Merle introduced a new generation to the music of Jimmie Rodgers with this recording!

Haggard would soon pay homage to other influences (Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell, Ernest Tubb, Floyd Tillman & Hank Williams) with upcoming tribute albums, but "Same Train, Different Time" was the first, and I am thankful.

The entire recording is superbly performed and mastered allowing the listener to just sit back and relax. There would be 2 other reissues of this material (see below), however, the tracks included in the original Capitol© LP were flawlessly ordered giving this a "lazy Sunday afternoon" listening experience.

No Haggard collection would be complete without this one!!!

It can be a bit confusing when collecting this album. There are 3 known versions on the market.

#1 is the original Capitol Records © double-LP containing 20 tracks. Merle's 'narrations' were included within the 20 tracks.

#2 is a release from Germany's Bear Family © from 1993 containing 29 tracks. The Bear Family© version starts with the previously unissued "Jimmie The Kid" from the original recordings. Track #2 "My Rough And Rowdy Way" is included as well. Tracks #3-#27 are identical to the original LP in order assigning Merle's 'narrations' as separate tracks. This issue ends with "Mississippi Delta Blues" & Gamblin' Polka Dot Blues" both of which were released on Merle's 1976 release of "The Roots Of My Raising".

#3 was released by Koch Records© in 1995 containing 25 tracks. Koch includes the original Capitol Records© LP in its entirety with Merle's 'narrations' assigned their own tracks.

Option #2 is by far the best value for collectors considering it contains 4 of the original recordings not included by Capitol Records©. However, Capitol's version has a seamless flow because it omits the seemingly 'out of place' tracks included with The Bear Family© release.
