The story starts off with Jacqueline, Steven, and David who are all teenage friends. Steven and Jacqueline are a couple. David is the smartest of his friends. Steven works as a chauffeur for a rich man. As a result of money problems, Steven, David and 2 more buddies decide to kidnap Steven’s boss’s son for ransom. Their plans fall through and they are caught. Steven and the 2 buddies manage to escape. David gets caught and is sent to juvenile hall.

In jail, there is a counselor who sees a possible future for David. He believes David is not really as bad as most teenagers who end up in jail. He sees a gentle side of David when David’s grandmother visits him. He encourages David to take classes while in jail to finish up high school. Two years pass and David is released from jail. As a result of good grades he was able to enroll in small college.

All through this time, Jacqueline has kept in touch with David. She begins to like him as more than just a friend but David rejects her. Even though they cannot be a couple, they still remained very good friends. Also, some strange circumstances led to David becoming good friends with the cop, Lau Kong, that arrested him.

At David’s first real job in a prestigious company, he meets Maggie. She is his superior. She is young but because of hard work and her savvy business skills, she moved up the corporate ladder quickly. Maggie is all business and no play. Maggie sees David as someone who isn’t serious about what he does. However, he proves to everyone that he is able to handle the work. Their boss soon puts Maggie and David to work on several projects together.

Jacqueline decides to join a beauty pageant but loses. She had a son with Steven as a teenager before he ran off. The fact that she was a single mother was discovered by the press and she was disqualified from the pageant. Lau Kong was the one who revealed her single mother status to the press. Afterwards, Lau Kong felt guilty and wanted to make it up to Jacqueline. At first she treated him harshly. Jacqueline has had lots of bad luck with men and after knowing Lau Kong for some time, she began to accept him as a boyfriend and possible husband even though he was much older than herself.

Maggie and David had grown closer as a result of working together. They started off with a good relationship. As they grew closer they began to realize that their personalities were not compatible. Maggie was a very serious person, not just when it came to work but in her personal life too. David had more of a carefree personality. They decided to end their relationship as a result of these differences. Even after their relationship ended they still had feelings for each other.

David had gotten more involved with his work. He soon discovered that his boss was not a straight business man. His boss had always been involved in illegal business dealings. David and Maggie had began to realize this. Maggie had work with this boss for many years and helped him build the company to where it was today. Finding out that most of his business dealings were done illegally devastated her. The boss would only let Maggie deal with the legitimate side of his business. Therefore, she was oblivious to his illegal business ventures. David and Maggie decided to leave their positions at the company.

Steven returned to Hong Kong in search of the diamond necklace that he managed to hide before he escaped all those years ago. He had hidden the necklace somewhere in Jacqueline’s house. He pretended that he was back because he wanted to take care of Jacqueline and their son. At first he played it cool but soon he got very aggressive in trying to find the necklace, he blew his own cover. Jacqueline’s family, David and Lau Kong were soon on to Steven’s true intentions. Jacqueline’s younger brother discovered an old photo with something strange in the background. They all deduced that Steven was back for another reason and not for Jacqueline and their son.
