He finished high school one year early and he and his best friend Trevor went on a road trip to Sydney in search of work in the movie industry. He got a part in the 1997 movie Blackrock and afterwards he played a gay bicyclist on a TV show called Sweat. "It was shit, that show-so fucking bad,"he says."I wanted to quit acting after I did that.I just had no idea what I was doing."

He had the lead role on a Xena:Warrior Princess type Fox show called Roar, which was cancelled because of low ratings. However,it got him an agent in America. While he auditioned for roles in the U.S.,he scored a part in an Australian Indie called Two Hands, which he followed with Ten Things I Hate About You.After Ten Things, numerous teen-movie scripts were shot his way, and he refused to follow the advice of his agent and audition for them. His next role came a year later in The Patriot, a Revolutionary War drama with fellow aussie Mel Gibson.
