As a girl of seven, I would massage my mother's feet and back for .50 cents an hour. We had a black massager that slipped over your hand with coiled wires on the bottom and the vibrating engine on top. After a few minutes you had a red-hot, pulsating hand that was going to itch like crazy once the massager was removed. This ritual was a beginning for me, although I was not aware of it at the time.
In third and fourth grade, I set my sights on becoming a teacher. I eventually fulfilled this dream by graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a Master's degree in counseling.
However, my course changed and I spent the next twenty years in the healthcare field of dentistry.
As I have traveled different paths in life on the quest to find my purpose I discovered a common theme, I was sharing my gifts to help others. However, I did not feel complete or satisfied. Something was not quite right. That "something" was the realization that you cannot just educate the mind, treat the body, or heal the spirit, that as it is in nature with the circle of life's it is with us, our mind, body, and spirit are interrelated. As a result, I have developed the philosophy, "Mind, body, and spirit are all one package."
In 1998 I graduated from the Massage Institute of Memphis. The healer inside was awakened and the teacher continued to learn. I have studied anatomy of the body and incorporate the many techniques I have learned over the years. I became a certified LaStone therapist two years ago. I also do "Stepping Stones to Reiki".
I own A Touch of Tranquility in Cordova, TN. As a therapeutic massage therapist I work with a wide range of problems. I am a facilitator for helping others heal themselves, not a luxury. In the end, or rather, a new beginning, I have found my purpose. I offer my gifts of touch and teaching with unconditional love to the mind, body, and spirit to all who come.
Now at the end of a massage when my hands are red-hot and pulsating and sometimes itching like crazy, I know it's not because I used my mother's massager, but universal energy and love coming from my body as my gift to you.
