3/12-4/8/12: The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare {gothic romantic suspense} (Note: I love gothic romance, especially the older stuff, and I honestly don’t know what I was expecting, but what I got wasn’t at all ideal. Well-written, yes. Not really my cup of tea though.)

64) 4/8/12-4/11/12: Chamber of Horrors by Bruce Coville {ya horror} (Note: Something I think I read as a teenager.)

65) 4/11/12-4/15/12: The Help by Kathryn Stockett {early 1960s novel} (Note: Had two people recommend this book. For a first novel, not bad and well-written with solid voices, but I can’t imagine what the author was thinking in using first person POV for all of the main characters. Not just a little confusing! Plus, I kept wondering throughout reading the book what the author’s point was in connecting all these seemingly random lives. I didn’t actually come to a definitive conclusion about that by the time I finished.)

66) 4/16/12-4/25/12: 2 Corinthians (in The Message Bible)

67) 4/16/12-4/20/12: Partners in Crime by Agatha Christie {A Tommy & Tuppence Beresford Mystery} (Note: Loved everything about this. A bunch of mini-mysteries with an overarching main mystery. I loved the back-and-forth between this couple.)

68) 4/21/12-4/26/12: The Screaming Skull and Other Classic Horror Stories compiled by Michael Kelahan {horror} (Note: Of a technicality, there are 30 stories in this compilation from authors like Lovecraft, Poe and Hawthorne but I’m including the volume as one to simplify, since I’ll read it straight through.)

69) 4/26/12-4/30/12: Galatians (in The Message Bible)

70) 4/26/12-4/29/12: Null and Void, Book 1 of the Shadowed Hearts Series by Jane Toombs {gothic romance} (Note: Jane is a close friend of mine, but long before I ever met her, I was reading her gothic paranormal horror romances. Love, love, love them!)

71) 4/29/12-4/30/12: Ghost Hotel by Larry Weinberg {YA ghost story}

72) 4/30/12-5/1/12: Nurse at the Castle by Joanne Holden {gothic romance}

73) 5/1/12-5/6/12: Ephesians (in The Message Bible)

74) 5/2/12-5/7/12: Parker Pyne Investigates by Agatha Christie{cozy mystery collection} (Note: Loved this.)

75) 5/7/12-5/9/12: Philippians (in The Message Bible)

76) 5/8/12-5/17/12: The Body Snatcher and Other Classic Ghost Stories compiled by Michael Kelahan {ghost stories} (Note: Of a technicality, there are 29 stories in this compilation from authors like Lovecraft, Dickens, Doyle, Stoker, Wharton and Kipling, but I’m including the volume as one to simplify, since I’ll read it straight through.)

77) 5/10/12-5/12/12: Colossians (in The Message Bible)

78) 5/13/12-5/16/12: 1 Thessalonians (in The Message Bible)

79) 5/17/12-5/16/12: 2 Thessalonians (in The Message Bible)

80) 5/17/12-5/19/12: The Ruins by Scott Smith {horror} (Note: This is one of my favorite horror novels of all time. I’ve read it four times now and always read it within a day or two because it’s written without actual chapters, just breaks, and I literally can’t put it down. My only complaint is the end. I believe in having heroes triumph in the end. This is the exact opposite. The reader leaves horrified, dejected, and disillusioned that man can overcome evil. Yet I have to read it at least once a year.)

81) 5/17/12-5/19/12: 2 Thessalonians (in The Message Bible)

82) 5/20/12-5/?/12: 1 Timothy (in The Message Bible)

83) 5/20/12-5/21/12: Burgher and the Woebegone by Kim Chatel {ya choose your own adventure} (Note: Guardian Angel Books will be publishing Books 1 and 2 in my Making Good Choices Series in choose your own adventure formats later in the year, so I wanted to see how they laid it out in this other book of that type published by them.)

84) 5/21/12-5/22/12: Mischievous Music Duet by Jane Toombs {two regency romance novellas}

85) 5/23/12-5/24/12: The Doll in the Garden by Mary Downing Hahn {young adult ghost story}

86) 5/24/12-5/?/12: The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn {young adult ghost story}
