"The Way I Am" has a very unorthodox feeling overall. I wasn't there of course, but this album sounds as if it were initially a 'tribute album' to Ernest Tubb and Floyd Tillman. Even the songs that were penned at time of release were written in the style of Tubb and Tillman giving further evidence of the 'tribute' theory. It's apparent to me that Merle wanted to release 2 separate albums here instead of the one giving this a totally uneven listening experience.

The title track, "Wake Up" and "Life's Just Not The Way It Used To Be" sound as if they were meant for an entirely different album. The remaining tracks are undeniably a 'tribute' to Tubb and Tillman. Why is this important? Well, either do a 'tribute' album or don't, but combining the 2 makes this one of my least favorites.
