Grand Dome at the
Chattanooga Choo Choo

The Terminal Station at the Chattanooga Choo Choo was originally built in 1908. Construction had been completed over a year before its opening on December 1, 1909. A dispute between railroad officials and Chattanooga commissioners over railroad crossings on streets near the station was the cause of this dilemma.

The Choo Choo’s Grand Dome, which was covered by a false ceiling before its revealing, is freestanding and rests on four steel posts that are all seventy-five feet apart. This eighty-five foot tall structure is made completely of steel and concrete. Four brass chandeliers hang from its ceiling, and forty lights surround an opal globe, eighteen inches in diameter. The Grand Dome currently serves as the ceiling to the lobby of the Choo Choo Holiday Inn. (125 words)
