Ukraine in WWII

  • In 1941 all of Ukraine fell under the Germans' control when the Nazis invaded the USSR.

  • In the early 1940s the Ukrainska Povstanska Armiia (UPA), otherwise known as the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, was formed in Western Ukraine and fought the Soviets, Nazis and Poles.

  • Millions of Ukrainians died in the war. By the end of World War II, the Red Army reoccupied Ukraine.

  • 1945 -Stalin occupied most of Western Ukraine into the Ukrainian SSR. Many mass arrests followed in the western territories.

  • The Ukrainian Catholic Church was officially abolished in 1946.
