Three Generations

In every society, a different type of initiation occurs. An initiation is a ceremony, ritual, test, or period of instruction with which a new member is admitted to an organization or office or to knowledge. It can also be something that takes place which leads to a new beginning. Many initiations deal with becoming someone of higher status, like an adult that has matured and has grown up. To some, it is graduating high school that makes them an official adult. In many Spanish countries, turning fifteen years old is the transition from being a girl to a woman. For Jews, boys become men during a Bar Mitzvah ceremony.

I have done some research within the past three generations of my family. I wanted to find out what was the point of initiation in their lives that changed them from being a child, to becoming an adult. I have come to learn the difficult times in their life that has gotten them to where they were. We all had different thoughts of what made each and everyone one of us who we are today, but the most common initiation to adulthood has been moving out and being on your own.
