‘Frida’: A Work of Art
By: Jackie Nguyen
Editor-in-chief of the Wagnerian
"Crying within the first ten minutes can only mean one of two things: that I’m a big wuss or that the movie was that damn good. I’d like to say it was a combination of the two. Salma Hayek (playing Frida Kahlo) and Alfred Molina (playing Diego Rivera) were absolutely stellar in their portrayal of the greatest artists in the past century.
The passion, sorrow, and beauty that is expressed in this movie is beyond words. Innovative directing by Julie Taymor merged the artwork of Kahlo and Diego seamlessly into the story line of the film. With each scene was full of content and meaning there was an unrealities clarity in the portrayal of Kahlo’s struggle through life and her relationship with Diego.
Leon Trotsky and Nelson Rockefeller make cameo appearances in the film (Geoffrey Rush and Edward Norton respectively). While other small roles were played by Antonio Banderas and Ashley Judd. The film was able to document not only the lives of two legendary artists, but also includes hints of the Russian revolution, the political tumult of Mexico, and the beginning of the sexual revolution."
