28/10/01 Michael Jackson Online Audio Chat

Michael Jackson answered questions from fans during an online audio chat that took place on Friday, October 26 at 7:00 PM ET. The hour-long chat, presented by GetMusic.com and RollingStone.com, was hosted by music writer/critic Anthony DeCurtis. Fans had an opportunity to ask questions during the live chat, with DeCurtis posing fans' questions, as well as his own. Jackson was very relaxed, open, thoughtful, and funny during the interview, often taking time to answer questions at length to explain or emphasize points. Highlights of what Michael Jackson said during the chat:

His favorite songs from Invincible are Unbreakable, Speechless, and Lost Children.

You Rock My World video was a lot of fun to make, staying up all night, laughing, music playing very loud.

He wrote many, many songs to get to the final 16 that are on Invincible.

Describing his working process on an album, he said that sometimes he writes 10-12 songs, only to throw them all away and start over.

Speaking of perfecting the sound on his recordings, he said that he sometimes makes the musicians do something 100 or 1000 times to make it the best it can be. They may get angry at him, only to telephone later and admit that his insistence brought out the best in their performance.

Ghosts will be released in the USA on DVD, including the Making of Ghosts.

Which song on Invincible do you relate the most? Unbreakable, because "I've been through so many things.... but nothing or no one can stop me until I am ready to stop."

"We will be releasing surprise singles, but that's in the future."

A tour is currently not in the works but there may be something in the future.

"Being off stage is difficult for me. Being on stage or writing music or writing poetry, or watching cartoons is what brings me to life."

He loves the cover of Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm. "I fell in love with it. They wanted my permission. I heard it and gave it a triple A." [Jackson owns the copyright for the song, thus the permission is required].

He is a huge fan of Chris Tucker. "He makes me laugh so hard. I like people that make you laugh without vulgarity."

What inspired Speechless: "I spend a lot of time in the forest. I like to go into the forest. I like to climb trees, my favored thing is to climb trees, go all the way to the top and look down on the branches. Whenever I do that, it inspires me to write music. There were these two sweet little kids, a girl and a boy, they are so innocent, they are the quintessential form of innocence. Just being in their presence, I felt completely speechless, I felt I was in the presence of God, whenever I saw them.... and that inspired me to write Speechless."

He promises to introduce new and innovative moves and dances in the new short films that are coming up. "Things that have never been seen before. We'll be going to places that we never gone or danced before". He added that "all the hip-hop things that are happening now is beginning to look like aerobics. It's getting kinda annoying."

If he could do a duet with someone from the past, he said it would be people like Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole. From present artists, he named Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand.

The "Nightmare of Edgar Allan Poe" movie is still coming up, Jackson said. He will star in the title role. He added, "it's about the great, prolific American writer, Edgar Allan Poe. He was very diabolical, very dark, but he was a genius. But his personal life was very interesting and that's what it's about. What he had to go through to create such genious work."

The charity single "What More Can I Give?" will be released "very, very soon. We're putting the finishing touches on it now."

He is planning to dress up as a monster and go trick or treating on Halloween. "I was going to go and knock on some doors and get candy....nobody knows it's me."

The complete audio chat has been archived on getmusic.com and may still be heard in its entirety via RealPlayer. Go to http://www.getmusic.com and click on "Hear It Now".

Michael will release the single in both English and Spanish versions of the song. The following artists have participated in studio recordings *NSync, Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Carlos Santana, Celine Dion, Tom Petty, Beyonce Knowles of Destiny's Child, Usher, Julio Iglesias, Reba McEntire, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, Luther Vandross, Shakira, Brian McKnight, Gloria Estefan, Mya, Aaron Carter, Hanson, Laura Palcini, John Secada, Billy Gilman, Ruben Blades, Anaida, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Alejandro Sandz, Christian Castro, Olga Tanon, Anastascia, Joy Enriquez, Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, Thalia, Ziggy Marley, and 3LW.

It is time we used that power to help us begin the process of healing immediately,'' he concluded. SOURCE: Susan Blond, Inc.

24/10/01 'NSYNC Join Jackson's Charity Single; Mariah, Celine Sing In Spanish

'NSYNC have joined the star-studded roster for Michael Jackson's charity single "What More Can I Give," whose Latin version will feature Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and the Gloved One testing out their Español.

Though Jackson originally announced only Justin Timberlake's involvement, all five 'NSYNC members recorded their vocals in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, the day before JC Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick debuted the ballad live with Jackson, Carey, Mya and several others at a benefit concert at RFK Stadium.

Proceeds from "What More Can I Give" will go to September 11 relief efforts, but Jackson's reps have not announced what organizations will receive the funds. Both the English and Spanish versions of the song are expected to be completed by the end of the week, according to KC Porter, who is producing the Spanish version and assisting Jackson in producing the English version.

"It really is the same feeling you get from 'We Are the World,'" Porter said Monday, referring to the 1985 charity single that benefited famine-relief efforts in Ethiopia. That song featured hordes of pop stars recruited by the song's writers — Jackson, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Harry Belafonte.

"The feeling that I'm getting from everyone is they want to do what they can do whole-heartedly, selflessly. The whole vibe of the artistic community has changed — it's not only about 'me' anymore, it's about what we can all do to provide for the whole of humanity. It's an awakening."

Porter initially translated the song's title literally for the Spanish version but changed it to "Todo Para Ti" ("Everything for You") after Jackson vetoed the directly translated title as sounding too clumsy. Though the tracks are more or less the same musically, only a handful of stars will do double-duty and appear on both the English and Spanish versions. They include Jackson, Carey, Dion, Gloria Estefan, Carlos Santana, Ricky Martin and Jon Secada. Porter currently has 'NSYNC framing Jackson's lyrics in the chorus of the English version, but the mix is pending Jackson's approval. The producer also may place them in the background on the Spanish version, though the boy band only recorded the lyrics in English.

Jackson and Porter have been flying around the country over the past few weeks to record with the different contributors, and the sessions have been videotaped for a music video. A video shoot was planned for Monday but fell through, Porter said.

Also among the artists slated to appear on the songs, according Jackson's reps, are: Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter, Tom Petty, Shakira, Usher, Julio Iglesias, Reba McEntire, Luther Vandross, Brian McKnight, Aaron Carter, Billy Gilman, Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman, Alejandro Sanz, Christian Castro, Olga Tañón, Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, Thalía, Ziggy Marley and 3LW.

Porter said he's still hopeful to place a few more artists on the song, citing a wish list of Toni Braxton, Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin. Jackson's people initially named Britney Spears as a participant, but she was never confirmed, a source close to the project said.

23/10/01 "United We Stand: What More Can I Give?" Concert Raised $3 Million To Date

"The United We Stand: What More Can I Give?" benefit concert raised around $3 million dollars from ticket sales, with additional funds to be raised during the show's televised special. Lasting over 11 hours, the concert played to a capacity crowd of 46,000 at the RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, October 21, 2001, with the participation of numerous artists. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Relief Fund, the Pentagon Relief Fund, and the Salvation Army Relief Fund to benefit the victims of September 11 terrorist attacks.

The Backstreet Boys kicked off the show at 1 PM, followed (not necessarily in this order) by James Brown, Carole King, Al Green, Pink, N'Sync, Mariah Carey, Bette Midler, Aerosmith, Rod Stewart, R. Diddy Combs, Destiny's Child, Train, Faith Evans, Huey Lewis & the News, Usher, Billy Gilman, Mya, Fabulous, Ce Ce Peniston, America, Goo Goo Dolls, and others.

Michael Jackson was the last solo artist to perform, entering the stage after being introduced by comedian Chris Tucker. Singing "Man in the Mirror," Jackson climbed aboard a cherry picker and waved the American flag, as he was lifted over the audience. At one point, he asked the crowd to join hands, adding "don't do it because I'm asking you but because it's the right thing to do." He then said, "Tonight we all stand united and ask, what more can I give? To the families of the victims of September 11 that are here with us tonight, you are not alone. You are in our hearts, you are in our thoughts, and you are in our prayers."

The concert ended with Jackson leading many of the event's participating artists in an all-star finale of his new charity song "What More Can I Give?" The song will also be released as a single to raise funds for charity.

The "United We Stand" concert will raise additional money for the three charities, when it is broadcast in a two-hour television special on November 1, 2001 (8 PM ET) on ABC in the USA. The television presentation will feature highlights from the concert, including performances by Michael Jackson. The show will close as the concert did, with "What More Can I Give" finale. During the broadcast, donations will be solicited from viewers through a toll-free number and a web site.

    22/10/01 D.C. "United"

One night after rock legends stormed Madison Square Garden, another batch of music heavyweights converged on RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., Sunday to ask, "What more can I give?"

The answer, quite simply, was another marathon day of spirit-lifting music, from the Backstreet Boys' a cappella "Star Spangled Banner," to Aerosmith's stadium-rumbling rendition of "Walk This Way" and a late-late-night finale debuting Michael Jackson's "We Are the World"-style benefit single, "What More Can I Give?"

Flanked onstage by 'N Sync, Mya, Mariah Carey and little country crooner Billy Gilman, the Gloved One led performers in a not-exactly polished version of his new come-together anthem to wrap up United We Stand: What More Can I Give?, the Jackson-headlined D.C. benefit for relief from the September 11 attacks.

Jackson sang just one song on his own--a performance of "Man in the Mirror," during which the pop star draped himself in an American flag while a platform raised him over the crowd. But he then quickly shifted attention to his new single.

"Tonight we all stand united and ask, 'What more can I give?' " Jackson said. "To the families of the victims of September 11 that are here with us tonight, you are not alone. You are in our hearts, you are in our thoughts and you are in our prayers."

The new tune didn't exactly come off as planned: Singers flubbed the verses, and technical glitches drowned out everything but the overpowering chorus. But their heart was in the right place, as Sunday's show helped calm the nerves of the nation's capital and drew a crowd of 47,100 flag-waving music buffs.

Other performers included James Brown, 'N Sync, Bette Midler, Usher, O-Town, Rod Stewart, Carole King, Billy Gilman, Al Green, Train, Destiny's Child, Mariah Carey and the Goo Goo Dolls.

Of course, those who didn't appear Sunday could at least take comfort that their music was probably sampled by Sean "P.Diddy" Combs, whose red, white and blue-loving set actually turned into one of the night's most rousing performances.

Dressed in military fatigues, the rap mogul opened his set with images of U.S. fighter jets and the flag-raising at Iwo Jima, with the crowd chiming in during one of his newest tracks--giving patriotic new meaning to his Bad Boy battle cry, "We ain't goin' nowhere."

In true cheerleader fashion, the Puffster then managed to pump up the crowd by simply playing clips of Queen's "We Will Rock You" and Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A" while leading them in the wave. He closed by launching into the Zeppelin-riffing "Come with Me," before a gospel choir joined him onstage for "I'll Be Missing You," his tribute to the victims of the terror attacks.

Sunday's concert raised at least $2 million for the Pentagon Relief Fund, the American Red Cross Liberty Relief Fund and Salvation Army Relief Fund, all of which are aiding recovery from the September 11 attacks. The concert, produced with radio giant Clear Channel Entertainment, will also be edited into a two-hour broadcast to be aired November 1 on ABC and hosted by Thieves star John Stamos.

Of course, those ABC editors will have plenty to sift through. Sunday's show dragged more than three hours past its scheduled 9 p.m. wrapup--no thanks to the time-consuming stage prep between performances. RFK Stadium began to empty even before many of the final acts hit the stage, and the delays prompted some scattered boos toward the end of the night.

But for the most part, the weary crowd kept in good spirits. Earlier in the day, Stamos was joined onstage by surprise guest Kevin Spacey, who reminded them "we're sending the best message we can possibly send--that America is alive and well."

Aerosmith proved its commitment to the nation's capital, chartering a plane to get in and out of D.C. in time for a show later that night in Indianapolis. Due to scheduling conflicts, the group initially considered performing via satellite from Indiana. But they opted against it.

"We've just gotta get off the stage as quick as we can," frontman Steven Tyler said backstage. Despite the tight deadline, the Boston boys stuck around long enough to churn through "Livin' on the Edge," "Don't Want to Miss a Thing," "Just Push Play" and "Walk This Way," bringing the roaring crowd to its feet. Tyler even ripped through a couple lines of "America the Beautiful." "We've got something you can't kill," he shrieked. "Freedom, love, God, liberty and the pursuit of rock 'n' roll!"

Other highlights Sunday included a blonde Pink--who changed not only her hair color but her entire musical image, as the R&B pop diva perched herself on a stool and, with a lone guitarist, pounded out two powerful acoustic rock songs: "My Vietnam," an emotional tune from her new album Misundaztood and a cover of Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee."

"Sing along if you know the words," she told the crowd, perhaps confounding her teeny-bopper fan base as they watched their parents join Pink in crooning the "la-la la, la-la" refrain.

Meanwhile, Bette Midler covered "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"; Al Green was in spirited form for "Let's Stay Together"; and James Brown couldn't have picked a better time to sweat and grind to his modern patriotic classic "Living in America."

But in another tough break for Mariah Carey, the recovering songbird struggled through her performance, as she seemed incapable of hitting the high notes on her hits "Never Too Far" and "Hero."

For his part, Rod Stewart rocked the crowd with "Hot Legs," while images of World War II pinups flashed behind him. As the night's lone British act, the raspy-voiced Rock Hall of Famer also dedicated "Rhythm of My Heart" "to the Allies."

Earlier Sunday, Carole King enlisted the help of Stewart's back-up band for songs such as "Monday Without You." King told reporters backstage that she was not only in New York on September 11, but also in the Hart Building on Capitol Hill during the recent anthrax exposure.

"I've been tested for anthrax," the singer-songwriter acknowledged. "I don't have my results back, but I'm taking my Cipro."

Despite the scare, she and other artists emphasized that the weekend concerts in New York and D.C. were not just fundraisers, but opportunities for Americans to show their solidarity. "When you see 50,000 people in the stands…they're making a statement," said 'N Sync-er JC Chasez. "They're not going to be bullied into their homes." KOP Discussion

22/10/01 Michael Jackson Unites Music Industry

The sold-out United We Stand: What More Can I Give benefit concert took place in Washington DC last night to raise money for victims of last month's terrorist attacks. A star-studded list of performers including Michael Jackson, Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys, Aerosmith, Mariah Carey and James Brown.

Not everything went smoothly on the night however and reporters suggested that the sensitive egos of some popstars were clear just below the surface of the camaraderie. Apparently Michael Jackson needed his own bathroom, Aerosmith refused to go on after Bette Midler while Sean Combs wouldn't perform unless he could bring his 42-member choir. Then there were rumours that rival boy bands 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys were kept a safe distance from each other at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.

The memorable night began with the Backstreet Boys singing the American national anthem and ended 11 hours later, (the gig was a full three hours more than scheduled), with an allstar line up helping Michael Jackson perform his new benefit song What More Can I Give? under a sea of red, white and blue confetti. 'We can't let them defeat us,' said Kevin Richardson. 'We have to get up, get out and live our lives every day.'

The show also included Usher, Pink, O Town, the Goo Goo Dolls, Rod Stewart and Al Green. 'N Sync performed an acoustic version of their hit Bye Bye Bye while Combs performed in US army fatigues.

Jackson sang just one song on his own, his '80s hit Man In The Mirror, draping himself in an American flag while a platform raised him over the crowd. Then he introduced many of the acts who'd just performed to sing his benefit single United We Stand: What More Can I Give?

He told the crowd, 'Tonight we all stand united and ask, `What more can I give?' To the families of the victims of September 11 that are here with us tonight, you are not alone. You are in our hearts, you are in our thoughts and you are in our prayers.'

While the song was somewhat spoiled by a few technical glitches, and some of Jacko's famous collective backing singers were seen at times to fumble for the right words. Despite this the overpowering chorus carried the message through and it was obviously sung with heartfelt emotion. The concert is expected to raise $2 million to $3 million for the American Red Cross Liberty Relief Fund, the Salvation Army Relief Fund and the Pentagon Relief Fund.

At the request of the White House, the concert's organisers added the Rewards for Justice Fund rewardsfund.org to the list of charitable organizations that will receive proceeds from the event. The fund offers reward payments to identify and apprehend individuals who are planning, or have committed terrorist acts. Worldpop

    22/10/01 United We Stand

America was the star at Sunday's United We Stand: What More Can I Give? During the concert at Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium, artists worked patriotism into their acts, while the audience was awash in bandannas, T-shirts, hats and other gear sporting the Stars and Stripes.

The Backstreet Boys set the tone, opening the show with an a capella Star-Spangled Banner. An American flag waved on a large video screen behind them, while hundreds of smaller ones waved back at them from the crowd. After several familiar hits, Howie Dorough told the crowd that the Sept. 11 tragedy struck home for the band: One of their road crew, Daniel Lee, was on a flight that hit the World Trade Center. The band then did a touching The Answer of Our Life.

What followed was a parade of musical big guns. James Brown stopped the music in mid-Sex Machine to belt out a spare God Bless America as the crowd sang along. 'N Sync got a standing ovation. Janet Jackson popped in via satellite to do All for You. Bette Midler added sentiment (From a Distance) and history (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy).

The marathon of music was scheduled for eight hours but ran nearly 10, with considerable lulls between acts. No one seemed to mind, though. People snapped photos of themselves and the stage with disposable cameras, did the wave and chanted "USA."

For many, celebrating America was the point in the first place. Donneche Robinson of Manassas, Va., said she bought two tickets even though she came alone. "I came out to show my patriotism and because the money is going to the victims of Sept. 11," she said. "And it's a chance to see all of these artists at this historic event."

Proceeds from the event, which sold out 46,000 seats, were to go to American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Pentagon relief funds. An edited version of the concert will air Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

Many of the musicians delivered heartfelt messages in song. Carole King's You're So Far Away went out to people working for the USO and those serving overseas. Al Green's Let's Stay Together, wrapped around a soulful verse of Amazing Grace, was dedicated to families of those who died in the tragedy.

After Huey Lewis & The News energized the crowd with The Heart of Rock & Roll, Lewis said The Power of Love was for the people of New York. Aerosmith dedicated its entire guitar-fueled set, which included Living on the Edge and a stadium-bouncing Walk This Way, to "the real heroes."

Musicians also showed their stripes onstage. P. Diddy wore military garb while singing Bad Boy for Life, We Will Rock You and I'll Be Missing You. And Destiny's Child belted out their hit Survivor while clad in starred-and-striped pants.

The lights went down at midnight and strains of the 1985 charity anthem We Are the World signaled Michael Jackson's entrance. When the lights came up, he launched into a 12-minute version of Man in the Mirror, while a montage of world leaders including John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Mother Teresa and Eleanor Roosevelt flashed on the screen. Later, he asked for a moment of love and silence, then said, "When we leave here tonight, take this love and give it to all the people in every corner of the earth." For the finale, he was joined by dozens of celebrities — including Usher, Mariah Carey, Angie Stone and Maya — to sing his new ballad written especially for event, What More Can I Give? 22/10/01 Washington Concert Plays RFK Stadium

'Get up, get out and live our lives'

WASHINGTON (AP) --Tens of thousands of music fans gathered in the capital Sunday to see Michael Jackson, 'N Sync, Aerosmith and an array of other pop stars at a marathon concert to celebrate America and raise money for victims of September's terrorist attacks.

"United We Stand: What More Can I Give?" raised about $2 million through the sale of more than 46,000 tickets. It was one of three benefit concerts over the weekend.

The Backstreet Boys sang the national anthem to kick off the sold-out show at RFK Stadium. "We can't let them defeat us," said band member Kevin Richardson. "We have to get up, get out and live our lives every day."

Dressed in a gold suit, James Brown segued from his classic "Sex Machine" to "God Bless America." The audience sang along to the latter and waved small American flags.

Among the other performers were Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Bette Midler and Destiny's Child. Parts of the concert is scheduled to be televised in a two-hour special on ABC November 1.

Security was tight outside RFK, with long lines forming as police searched concertgoers -- many clad in red, white and blue -- with handheld metal detectors.

Maureen Stuck and John Re attended the benefit concert in New York Saturday night, then took a train down to Washington Sunday morning. "Because of what happened I wanted to show support," said Stuck, who was wearing a souvenir T-shirt from the New York event.

Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Billy Joel headlined the Concert for New York at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. Country music stars Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood and Sara Evans were among those scheduled for Sunday night's Country Freedom Concert at Nashville's Gaylord Entertainment Center.

Proceeds from the Washington concert will go to the American Red Cross Liberty Fund, the Salvation Army Relief Fund, the Pentagon Relief Fund and the Rewards for Justice Fund. a href="http://cnn.com">CNN

22/10/01 KC Porter Producing Todo Para Ti

KC Porter Producing All-Star Single to Benefit Relief Fund for Families of the Victims of the Sept. 11 Disasters Porter to Produce Spanish-Language Version of Michael Jackson's Song ``What More Can I Give'' as Well as Collaborate on English-Language Version With Jackson

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-Oct. 22, 2001-- GRAMMY® Award-winning music producer KC Porter is producing ``Todo Para Ti,'' the Spanish-language version of Michael Jackson's ``What More Can I Give,'' a new song specially written to drive a fundraising campaign for the survivors and families and loved ones of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The recording, which is a ``We Are The World''-style collaboration featuring an all-star chorus of top artists, is underway concurrently with the English-language version of the soon-to-be-released single, on which KC is also a co-producer along with Mark Schaffel, and Michael Jackson himself.

Besides Jackson, participating stars in this bilingual anthem benefit endeavor include Laura Pausini, Carlos Santana, Boyz II Men, Joy Enriquez, Celine Dion, Julio Iglesias, Ruben Blades, Jon Secada, Ricky Martin, Brian McKnight, Mariah Carey, 'N Sync, Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys), Luis Miguel, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Shakira, Luther Vandross, Alejandro Sanz, and Gloria Estefan, with more names being added each day. Porter has been commuting between his home base in Los Angeles and Miami, where much of the work on the historic recording is being done.

Porter commented, ``At a time when it is so essential that people all over the world join together, it is also important to channel the universal language of music to help those most affected by last month's tragic events, as well as to contribute to the healing process for each and every citizen of the globe.''

``What More Can I Give'' mastermind Michael Jackson is expecting that the project will raise upwards of $50 million. He will be personally involved in setting up its distribution and making sure that the usual contractual and legal issues associated with so many high-profile artists will be set aside so that all the proceeds can go toward relief. The now-classic ``We Are The World,'' which Jackson co-wrote, similarly featured a large amassing of pop and rock stars, and has raised more than $65 million for USA for Africa since its 1985 release.

Internationally acclaimed KC Porter is renowned for crossing over top international music artists' work to English-language audiences. Porter has also worked his magic with U.S. stars, making their hits accessible to Spanish-speaking and international audiences. KC is widely known for his long collaborative association with Puerto Rican-born superstar Ricky Martin, as well as for his extensive, award-winning work on the legendary Carlos Santana's record-breaking album ``Supernatural.'' Currently, KC is executive producing Italian diva Laura Pausini's English-language debut album, and he is up for Producer of the Year at the second annual Latin GRAMMYs, which have been postponed because of last month's tragic events.

Porter is also Co-founder and Creative Director of Oneness, a Southern California based non-profit organization with a goal of eliminating racism and promoting racial unity through the healing power of music and the arts via educational outreach, awareness campaigns and collaborative initiatives. 22/10/01 Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, and Michael Jackson

On Monday, October 15, 2001, Quincy Jones appeared on the USA television show "Oprah" (hosted by Oprah Winfrey) to talk about his new autobiography "Q." Michael Jackson joined the interview by telephone.

When asked: "What have you learned from Q that you take with you for the rest of your life, Michael?" he replied, "I learned a lot. You once said something to me, Q...Quincy. I don't know if you want it repeated. But it was just beautiful. You said 'You don't write music. You let the write..the music write itself. Let it create itself. It's like we're just the source from which it comes."

21/10/01 Stars Gather in Benefit Concerts

WASHINGTON –– Tens of thousands of music fans gathered in the capital Sunday to see Michael Jackson, 'N Sync, Aerosmith and an array of other pop stars at a marathon concert to celebrate America and raise money for victims of September's terrorist attacks.

"United We Stand: What More Can I Give?" raised about $2 million through the sale of more than 43,000 $25 to $75 tickets. It was one of three benefit concerts over the weekend.

The Backstreet Boys were going to sing the national anthem to kick off the sold-out show at RFK Stadium. Also performing were Ricky Martin, James Brown, Mariah Carey and Destiny's Child.

Security was tight outside RFK, with long lines forming as police searched concertgoers – many clad in red, white and blue – with handheld metal detectors.

Maureen Stuck and John Re attended the benefit concert in New York Saturday night, then took a train down to Washington Sunday morning. "Because of what happened I wanted to show support," said Stuck, who was wearing a souvenir T-shirt from the New York event.

Jill Beerman and her family flew from Austin, Texas, for the show. She said they had walked past the White House Saturday night. "It just has a new meaning to me," she said.

Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Billy Joel headlined the Concert for New York at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. Promoters said ticket sales for that event had already raised $14 million, with millions more expected from callers who viewed the live broadcast on VH1.

Country music stars Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood and Sara Evans were among those scheduled for Sunday's "Country Freedom Concert" for more than 10,000 fans at Nashville's Gaylord Entertainment Center.

Proceeds from the Washington concert will go to the American Red Cross Liberty Fund, the Salvation Army Relief Fund and the Pentagon Relief Fund. KOP Discussion

21/10/01 Pop Stars Lead Tribute Concert in Washington

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Less than 24 hours after a marathon gig in New York, music stars including Michael Jackson, the Backstreet Boys, and Mariah Carey kicked off a concert in Washington to help lift the spirits of a nation's capital rattled by the Sept. 11 attacks and anthrax.

The Backstreet Boys, the chart-topping boy band, opened the eight-hour fund-raiser before a 46,000 capacity crowd at RFK stadium with their rendition of the national anthem followed by a string of their hit songs.

One of the numbers was dedicated to a member of their tour crew who was aboard one of the hijacked airplanes that slammed into the towers of the World Trade Center, killing more than 4,000 people. The total for the twin towers, the Pentagon and aboard four hijacked planes was about 5,400.

``It's a privilege to be here today to salute all of the heroes,'' Backstreet Boy singer A.J. McLean told the crowd at the ``United We Stand'' charity concert.

Organizers said the concert raised $2 million in ticket sales alone. Patriotism reigned as fans and performers sported American lapel pins, belt buckles and T-shirts, in a bid to perk up the capital traumatized by the aerial attacks and a spate of anthrax cases, the potential germ warfare agent.

Huey Lewis belted out ``The Heart of Rock & Roll'' and dedicated the hit ``The Power of Love'' to New York. ``We send our sympathies and our prayers to the victims and their families,'' Lewis told fans.

The scheduled acts for Sunday's concert ranged from Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, James Brown and Al Green to newcomers 'N Sync, Destiny's Child and Ricky Martin.

The Washington concert swiftly followed an all-star concert on Saturday in New York for firefighters, police officers and rescue workers that featured Paul McCartney, The Who, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Billy Joel and David Bowie and saw appearances by former President Bill Clinton, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and a throng of movie stars.

The weekend pop concerts and a country music charity benefit on Sunday in Nashville, Tennessee are expected to equal or exceed the up to $150 million reportedly raised during the Sept. 21 celebrity telethon ``America: A Tribute to Heroes,'' organized by Hollywood movie stars. KOP Discussion

Since the tragic September 11th attacks, the press and public have been anxiously awaiting details of the much-anticipated recording. While dozens of relief efforts were being announced, Jackson kept "What More Can I Give" in the strictest secrecy as he flew around the country recording the song with music's biggest stars. Now Jackson will release "What More Can I Give" and once again unite the industry in a movement to give.

To date Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Carlos Santana, Celine Dion, Tom Petty, Beyonce Knowles of Destiny's Child, Usher, Julio Iglesias, Reba McEntire, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, Luther Vandross, Shakira, Brian McKnight, Gloria Estefan, Mya, Aaron Carter, John Secada, Billy Gilman, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Alejandro Sandz, Christian Castro, Olga Tanon, Anastascia, Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, Thalia, Ziggy Marley, 3LW and more have recorded the relief song.

With the goal of raising more than $50 million to the families, orphans and survivors of the horrific terrorist attacks, Michael Jackson will release both English and Spanish versions of the song. The song's lyrics seek to help the world's citizens find solace in the wake of the attack on America and to create a sense of global unity.

Mr. Jackson stated, "I believe in my heart that the music community will come together as one and rally to the aid of thousands of innocent victims. There is a tremendous need for relief dollars right now and through this effort each one of us can play an immediate role in helping comfort so many people."

Prior charitable efforts by Mr. Jackson include "We Are the World" which, to date, has raised $65 million to address starvation and hunger in Africa. "We have demonstrated time and again that music can touch our souls. It is time we used that power to help us begin the process of healing immediately," he concluded. KOP Discussion

    14/10/01 Kylie Sees Off Jackson

Michael Jackson's first single for four years has been denied the No 1 spot. Kylie Minogue clung on for a fourth week at the top. Jackson was on target to reach number one at the mid-week point. But Kylie surged ahead over the weekend and claimed the slot yet again with her single Can't Get You Out Of My Head. She also tops the album with Fever. Jackson's record company, Sony, had been hoping his comeback would be marked by a number one single. Kylie's feat in holding him off is all the more remarkable after being in the shops for a month now.

At one point, Jackson had been as much as 2,000 sales ahead of the Aussie singer, but she came back. The lack of a number one may be an omen that Jackson's chart success is on the wane, just weeks before he releases his album Invincible, his first for six years.

The star has become more noted in recent years for his bizarre appearance than as a credible chart star. His last single, History, in 1997, made it to No 5, although that followed a No 1 single, Blood On The Dancefloor, just months earlier.

05/10/01 Michael Jackson Impersonator Arrested At Baseball Game

A Michael Jackson impersonator has been arrested at a baseball game. He persuaded the New York Yankees to let him throw the first pitch. He was arrested after police officers noticed him sitting in the home team's dugout. Frederick Oliverier was arrested along with four other people. The group said they were filming for a show on VH1 called Sledgehammer, according to a police spokeswoman. They had fooled Yankees personnel, who allowed them to pass by a security checkpoint after police denied them access. They were also escorted into the stadium.

New York police were put on alert after hearing earlier in the day that a Michael Jackson impersonator and his entourage had been seen at the Bronx Zoo. The group was escorted out of the home dugout shortly before the Yankees were to play the Chicago White Sox. All five face charges of criminal trespass. Oliverier also faces a charge of false impersonation.
