The unassuming title doesn't do this superb recording justice. We are introduced to classics such as "Old Man From The Mountain", Holding Things Together" and "Things Aren't Funny Anymore". The only hiccup here Ronnie Reno's vocals on "Travelin'". I've never been a fan of duets and this one is no exception. Ronnie was a fine songwriter and great friend of Merle's, however we're paying to see the main event, so let's leave the vocals to the master please :) On another note, this would be the 'official' beginning to the 'horn era' for Merle. From this moment forward Merle would incorporate trumpets and saxaphones into most of his recordings, studio or live. Also you may ask why Capitol lists this as Merle's 30th album yet it's only #28 here on Merle Haggard Discography Simplified? The short answer is that Capitol is including the 5 Strangers instrumental albums along with "Close-up" aka "Sing A Sad Song-High On A Hilltop" and "The Best Of Merle Haggard" from 1968. Either way it's truly amazing that an artist would ever have enough marketability or material to issue 30 albums in only 10 years!!! At the time of this writing (April 2012) Merle has a total of 78 studio albums under his belt. The opinions above are solely those of Sound_man73. If you're like me you'll collect the music either way :) Be sure to check out Merle Haggard's Official Site! |
