In 1941 all of Ukraine fell under the Germans' control when the Nazis invaded the USSR.
In the early 1940s the Ukrainska Povstanska Armiia (UPA), otherwise known as the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, was formed in Western Ukraine and fought
the Soviets, Nazis and Poles.
Millions of Ukrainians died in the war. By the end of World War II, the Red Army reoccupied Ukraine.
1945 -Stalin occupied most of Western Ukraine into the Ukrainian SSR. Many mass arrests followed in the western territories.
The Ukrainian Catholic Church was officially abolished in 1946.
