Ukraine's National Revival

Soon after Catherine the Great destroyed Cossackdom, an cultural national revival began in Eastern Ukraine with the appearance of Ivan Kotliarevskyj's Eneida in 1798, the first piece of literature written in the Ukrainian language. In the 1820s and 1830s, the Romantic School in Kharkiv University set the foundations for Ukrainian literature and studies.
